After ANOTHER day of telling myself I will follow weight watchers then eating a kitkat, footlong subway, 3 cookies AND a bag of crisps in the space of about an hour I am frustrated and fed up!!!!! Scales are going in the bin, diet apps are being deleted and from this moment I quit dieting!!!! I am 5 stone overweight and need to d something but dieting is driving me insane, I am not stupid and know chocolate isn't going to make me skinny. If anyone else is fed up with dieting and wants to join me then let me know... xx

But you are just kidding yourself 5 stone is a lot overweight, just get into the right mindset be sensible and you can have the treats still in moderation.

RefuseTheLies · 03/04/2018 20:35

I’ve just signed up for rebel fit on Facebook. I’m 7 stone overweight and diets are slowly killing me.

Ivebeenaroundtheblock · 03/04/2018 20:42

the nice thing about making healthy food choices is you get to start "fresh" several times a day.
okay so your evening choices sound a bit much but maybe not depending on what you had the rest of the day.
smaller portions, smaller plate, step away from the food and let your body/brain process that you've eaten and are full etc etc etc.
one step at a time.

Beachcountrysidetown · 04/04/2018 19:49

Try to focus on eating less - rather than “getting skinny”. You don’t need to pay anyone anything (like WW) you just need to do it, and you can.
As Ivebeenaround says - just write off any slip ups and get straight back on it. Not tomorrow, not Monday, but next meal.
Eat fresh, simple food that makes you happy - lots of fruit and veg with every meal. No complicated snacks just snack on fruit and veg.
Use My Fitness Pal as it gives you a real insight into how much you’re eating.
Find an exercise you love - it could be long walks 4x a week - running with couch to 5k - the Gym - workout dvds at Home but make sure you are doing something that makes your face red 3 / 4 times a week.
Being a healthy weight has become far too complicated and people just want to make money out of you - you can do this honestly

Op, did you get to be five stone over weight by dieting? Or was there another cause? Like not dieting?

Given free will and no diets, will you eat the same as what caused you to gain five stone?

You binge ate today. How long have you been on this diet for?

MessyBun247 · 04/04/2018 19:56

OP google ‘why diets don’t work’. They mess with your head and body.

For some,. The question is why is she five stone over weight in the first place.

acatcalledjohn · 04/04/2018 20:14

Eat the foods you like but less of them by logging them. MyFitnessPal is a dream for that. You don't deny yourself, you just re-train yourself to recognise normal portion sizes. Initially it's hard but it will get easier!

Bluntness100 · 04/04/2018 20:21

Isn't that dieting? Logging on my fitness pal is logging calories. So all you're doing is suggesting she goes on a calorie controlled diet.

acatcalledjohn · 04/04/2018 20:32

It's not a diet in the sense that WW is. Normal portion sizes aren't exactly a hardship, and refer to nutrition instead of a marketing plan. None of this WW/SW points and free foods nonsense, no cutting out of carbs/dairy/sugar etc. Just re-learning what a normal portion size is. That's how we should be eating in the first place.

It's either that or 5st overweight and at risk of heart disease, diabetes, joint problems, etc.

Calorie counting is a small price to pay for health.

In the last year I have lost 20lbs. Slowly, with a few minor set backs (holidays, Christmas, etc) and plateaus on the way. But I lost the weight without feeling like I've deprived myself. At no point have I starved myself. I'm just eating slightly less than I burn (100-200 calories a day, so less than a Kitkat).

To me that's not dieting, that's just moving away from being a glutton (which I absolutely was). And to add to that my cholesterol level and blood pressure have improved a great deal.

Peanutbuttercups21 · 04/04/2018 21:13

It sounds like you are playing mind games with yourself, if even the thought of a diet sets you off to overeat like that....must be tough!

From the all-or-nothing approach I gather you have dieted before? Famine or feast all the time?

Some good info around why diets don't work

Sport is great, not because it burns many calories (it does not really) but because it makes you feel good about yourself.

Stop the self hate, if you can!

Bluntness100 · 04/04/2018 22:09

Yes I understand what you're saying acat, but bottom line is it's more than normal portion sizes, it's eating the right foods too.

Ultimately to someone who over eats or eats the wrong stuff to a level they are five stone over weight, that will feel like a diet, to eat the correct portion sizes of the right food. Because that's really what these diet clubs are trying to teach people like the op to eat the right portion sizes of the right foods.

If she picks cheeseburger/ chips, lasagne for her lunch and dinner, a full fat yoghurt with fruit and syrup, for dessert, or chocolate cake and icecream for dessert, toast and peanut butter for her breakfast, tea with sugar in, she's going to gain weight, even if it's the correct portion size.

So she can't just eat the stuff she likes if it's the right portion size. Because the stuff she likes could be what's causing the problem. Look at today.

No rules, eating what you like is what makes many folks overweight in thr first place. Given the option many will eat the fatty sugary high calorie carby crap the op ate today.

Nousernameforme · 04/04/2018 22:14

The thing is regardless of which plan/diet/fad you follow, you won't lose unless you want to lose weight more than you want to overeat.

Until your head is in the right place you should just give up as all you are doing at moment is making yourself feel bad which can lead to more eating

Glug44 · 04/04/2018 22:15

Suggest you start slowly by giving up one unhealthy item you have everyday. Could be sugar in your tea or that midmorning muffin. Whatever it is stick to it and don’t replace it with anything else. Then start walking - minimum of 30mins a day fast or slow. When you have maintained both for a month then start dieting / exercising properly.

acatcalledjohn · 04/04/2018 22:30

it's eating the right foods too.

For health purposes yes, but for basic weight loss eating less than you burn is key. Food choices can be introduced gradually.

Calories in vs calories out is what matters. You can eat the calories in the form of a Maccie D's lunch and sugar in tea and a full fat yoghurt dessert. Eating clean is great, but if you still eat more calories than you burn you'd still get fat.

No need to make it any more difficult at this stage. Eat fewer calories than you burn.

Bluntness100 · 04/04/2018 22:53

I agree but your whole, day's calories and prob some of tomorrow's would be used with one big Mac and chips if trying to create a calorie deficit.

Agree with nousername, the bottom line is uou need to want to lose weight more than you want to eat crap and right now she's not in that's head, space. She wants to over eat more than she wants to lose weight. So she does.

userofthiswebsite · 04/04/2018 23:08

I share your pain. It's hard fighting against the desire to eat things for various reasons; I think people often under-estimate that...

What sometimes works for me is asking myself how I'll feel 2 minutes later after I've eaten the Mars bar or whatever it is. Will I feel any different after I've eaten it? Normally the answer is no.
Unless of course it's hunger related but you sound like me in that you just eat XYZ because you know it tastes nice and it's not eating too much at meal times that causes the problem it's everything else on top of that because they are just so enjoyable to eat.

It literally is a fight against yourself not to eat it.
