Youtube workout for the completely sedentary?

Can anyone recommend one? I have never been very fit due to disability but a couple of years ago, I got myself into a good space by walking lots. Two injuries later and I am in a bad space.

I am going back to healthy eating but want to exercise too due to the feelgood factor. I am still recovering from the second injury so not quite ready for the long, fast walks I was doing, but reckon I could try a short workout at home to get me started.

Any suggestions? Anyone care to join me?

Leslie Sansone walk at home videos on youtube are a good start to ease yourself back in. I did them while recovering from chronic illness and surgery last year.

Have you ever watched A Year to save your life US? There's a trainer called Chris Powell who gets some seriously overweight people active and he has a Youtube channel with some really good starting exercise plans. I've done loads of them and they really are gentle so should be fine for someone recovering from injury. I sprained my ankle last year and had to stop walking for 8 weeks and I was horrified how quickly my fitness levels went down. It was hard work getting back to where I was.

So whilst Jane Fonda could in no way be described as sedentary, she's done some exercise videos intended for a more mature audience, such as the . These are low impact and intended to be done at home, with tips on how to avoid over stretching. I tend to do .

Oh wow. Thanks so much everyone. Definitely going to look these up. Lizzie that is similar to whar happened to me and I was so demoralised after getting myself feeling fit. Just as I was getting back to it, I had an issue with my foot which required surgery so its been nearly two years and my fitness is worse than it has ever been, and I am heavier than ever. Sad

I also make sure now that I wear really good walking boots with ankle support - I was wearing fitflop toe posts when I sprained my ankle and learned the very hard way to look after my feet better Sad. Make sure you look after your foot well even if you're exercising indoors gently to start.

Hello Coper Pop yourself over here www.mumsnet.com/Talk/exercise/3189196-No-ripping-tearing-or-shreding-its-Jessica-Smith and have a look at a gentle way to get started.

forcookssake · 03/04/2018 14:08

I'll try these, my fitness has declined following health issues too, but you've inspired me to make a gentle, manageable start Smile Flowers

KikiMadeMeDoIt · 03/04/2018 14:23

I understand the health issue - I have Ehlers Danilo’s Syndrome and some days I can’t exercise in the way I’d like, but it really helps to have a library of more gentle videos where I can do something.

Fitness blender - can't recommend it highly enough. On YouTube and they have a website. Sensible and effective workouts of all types and levels, you can start slow and easy and work your way up.

tribpot · 03/04/2018 14:47

EllenRipley, how do you know where to start with FitnessBlender? I looked at their YouTube channel and searched on beginner but lots of stuff came back. Do you just pick something that looks good?

EllenRipley · 03/04/2018 17:24

Hmm, I'd probably start with a level 3/low impact cardio workout - some are as short as ten minutes. There are level 4 workouts that provide low impact options too. You could then do a short strength training one, where you can use light weights or just body weight. Longer vids will combine strength and cardio/HIIT (they're big on strength training for weight loss!) The website is really good as you can do a search for workouts that's tailored to your level/type of exercise/target area (e.g lower body, core, upper body, total body). All the vids are free which is great. They also do paid programs that target specific body areas or fitness levels and goals, when I've been feeling up to working out five days a week I've really noticed a difference in my body shape. They're pretty cheap.

I'd just find a few workouts that you like to begin with and familiarise yourself with their style. They give lots of good advice during the workouts and on the website. I try to do a variety through the week so maybe upper body/HIIT one day, then lower body the next etc. The total body ones are a good go-to for initial weight loss. You'll quickly figure out what you enjoy and what works for you, I was totally confused to begin with but I've been using the site for more than three years and it's been a bit of a lifesaver. Good luck! X

Well after following the link to the Jessica Smith thread, I have done a short beginners workout (one of those she does with her mum). I found it quite tough but I did it! My Fitbit recognised it as 11 minutes active so I have made a start! Onwards and upwards, and hopefully no more outwards!

Coper Well done! You’ve started Grin The Jessica Mum workouts are brilliant (her mum doesn’t like sweating), they’re a great way to get started. Be very proud of yourself.

CoperCabana · 03/04/2018 21:10

I am going to keep posting here as it is keeping me focussed! Today I did walking on the spot for 25 minutes in front of the telly after work as it was too wet to walk. Now cooking a low carb dinner so feeling pleased.

That's really good - my MIL was doing 3 miles a day inside her own house during all the bad weather! She's a mega-walker so was like a caged animal, I suspect.

CoperCabana · 04/04/2018 20:53

It made me chuckle as I was watching Masterchef whilst walking! But hey, better than watching Masterchef whilst sitting on my bum!
