Exercising at home

Not sure if this is the right place for the right traffic, but giving it a go.

I need to do more exercise, as part of my diet plan (which isn't going so well as I'm finding it hard to live without the sweet stuff). I hate the gym. I do try to walk every day. I sometimes cycle. Ideally I'd swim a couple of times a week. But basically I want to stay at home with the curtains drawn. Bit depressed as well, I think.

So, thinking of trying to get some exercise done at home where I can at least watch tv or listen to the radio at the same time.

Thinking either step machine or vertical climbing machine. We have VERY LITTLE SPACE in the house so can't invest in anything too big. Ideally it'd be something light so that it can live in the shed, and I can bring it into the house to use every day (yeah, right ....).

Could possibly manage a few stretching / floor exercises as well although I have to approach them with caution as even getting out of bed in the morning seems to result in pulled muscles.

I need low impact exercise as I have dodgy knee and ankles. Generally seizing up everywhere else as I'm unfit and unsupple. Nearly 50. Possibly peri-menopausal. About half a stone overweight and flabby.

Would love some thoughts / advice.

Try this
m.youtube.com/watch?v=KCe3ZS7pAC4

It’s called walk away the pounds, I’m really unfit but have started doing it and actually really enjoy it. I try to do it twice a day (2 miles) and adding other low impact exercises and it’s really helping.

The other DVDs I’m doing are the late 80’s early 90’s style DVDs,they might never old but they work and I can keep up with them. There’s no way I could manage to do the 30 day shred type ones!

Thanks Fezzes - that's exactly what I need. Will try it out this morning after the school run!

There's lots of yoga and Pilates stuff on YouTube. Yoga with Adrienne has a 30 day course which is quite good (you could stretch it over more than 30 days instead of working out every day).

I do a lot of fitness blender stuff - most of it is probably too high impact, but they have some Pilates workouts which might suit you. Some of them are only 10 minutes long but you can feel them working.

Have you thought about lifting weights? I have 5kg dumbbells which don't take up much space but are heavy enough to feel the burn.

Let me know if you like it, I’ve just started this week and it’ll be great to see what you do and motivation for me!

Fezzes:
Oooooh, it was good. I thought I might find her annoying but not so. And I can always turn the sound off. I found another one by her on You Tube as well, which I did, which was possibly slightly faster. And loads of others which I haven't looked at (which are perhaps beyond me as higher-impact). Nice to think walking a mile at home is a thing. Don't need anything more. I might try some small dumbells/ wrist / ankle weights when I'm a bit fitter. Also good to learn some moves for those millions of 5-minute stints that I spend waiting for my kids to go in / come out of the bathroom / get dressed etc etc. They might think Mummy has gone a bit strange but it's better doing a few exercises is better use of time than grumbling / checking my phone etc.

Hobbes: thanks for your suggestions. I'll have a look at those tomorrow. Funnily enough my GP recommended Yoga with Adrienne to ease the back muscle spams which I get from time to time. I obviously need a bit of stretching as well as toning up.

Feeling quite optimistic now!

Glad you liked it 😄

Yeah I like doing the little stints when I waiting for dinner to cook and nice to know little by little it’ll build up.

My kids running circles around me while I do it, both under 5. It adds a extra dimension to the exercise lol.

I was thinking about hand weights too as my youngest keeps stealing my current ones (tins of beans)

I’ve only done the first one I sent you so far and I do the 5min belly blaster whenever I’m waiting on things at home.

Hopefully I’ll try out some more soon.

Have a look at teambodyproject.com
There are loads of workouts and plans, from complete beginner to quite advanced.

Yes I did the belly buster one last night. Also excellent. Feeling motivated. Day 3 ....

You could try Beachbody.com - this is for at-home use, lots of different types of workout. You don’t have to be in peak condition and do the Insanity/P90X, you can find a lower impact workout.

Good luck
