Best way to go about cutting out sugar?

I keep fit, go to the gym most days, eat lots of fruit and veg but I eat way too much sugar. My weight loss has stopped (I don’t need to loose much more) and the only thing I can think of that’s effecting it is my love for sugar. I want to cut it right back but have heard so many stories about people feeling really unwell whilst going cold turkey. Am I best to gradually cut back? I have already stopped using sugar in my cereal/poridge and having a bit of banana in it instead but I love chocolate in the evenings (just a small amount. I probably eat way too much fruit as I thought this was ok but obviously ta also packed with sugar even if it natural. How do I cut back?

Is there any good porridge you can eat feel like crying now?

Lovemusic33 · 03/03/2018 17:57

Thank you, these posts are really interesting. When I eat poridge it tends to make me more hungry rather than filling me up. I will try eggs for breakfast and then maybe I won’t need to snack mid morning.

I will also look for the no added sugar chocolate.

Love, from what you describe I think you are not eating enough. Can you add some more fat, like avocados, butter, olive oil? Butter is very nice on porridge. An avocado is a great snack, very filling. Do you like olives? I love olives for a snack.

Try to stick to one or 2 squares of dark chocolate daily for a while, and stay off dried fruit. If you also up your fat intake, you should feel more satisfied.

Steel cut oats are less problematic, but still carbs.

Look up some articles about what happens to the body when you eat artificial sweeteners. (Clue: it’s why lots of Diet Coke drinkers are overweight)

Don't keep eating porridge and add butter to it, god you'll gain so much weight,

Yes carbs basically turn to sugar in your body so you get the spikes.

Go low carb, for me it kills all sugar cravings, there is a low carb sub forum if you're interested, when you add butter, it's to things like vegetables. Not to bloody carbs.

Lovemusic33 · 03/03/2018 18:18

I don’t like olives or avocado (there’s not many things I won’t eat but these too things are a hate).

I rarely touch butter.

I need more fibre in my diet if I am going to cut out cereal and poridge, I can eat loads of veg but it doesn’t help me poop 😂

Can I eat nuts as a snack?

Yes, nuts are fine but watch how many you have.

Psyllium husks and ground flaxseed are good for fibre without carbs.

Ilovemalteaserbunnies · 03/03/2018 18:28

If you read Michael Mosley's book 'The Blood Sugar Diet', it gives a really interesting insight into sugars / carbohydrates.

Bluntness100 · 03/03/2018 22:24

Nuts are fine, try almonds but be very careful on quanities, nuts are actually really high in calories and very fattening. They are also very moreish and easy to over eat. I stay away from them for that reason, I eat too many.

Blunt Lidl sell nuts in tiny little pots, I buy these because if I buy a bag of nuts I will eat them all.
