In the past, Budababe, I've found that having a day (or two) off helps to reboost the weight loss when you start again. (Obviously having 4 months off doesn't ahem)

OrmIrian · 03/05/2007 18:19

Get back on that wagon budababe . It is hard to start with - I spend the first week basically sulking because I didn't like the food I could eat and I wanted to eat cr*p like i had for the last few months. Pathetic really. But it's paid off because I simply don't want to eat anyhing now...which I think is a good thing
But this is why I love this diet - it's the only time I can control my appetite. I wish I could do low-calorie, balanced, normal food but I can't long term.

sallystrawb - I'm wondering if cutting off my arm helped at all....d'you think?

Hi there, hope you don't mind me joining you...

So, this is what I ate today..I'm really new to this so can someone judge it for me re-low carb, etc

breakfast: egg, sausage, mushrms, tomato, OJ
lunch: nothing..well a small slice of chocolate b'thday cake (gulp)
dinner: beetroot, spinach, feta cheese (small portion), pine nuts; small glass of wine

I have absolutely no idea total carb content, nor calories. Normal for me would be loadsa pasta / bread /potatoes /wine

Crotchety · 06/05/2007 21:44

Hello Hex - don't guess - get a book - Atkins or Clarke Plan say. Some of the low carb things you'd never guess unless you were told and ditto high carb- the OJ for example. Are you starting from scratch? Cos if you so you probably need to do some sort of proper induction period rather than just general cutting down to switch your system to fat burning. You are also supposed to eat every meal and not miss them out.
However do as I say not as I do - have been on induction all week and feeling very superior until today when I went out for lunch at someone's house and obviously it would have been rude not to have erm well everything. Very delicious it was too. Oh well. Here comes Monday.

hex · 07/05/2007 07:16

So won't it work then if I just try to cut down carbs instead of doing an induction thing? What does the induction do...can't the body just respond to lowered carbs intake? Is it sthng to do with shocking it into another process or something?

OrmIrian · 07/05/2007 10:51

hex - you need to take the carb intake right down to start with to kick-start ketosis. According to Atkins you need to be on or below 20g of carbohdrate a day - which is low! Chocolate cake, beetroot an fruit juice for example is not good - all very high in sugar. Once you eat something like that your blood sugar level will rise - stable low blood sugar level is the key to weight losss on this diet. It stops the process of ketosis and you have to start all over again. Sorry . If you want to lose weight this way you need to cut out all wheat based foods, all rice and root veg, all sugar incl fruit. You must eat fresh meat/fish and green veg and salad. Some dairy. Loads of water - at least 2.5 litres. This need only go on for 2 weeks to get the process started and then you can begin to add carbs back in again 5g a day at a time. A book would be helpful though - Atkins or Clarke possibly.

sally - diet mixers with spirits are the best, followed by dry white wine or champagne (tough one that ). However it's not the carbs per se that cause the problem as the alcohol itself which stops ketosis - but only temporary. Having said that I drank too much Old Speckled Hen at the weekend and some wine....not to mention pitta bread too.

anyone know how many carbs in mayonnaise?
i was under the impression that full fat mayo , like olive oil was a good dressing for salads etc. recently ive been making a meal oout of a can of tuna, two harboiled eggs, spring onions and mayo. delicious, but ive just seen a website that says mayo has a very high carb content.
anyoine know?

Crotchety · 07/05/2007 13:11

Well I knock mayo back like there's no tomorrow so I hope it's low!

cyclon - I am under the impression that is low. Virtually carb free for all realsitic purposes. 've got Asda mayo which says .1g per tablespoons and I think that Hellmans is lower than that. So unless you are intending to eat it by the jar I wouldn't worry.

cylonbabe · 07/05/2007 18:58

thank you.
must be careful no to look at dodgy american websites
