Can anyone recommend an exercise DVD?

I've just had a baby(a little over 2 weeks ago) and I now need to lose weight, about 2 1/2-3 stone really.

So I need to exercise as well as diet. The diet is started(only today but going well so far!!)

I am going to go to an exercise class once a week with a friend but cannot afford a trip anymore often.

So I want to buy an exercise DVD to do whilst dd is at preschool. But I haven't a clue which one, so any advice/tips/recommendations would be very helpful please.

I don't really want to do yoga/pilates, kinda thinking something nice and upbeat would be good. I haven't got loads of space either.

Thanks

Hi, Eddas. Congratulations on the birth of your baby!

Don't get too down on Yoga - it's by far (in my opinion) the most radical way not only to lose weight but to change your body shape. It's also ideal if you don't have much space.

Trust me, I'm 41 (nearly 42) and had a baby just a couple of years ago. Don't mind saying it, but I've got a good bod, and it doesn't cost me any money. Just buy a book or video on yoga and get stuck in.

The upbeat bit goes on in your head when you're doing it.

Honestly!!

since your little one is so small I would suggest that you stick to walking with the pram, everywhere and anywhere. This gets you out and about and also helps get the pounds down and increases fitness. Once you have your check up I would recommend the Davina McCall one.

hana · 30/04/2007 18:38

the davina ones are pretty good - I've just bought 2 from amazon (special offer, think it was the power of three, and mmmmcan't remember other one)
I've jsut started gettign into losing weight and my baby is 7 months, I think 2 weesk is a bit too eary! give yourself a bit of a break yet!!

Thanks for the replys, I'm not saying yoga/pilates isn't good but just not sure it's for me. Have been to yoga classes in the past and just prefer the aerobic ones. I have friends that go to yoga and also sing it's praises. I know it's fab for flexiblity for example, sure dh would appreciate that

Hayes, walking is on my list to do I have a 3 year old too so thinking that walks would be good to wear the talkative little monkey out too

Hana, I know it's early but really want to lose weight so that I can get out of my maternity clothes. I waited nearly 7 months to diet at all after having dd and wished i'd done it sooner. But i wasn't as heavy after having her! I ate a seriously unhealthy amount of chocolate whilst pg this time! I'm not going too mad with the diet, just cutting out crisps, chocolate and fizzy drinks(except diet coke with the odd vodka It has been nine months after all)

So Davina gets the thumbs up, Really glad no one suggested Jade as her voice would be a tad irritating

Eddas, the next best thing to Yoga is walking. Do it whenever and wherever you can, and the pounds will pile off.

Eddas · 30/04/2007 21:55

Thanks rabbleraiser, will be walking lots more now the stitches have healed Went for a walk round the local park (it's huge) when ds was 10 days old and it was quite uncomfortable but all ok now so have no excuses!!!

Don't know why I think I can make any suggestions given that I can't stick to an exercise plan or keep the weight off consistently. However, the best method I have found is the old exercise bike - in front of a good TV programme, or else while reading a book! If you can be disciplined about doing it every day, it works pretty well - it's the discipline bit that is the tricky bit, but I did manage to lose a shed load of weight and get fitter than for years that way. I got out of the habit again when I had to pack for 2 house moves in just a few months, as well as looking after the family, (5 of us). I am really trying to get it back into my schedule. Good luck!

Eddas · 01/05/2007 10:54

lillochum, that is a good idea, not sure i can afford a bike though at the moment. Like the idea of watching tv whilst getting fit though

Might go off and see how much they are on ebay

Thanks

Davina McCalls are very good. If you like to dance and want something with a good beat, I can highly recommend the Pump it Up DVD (the first one). It has the woman from the Eric Prydz video. It is excellent but as you have just had a baby, you should wait until you have your post-natal check up. It is an intense but brilliant workout.

DANCESwithaFewExtraPounds · 01/05/2007 16:51

Eddas - try freecycle for the exercise bike, I bet someone has one sitting in their garage they don't use!
I started a similar thread about an exercise dvd the other day and the davina got the thumbs up there too.
Good luck!

nailpolish · 01/05/2007 16:52

sthe Charlie brookes one is great

(her off eastenders ages ago)

better than the davina one IMO

Eddas · 01/05/2007 17:05

Thanks for the messages.

Do you think i really should wait til after my 6 week check up then? It's just that at my last one they didn't really do anything except ask how i felt(re PND) ask about contraception. Didn't even check my stitches which i thought they would.Anyway this time i feel so much better and back to normal now(maybe not quite, piles keep creeping back out!!) Delivery was normal no c-s or anything, so just thought i could get on with things asap. The only thing relly bothering me is my weight as i cannot fit into my normal clothes. Tried the other day and look like ten tonne tess not a good look!!!
