Does anyone use my fitness pal?

I started using this a few weeks ago and if I'm honest, I'm struggling a bit with It!

I'm sure there are ways to input stuff that I'm not aware of.

Ie: a certain amount of chicken. When I input it's only giving me a choice of (for example) 150g chicken breast, 220g chicken breast and I may have eaten 100g but need to click 150g as there's no 100g there.

What am I doing wrong? Can anyone help?

You can edit the serving size before you add.

dun1urkin · 29/01/2018 15:47

No of servings, not serving size, sorry

hi there! I use My Fitness Pal,

You're not doing anything wrong as such, you're just not used to the app. the volume/qeight said in the item is just the suggested portion for that entry. once you've selected it you can adjust the quantity.

If the entry for example says Chicken Breast 150g then once you've tapped on it you can adjust the portion size (usually it will let you pick between 150g or 1g) and then you can choose the quantity. So for a 100g chicken breast you just adjust the portion size to 1g and then make the quantity 100.

For most items the best way to add them is to use the barcode scanner as then you know you're getting all the correct details in the info, but I know that for fresh produce and poultry/meat that doesn't always work.

HTH :)

oh also, you can choose if the number of servings is done in fractions or decimal. so you could leave the portion size as 150g and choose 2/3 as the quantity.

I tend to use the later method if it's easy to work out or the former if I want an awkward number of grams in comparison to the listed portion sizes.

Sarahh2014 · 29/01/2018 15:50

I usually Google the calories for the weight of food then input it

Chapterandverse · 29/01/2018 16:08

Thanks so much!

soupforbrains (you definitely don't!) That's great! I must take a look at that later. I realised you could change the number but not the grams and it never would have occurred to me to have done that!

This is the first time I have used MFP so am still getting to grips with it.

We make a lot of home made foods - eg: today we have chicken broth. How would i record this? It's made using proper chicken stock, steeped peas/barley/soup mix then soup veg and chicken. I think dh put potato in it too.

Would I just search for home made broth and go by those cals?

I really need a crash course in it Grin

I do a lot of home cooking too, I try to cock from scratch all the time to eliminate unnecessary fats/sugars/salts etc.

If you have specific recipes that you make regularly then it's best to choose 'Recipes' from the banner across the top of the add screen. (once you tap breakfast/lunch/dinner) then choose Create a Recipe. Then you add all the ingredients you use as you would add foods, and tell it how many portions it makes. and it does the rest and saves the recipefor you, so you can easily add it again another time.

I've done this for risotto and pasta sauces I make often as well as casseroles, meatballs and baking recipes.

*COOK not cock.... obvs! Blush

crackerjacket · 29/01/2018 16:30

Laughing at soup's typo.

It is fiddly at first, specially if you cook from scratch lots but once you've input your recipes it's easy. Even more so if you are like me and eat the same stuff all the time.

CupcakeWithIcing · 29/01/2018 17:21

I found MFP to be really confusing and couldn't be arsed faffing with it. I now use my net diary and find it a lot easier.

soupforbrains · 29/01/2018 19:53

@crackerjacket if I was 'cock'ing from scratch all the time I don't think it would reduce the unnecessary salt!!!
