Do you eat or skip breakfast when dieting?

I find that if I have something to eat in the morning - even if it's something really small - then I'll be hungrier for the rest of the day and end up eating more. Yet eating breakfast is encouraged to boost metabolism.

What have you found works for you?

you need to find what works for you! Yes I agree to an extent as long as you're not becoming a candidate for the overworked NHS! I'm into being healthy!

Some people can go all day. I do find if I eat late at night I'm ALWAYS hungrier in the mornings which is odd because usually I don't eat after 7pmish until 9 to 10am which works well.

Our bodies get used to food quickly!

Cuddlesandcannulas · 12/01/2018 09:53

I eat breakfast. I'm astonished that so many people don't.

If I skip breakfast, by lunch I'm ravenous and I make bad food choices and eat too much. Eating breakfast means a smaller daily intake of food for me, so it works for me.

BitOutOfPractice · 12/01/2018 09:56

I never ate breakfast until I started dieting last year. Now I always do.

BUT

It has to be protein based. Usually eggs. I've just had bacon, egg and mushrooms. That will keep me going till 2pm, possibly even skipping lunch. If I just had toast or cereal I'd be STARVING by 11am

ppeatfruit · 12/01/2018 10:18

Is it working for weight loss BOOP?

BitOutOfPractice · 12/01/2018 10:22

Well I've lost 4 stone in total so yes. 10lbs to go

ppeatfruit · 12/01/2018 10:38

Wow, congratulations! Flowers I'm with you about carbs too. I eat rye bread though.

Purplerain101 · 12/01/2018 10:48

Carbs can be good if having things like sweet potato, quinoa, lentils, veg etc. Not if having things like giant bowls of white pasta every day. I think dieting is different for each individual as we all have different metabolisms and energy requirements

Oly5 · 12/01/2018 10:51

Yes I’m doing slimming world. Have a big breakfast and am losing weight

ppeatfruit · 12/01/2018 10:58

Yes Purple True, I think that the very old-fashioned Hay diet is brilliant, it's just is eating carbs and protein at different meals. For IBS too, it cured mine.

So not the traditional ham sandwich or burger. But quinoa or whole rice with veg. is fine. As is egg or tuna salad.

HLBug · 12/01/2018 11:30

I rarely eat breakfast anymore. I'm hardly ever hungry in the morning and can happily get by on tea/coffee. I like to enjoy what I eat and throwing down toast whilst trying to feed the baby and find the toddlers shoes is not enjoyable. I'd rather to wait until I have time to enjoy every mouthful.

Also, wrt a pp said about not being afraid to be hungry - this has been so important for me. Hungry is nothing to be scared of Smile

BitOutOfPractice · 12/01/2018 12:53

I've lost weight with calorie counting. And I've found potates, rice, pasta and bread to be so expensive, calorie-wise, that I've naturally cut down on them. Especially as they don't keep me full for very long.

Veg, pulses, lean protein have taken their place.

Yesterday I had a slice of toast (and an egg) for breakfast, no starchy carbs with lunch or dinner. (Salad at lunch, butternut noodles for dinner while the kids had rice).

SarahBeeney · 12/01/2018 12:56

I'm doing Intermittent Fasting so I skip breakfast every day. I'm used to it now so don't feel hungry. I used to have porridge at half 7 and be starving my 11.

INeedToEat · 12/01/2018 13:13

I eat a 'breakfast' of two boiled eggs at some point between 8am -12pm depending on if im hungry.

I'm no longer 'dieting' (having gone from a size 18 to a 10 last year) but found eggs for breakfast did stop me snacking.

ppeatfruit · 12/01/2018 20:02

Well done Ineedtoeat That is a great loss!

somebodythinkofthechildren · 12/01/2018 21:53

Very interesting thread. I've lost three stone and still can't figure out what my body 'needs' for breakfast Blush I normally have two boiled eggs.

ppeatfruit · 13/01/2018 11:06

I also lost the 3 stone that I needed to, still eating fruit somebody ; I wait till I feel properly hungry and then have a homemade smoothie with fresh seasonal fruit ,sometimes with a few dried apricots or prunes, ground almonds and linseeds and a whole lemon, plus half organic fruit juice half filtered water I use a hand held blender it's lovely!

ppeatfruit · 13/01/2018 11:06

For breakfast of course Grin

cakedup · 14/01/2018 10:24

ppeatfruit doesn't Paul McKenna also say that fasting/skipping meals makes you fat? Which is bullshit. All that nonsense about fat storing up in panic response. I agree about crash diets - I don't follow any fad diets and I wouldn't regard the authors of those diets necessarily experts either. However I am always interested to hear what nutritional experts have to say - people who are actually qualified and studied their field. Paul McKenna is not qualified to speak about diet. He has just developed his own theory. Some of it may be true. I do agree with 'eat when your hungry' to a degree - however this isn't very practical to me in my everyday living.

A key to (for me) losing weight is to not be frightened of being 'hungry' - in fact I am rarely hungry... Ragwort this is a sticking point for me...I hate feeling hungry and I seem to get that feeling quite easily/quickly even though I do eat a lot!

ASauvignonADay · 14/01/2018 10:31

I only have breakfast at the weekends. I don't have time before work but also find it makes me hungry all morning! I have a snack at about 11. I've definitely lost weight doing this over the last year.

ppeatfruit · 14/01/2018 10:51

If your 'nutritional experts' studies weren't sometimes paid for by the huge dairy\sugar drinks manufacturers I might agree with you Cake .

I don't follow PM blindly but knowing my body, feeling when I'm full chewing slowly and properly enjoying the food (not overeating) really works well for me. also the others who were on our P.M. support thread a few years ago.

I don't starve after 7pm I'll have herbal teas and maybe a decaff coffee and I don't feel hungry anyway.

Chocolate1984 · 14/01/2018 16:26

I eat breakfast but I eat it around 10 when I'm back the school run. I have 5 chicken sausages, egg, flatbread & coffee. It's just under 400 calories & fills me up. I'll have something lighter later & then dinner.

KevinTheYuccaPlant · 14/01/2018 19:17

I spent about three years not eating breakfast, but found that I overcompensated the rest of the day. The one thing I've found I can eat for breakfast that doesn't leave me starving by 10am is 2 scrambled eggs with wilted spinach on a slice of seeded wholemeal toast. 350 calories, because I cook the spinach in a little bit of butter, and keeps me going without feeling the slightest bit hungry from 7am until 1pm.

Ellieboolou27 · 14/01/2018 20:42

I eat it when I'm at work which is 3 days a week, the other days I have something around 11-12pm, usually eggs on toast or salad with pitta and some protein.

Evening meal around 5-6pm with family, then a snack at 8pm for around 200 cals usually crackers with a little cheese and olives.

10lb lost so far
