I thought I was doing really well today, I've had 1 weetabik with milk for breakfast, a tin of sardines and salad for lunch and a 2 egg ommelette with salad for tea...I've just counted my calories and I've only had about 600 calories today for the whole day, great? well I've just been told that I'm going too far and my body won't lose weight as it will go into starvation mode and start to store fat??? is this true??

Yes, thats true. I've never met a single person, in the whole of my life, who has kept weight off after losing at a rate of more than 2 - 3lb per MONTH. Your body starts to conserve energy and keeps a hold of every single calorie you consume. You are under-nourishing yourself and if you keep it up you may well develop an eating disorder.

Sorry to be blunt, but I know a lot on this particular topic.

Double your calorie intake (from the 600 or so you mention) and do some exercise you find enjoyable. And aim for a slower weight loss. That's my best and most heartfelt advice.

belgo · 24/04/2007 19:47

Even if you initially loss a lot of weight, that sort of dieting will only help you become fatter in the long run.

WigWamBam · 24/04/2007 19:54

Yes, it's true. Your body will think it's being starved and will hang on desperately to every calorie.

You'll knacker your metabolism, and make losing weight even harder in the long run.

You can't really believe that eating so little is good for you?

belgo · 24/04/2007 19:55

you'll start to digest your own muscle, instead of fat; And put strain on your heart, maybe leading to future heart problems.

the other posts are right.
sensible slow weight loss is the only way - boring but true!!!!

lifesteeth · 24/04/2007 20:36

thanks for the advice, I really want quick results and on that "race to size 00" program they hardly ate anything at all and lost so much weight...bad example I know but it worked for them...? I wouldnt go that far btw, I only want to be a size 12, I wouldnt go lower than that as I'd look too skinny for my height.

It's too little.

pesme · 24/04/2007 20:38

jesus that program. i didn't watch it but it must has spurred on a thousand eating disorders.

WigWamBam · 24/04/2007 20:41

Those programmes were supposedly intended to put people off stupid faddy diets by showing you how awful they were and how harmful they can be, not get you thinking that it would be a good way to lose weight!

Quick results generally mean that the weight goes right back on again, and brings reinforcements with it.

A healthy amount of weight to lose is approx 2 lb a week. Anything over that is unhealthy.

I am currently dieting and my daily calory intake is approx 1100 calories a day, but if you exercise you can use more than that as your exercise calories are taken into account. On occasion it has happened that I?ve eaten less than my required calory quota, not deliberately, more because of what I?ve eaten iyswim, and I find that the next day it?s much harder to exercise and that I generally feel more tired.

There?s nothing wrong with the food you?ve eaten today, but you should try and eat at least one main meal iyswim, eg today I had branflakes for breakfast, ham and salad for lunch, and peppered mackerel and salad for tea with some bread and butter as well. I also had a cup of tea with milk/sugar in it. I?m quite far under my daily calory quota, so I can either have a snack/cup of tea before bed, or I can eat slightly more tomorrow.

If you occasionally undereat it?s not a big issue, you can make up for it (that?s how slimming world works after all), but just don?t make a habbit of it.

MerlinsBeard · 24/04/2007 22:07

is that an everyday thing? if its a one off i wouldn't worry about it. Most days i try to have as few cals as poss but my really good days (eg Sunday - about 400 cals) are usually followed with what i call donut days!!

What you have listed doesn't sound all that bad tbh. sounds quite healthy. its hardly as if you starved yourself

lifesteeth · 24/04/2007 22:12

I've just had a scotch egg...probably the worst time to eat it so close to bed time but I was hungry and was erm...worried it would go out of date

So say 600 calories now lol

saggers · 24/04/2007 22:12

I don't think it's a good idea to consume so few calories in one day, but the key should be your hunger. If you're genuinely satisfied by what you've eaten today, then you won't come to any harm. But if you've felt hungry at all, then it's not enough.

suejonez · 24/04/2007 22:18

lifesteeth - craving a scotch egg at the end of the day because you're starving is EXACTLY why these diets don't work.

On the otherhand you have taken PaphneHarvey's advice and doubled your calorie intake for today to about 1200 which is a lot more sensible.

My doctor recommends 2lb PER MONTH just like DH says, says there is no point losing it ay faster - it rarely stays off.

Why do we always expect instant results for everything? A far bigger thread than this rquired to answer that question I guess.

MerlinsBeard · 24/04/2007 22:20

if you are guessing your cals then u have prob had more than u think anyway. I you are so hungry that u need to eat something else then you are eating too few calories
