Due to lots of reason I won’t bore you with, I’m very overweight. I have decided to do something about but I’m scared I have left it too late. I have at least 4 stones to lose and I’m 40. Any experience to share ?

Smiled I’d loved to be your buddy, I also want to do the couch to 5k challenge and I’m also joining a cheap gym.

Yes. I have lost nearly 4 stone this year and I am 42. Broadly followed slimming world and increased exercise.

KikiMadeMeDoIt · 27/12/2017 09:35

Yes, absolutely it’s possible. You will have to change your diet and exercise, but it’s possible (that’s only two things to change, that has to be good news 😀).

What are you doing now that you think is adding weight? It’s not possible to suggest what you can do until we know what you do now.

Frouby · 27/12/2017 09:37

I hope it's possible! I want to shift 2 stone this year.

It is apparently slightly more difficult. But I always think it's balanced out by probably no more pregnancies. It took me 2 years to lose the weight I gained when pg with ds 4 years ago. And not everyone is the same menopause wise.

I was 40 in October. Have put a bit of weight on but that was self inflicted.

The 2nd of January I am dieting. I get married in may so have a decent incentive anyway.

autumngold6 · 27/12/2017 09:39

Yes. I've recently lost over 4 stone and I'm in my late fifties. I also did it through Slimming World and increasing exercise.

Fadingmemory · 27/12/2017 09:41

I lost 3.5 st in six months at the age of 55. Stopped eating anything with more than 5% fat and used sweetener in tea. Gave up cake and biscuits and upped consumption of vegetables.

HolgerDanske · 27/12/2017 09:41

Yes. I did it with low carbing. So simple and effective and most of all a very healthy way to eat.

There’s an MN lowcarb bootcamp starting in January.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 27/12/2017 09:43

I’m 43 and lost two stone since May, with another two to go. It is slow but I think that’s largely due to my choice of diet - I’ve opted for slow and steady so I have a better chance of keeping it off.

PostNotInHaste · 27/12/2017 10:01

Yes it's fine. I'm 48 and lost over 6 stone since November 2016. It needs to be a sensible lifestyle change though that you can maintain long term though going forward as maintenance is the challenge for most of us.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 27/12/2017 10:56

Wow! How did you loose it postnot?

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 27/12/2017 11:02

Will be jumping on the low carbing train myself. Went and knackered my knee a few weeks ago (slipped over in Aldi!) so exercise is somewhat limited, although am aiming to get in the pool as soon as I’ve been given the OK to drive.

So will there be a new thread starting in January?

My grandmother decided to lose weight when in her 70's after a very overweight friend died from complications of type 2 diabetes.
She lost 3 stone over a year by reducing portions, she was already on a healthy diet so just ate less.
She's 91 now and a healthy wt for her height, eats 3 small meals a day and grows her own salad leaves in a box on the patio Smile.

abitoflight · 27/12/2017 11:20

Yes completely possible
I lost 2 stone with stress of a house move - purely accidental and would have gained 2 stone if I was a comfort eater
I think that the main thing is to realise how much body requirement for calories drops with age
1200 calories a day is my resting calorie requirement and WW and SW account for this too

PostNotInHaste · 27/12/2017 11:26

Got a Fitbit and used Nutracheck to count calories, making sure that I had a weekly deficit. To start with I walked, gradually building up. After a few months I started Couch 2 5k but walking is great.

Still have 1.5 stone left but am confident I'll get there this year. I had surgery end of May to aim for which focused me. Since them I've carried on but with any urgency gone I build in regular breaks to make it less of a slog and to practice maintaining for when I get there.

Things I have learned so far is some days you'll eat more than you burn. That's fine, there's always another day and you can sort it then - just keep on keeping on. Weight loss is not linear and protein does help fill you up.

mayathebee · 27/12/2017 12:50

Could you use another weight loss buddy? I turn am about to turn 39 and would love to be a bit fitter and healthier before I turn 40 in Jan 2019. I am starting the C25k and going to follow Slimming World - I don't have time for classes but I have the books so I'm going to follow it at home. To be honest I'm a bit worried about how saggy everything will be (my skin wasn't very elastic even when I was young) but I'm focusing on the health aspects and keeping up with my energetic DDs.

Northernmum100 · 27/12/2017 13:01

It can be done but takes commitment and I have looked at it as a change of lifestyle rather than 'a diet'. Followed slimming world, walking and occasional run/shuffle and am 3 1/2 stone lighter in 12 months, not been hungry or felt deprived and wish I had done it sooner.

MuseumOfCurry · 27/12/2017 13:05

45 here and I lost about a stone this year.

I started Pilates and running in early 2017, and while this largely eliminated my muffin top I didn't really start losing weight properly until I cut my calories pretty seriously (I think I eat around 1200/day on average) and crucially, doing HIIT (high intensity interval training).

I'm so much happier now, and I have a great time shopping for clothes.

fluffiphlox · 27/12/2017 13:07

Yes I will be 60 next month and have lost about 3 stone over the last couple of years. It is hard work but I have done it through 5:3 and LOTS of weights and cardio.

user1471426611 · 27/12/2017 15:59

I'm 45 and since November 2016 I've lost 5 stone. It's taken a lot of effort and time at the gym - both cardio and weights but im so much healthier and happier. I walk far more than I've ever done and I eat better. I started at 1200 calories a day but am now on 1650 and still losing a pound a week. I've got 3 pounds to go now.

Good luck!

Peaceandl0ve · 27/12/2017 16:09

Another one here to echo those who say ditch the diet! Go for lifstlye change, I am 49 and have lost 4.5 stone since May.
I have redueced carbs, cut out all breads and pastries and made sure my calories stayed within weightloss limits.
The battle is one and lost i. Your head, i made myself three simple rule that I have stuck to, every day, no excuses:

No snacking
No eating standing up (I had issues with standing in the kitchen eating anything and everything in between meals)
When the last meal of the day is done there is no more food for the day.

For me, the rules were simple, sticking to them took real effort.
To keep me on track I weighed every day and looked at the big picture so i knew it would take six months but as I wrote down my daily weight, or got a printout from a weighing machine in Boots, I could see the trend going in the right direction.

stevie69 · 27/12/2017 17:00

Yep, I lost 6 stones (very slowly) between the ages of 43 and 50. Went from just under 15 stones to 8st 12lb.

It was no harder than when I was younger. Don't let age be a barrier. If you want to do it, go for it.

Good luck Smile

babyboomersrock · 27/12/2017 18:19

I was 70 this year. In my younger days, I weighed around 8 stone (I'm short) and never had to think about what I ate. I had 4 children and was very active.

As I got older, especially post-menopause, I got less active and ate more cake/biscuits/chocolate.

Just before my 70th birthday, I finally checked the scales, to find I was more than 2.5 stones over "normal" weight - a real wake-up call; I was slowing down, finding it harder to walk any distance, and was aware that I would do anything to avoid bending down Wink.

I asked for a Fitbit for my birthday and started to do 10k steps a day. Initially, I cut out all chocolate, all cake, biscuits and most bread, though I now eat them very occasionally - the craving for chocolate has all but gone and I find sugary foods sickly now. I've always eaten well so I just watch my portions and refuse the puddings. I eat protein-rich meals and don't snack in between.

Within 6 months I had lost 2.5 stones and I feel so much better. My aches and pains have largely gone, I can walk for miles, and I have far more energy.

I strongly recommend not thinking of this as "going on a diet". Just get yourself healthy - eat less, eat the right stuff, cut out the rubbish. A bit of exercise will help, and it will also distract you from constant eating, but the main thing is to reduce your food and don't eat sugar.

Good luck!
