Demented · 23/07/2004 18:11

There was a slimming club called Mumsnet Mamas
Whose members wanted to look fab in pyjamas
The weeks went on
Some have gone
But we're all still trying and that's what matters!

Hi all sensible eaters!

Thought I shld introduce myself properly as I didn't make a very good job of it last wk.

I've got a dh, 4 dd's and 3 gerbils. The stress of this has caused me to gain 2st and I am desperate to not look like I have 4 children.

As I told Demented, my bookcase is straining under the weight of every diet book under the sun. I've decided to opt for Atkins as I previously lost 1.5st before I finally cldnt stand the sight of another bacon rasher. If anyone else is following it could you give me some pointers on how to keep on it and how to survive the initial horror of induction????

By the way, if you wanted to know, is my T.O.M. this wk which gives me an excuse for not losing!

By the way, Artyalex where is your message???

Phew, back on track after a very bad result last week - have managed to lose the rest of what I gained in our weekend away, plus one extra pound. Am trying desperately to think of it in terms of 4 week cycles - so 10lbs in the last weeks is still pretty good, but do I wish it would happen a bit more consistently: 0,-9,+3.5,-4.5 isn't so much a steady loss as a roller coaster.

Welcome, and good luck, to fabarooney, alison222 and rooster. Here's hoping that these threads can help keep you motivated to lose. I certainly find that knowing I'll have to admit it here if I gain (or even don't lose) any helps me to resist the temptation to have things I know I shouldn't.

My tip of the week: strawberries. Fab, right in season and pretty cheap now. And hardly any calories! I've been known to eat a whole punnet of them (oops) - but then I realise that I needn't feel guilty because a whole pound of strawberries contains less calories than just one bag of crisps. And is much nicer, takes longer to eat, is better for you, and fills you up more.

Interesting point MumInAMillion - perhaps we should have a quick poll of who's doing what diet. Can't help with the Atkins I'm afraid as I've never tried it.

I'm sort of making up my own - picking the bits I like from several! It's probably fairly close to South Beach, as it's low-ish carb (am also trying to do wheat-free), and low-GI, but with a lot more fruit than Atkins would allow I think, and less meat, but more fish/shellfish. But I'm taking some of the concepts from others too - like having some days (weekends) where I allow more (plan it, not just get tempted into snacks and treats) and consider totals over a week, rather than limiting mself to the same amount per day.

Muminamillion, you don't look like you've got 4 children as it is (far too relaxed and smilie )! I don't know much about the Atkins diet, I'm doing a bit of Weight Watchers, combined with a bit of my own thing (some days I can't be gassed counting points) together with as much exercise as I can fit in. If you do a search in Mumsnet for Atkins I'm sure you will find one or two threads.

Another thought if you can't find any threads start a new one of your own, I'm sure all the Atkins followers will come out the woodwork!

OK have just been studying a spreadsheet for WW and am going to have a job to work out anything. DH is vegetarian and we cook ourselves mostly. Hmmm
Also it appears that a cup of coffee is 4.5 points. is this really right anyone?

MUMINAMILLION · 30/07/2004 15:56

Thanks Lunarsea and Demented. Been looking at the red Slimming World diet (told you I had them all!!!) as someone today told me it is low carb but you can eat fruit and veg. Seems a bit easier (except I can't have mayo - nothing is ever perfect!) so think I might try it. How fickle am I - 2 different diets in the space of a few hours! All the best for everyone for the week.

All the best with the Slimming World then Muminamillion, there are a few Slimming World devotees on Mumsnet so I'm sure there will be lots of extra help should you need it.

I have ordered Dr Gillian McKeith (is that her name) you are what you eat book so I will be interested to have a look at that when it arrives and may give it a go.
