Weight watchers or slimming world?

Hi, I've decided I'm going to join either ww or sw after Christmas. Doesn't seem much point now as festive excesses fast approaching. I've looked at both plans and really don't know which would suit me better. I'm not a huge fish eater, mainly tuna, love chicken, and cook a lot with beef mince (chilli, Bolognese) and i use a fair bit of pasta. I like my fruit and veggies, eggs, cheese and yoghurts. When it comes to carbs, I can't eat whole wheat (Brown rice/bread/pasta) I can't digest it and get awful stomach cramps, followed up by bloating. I don't eat much chocolate, prefer crisps and do like my tea and coffee.

So any thoughts on what might be better? I'm currently leaning towards ww, but just wondered if anybody has done both and what they thought? TIA.

Start "now" rather than "low"!

I don't really like either of them. But probably WW is the most sensible of the two. Slimming World eating gigantic portions of things you don't even want to eat anyway seems a bit pointless. And not keen on the syns or the silly meetings. After doing SW couldn't eat another Mullerlight again. I think there's room for a different approach.

It's really not

I cant see how you can lose weight eating pasta , rice, etc.

Why not? A gram of carbohydrate has far fewer calories than a gram of fat. There's nothing wrong with carbohydrates in moderation, especially if they are complex.

WW has silly meetings too, viviennemary

They all seemed to be geared towards how you could still eat chocolate cake/ice cream and lose weight rather than how to make a permanent change in your thoughts surrounding eating.

I never went to a SW meeting as I used their online system.

WW also has a variation of their plan (healthy and filling or something?) which is almost identical to the SW plan

I was just giving my opinion. I know SW works for a lot of people but I don't think the track record of actually keeping weight off is that good. And I didn't much like the hard sell of stuff in the meetings at all. And the raffles. It's a bit of a 'racket' IMHO.

Totally agree with you there viviennemary, they’re both geared towards peddling their branded wares.

Plus SW must have some affiliation with Mullerlight (bleurgh)

I don't get the obsession with muller lights. You don't have to eat them!

I was on a few SW Facebook groups and all people seemed to talk about were the various flavours of Mullerlights Grin

I suppose like anything you take from it what you want. But that suggestion that you have to eat certain things is the very opposite of how SW actually works.

You don't have to eat mullerlights. I don't like them, so I eat plain greek yoghurt. I think as with any diet, if you are looking at the rules and wondering how you can eat as much as you possibly can without circumventing them, then you really aren't in the correct mindset to lose weight so you wont. I don't know anyone who can eat massive bowlfuls of plain pasta or tons of mullerlights. It is about portion control as you are meant to fill your plate with vegetables and snack on fruit. I found it hard to eat as many vegetables as you are supposed to on it. I do agree I think sticking with 'syns' was probably a mistake when they revamped it because whatever they are meant to mean, its a stupid word for things that might just be a bit of olive oil in your cooking or a blob of tomato sauce. I don't know about WW as this is the only slimming club Ive ever done.

I think that idea of “circumvention” is what I grew to dislike about WW, particularly the meetings.

From my experience of the Facebook SW groups, a lot of people there were trying to find a way of using the plan so that they could still eat sugary/artificially sweetened foods (cue Mullerlights and Fivre One bars) and drink alcohol but still lose weight.

The actual SW plan and their own materials were more focused making permanent healthy eating choices.

Fibre not fivre

I don't like mullerlights, find them far to sickly, so I'll be okay with that one Grin

I have mullerlights in the fridge because my DH (who isn't doing SW but still manages to scoff more hi fi bars and muller lights than me) likes them. This thread has made me want one even though I don't normally eat them!!!

Completely agree. Fairly sure they were at least honest about the meaning previously and spelled it 'sins'. Between that and the term 'body magic' it's called exercise FFS sometimes I do cringe a bit talking about the plan. Wankiest words ever.

That said, there are probably comments from me on some of these boards in the past criticising SW. On that front I'm a bit of a convert. It turns out I am able to eat carbs in sensible portions and I can be trusted to pick sensibly when I'm hungry between meals. I believe fats are an important part of my diet and lose better when I use my wanky 'syns' to incorporate them into my meals rather than for snacking on sugar. I hardly use any sweetened products. I've found it to be more about good home made food. It's not a plan for those after convenience if you want to stay away from junky sweetened foods full of unrecognizable ingredients though.

Picked up the SW magazine today. No voucher for joining though. Haven't read it properly yet, but some lovely looking recipes. One was for sausages with root veg, syn free if you use the slimming world sausages. Any one tried them? Are they tasty or vile?

Quite looking forward to trying out some of the recipes. I can see my self batch cooking at weekends and freezing up in portion sizes for during the week.

I don't like the sausages plain, but they are passable in a casserole. I don't know of any other good sausages.

I was looking last night and low fat sausages are quite low syns. I usually only have them in a casserole anyway!
