Weigh watcher Vs Slimming world

angelpoppet · 19/07/2004 12:17

I've done ww before and lost 1 1/2 stone. However the lady I used to go with is now pregnant and my sister wants me to join slimming world with her.

I've had a look at their website and it looks quite complicated. Has anyone tried both??? Which is best???

I have to say I found ww did work for me and I'm quite reluctant to switch. But if I go to ww it will be on my own where as there will be a big group of support at slimming world?!?!?!?!!?!?

Any comments would be helpful, thank you in advance

i had a freind do the slimming world and another do weight watchers and from what they told me i would personaly go with ww because what i noticed with sw you are very restricted where as ww is points so its up to you how you use them i wouldnt realy worry to much about the big support group as you wil find you will make friends there and theres also mumsnett and us alone is a big support group for you

Again tried both. I prefer SW, I really couldn't get on with WW and busy cunting points and had to take pocket calculator to the supermarket and spent 2 hours longer. I found SW I was never hungry and it was really quite easily to stick to. I saved up my sin points and had a takeaway at the weekend and still lost every week (that I stuck to it). I lost a stone on both diets, but SW was much less painful as on WW I seemed to be hungry all the time.
Good luck with whichever you choose.
Always found I do better when I went with someone as when you are about to cheat it make me think about how I wold feel if I didn't lose weight and they did.

mummytosteven · 20/07/2004 08:43

I've done ww and the points which was OK, but felt they were dissuading you from eating fruit by putting points on fruit - I know fruit has calories in, but surely other than avocado, you should be eating loads anyway! I've had a couple of friends achieve fabulous results with SW, and as a carbs girl am tempted to give Slimming World a go.

woodpops · 20/07/2004 08:46

Like most I've done both slimming world and WW. I find slimming world much easier. Not so much tallying up of points. I also find the weight losses with sw alot better. I lost 10½lb in 3 weeks with sw. WW did work for me in the past I lost 2½ stone with them but now I got 2 small children I don't have time to faff about worrying about the points value of everything. With sw I know I can either eat unlimited potatoes, pasta, beans etc or unlimited meat, fish. Goodluck in whichever diet you decide on!!!!

Doh ........... the dieting must be getting to me sorry for posting the same thing twice!!!!!!

batey · 20/07/2004 09:02

I'd not done ant diet before this March and did SW as friends had done well on it. I find it v. easy and was never hungry. It's not complicated once you get used to it. I lost a sone gradually over 3months and have found it easier than I imagined to maintain the weight. HTH.

bumpsy · 20/07/2004 10:04

I was sworn to the allegence of SW because I had always done so well on it but after my last baby I rejoined SW and the weight would not shift at all,I don't know if I had become complacent re the diet or not or if my body had got used to it so I decided to join WW and I have to say I do find it much better as You can really eat whatever YOU like and incorporate alchohol into it a lot easier(which is always a bonus!).
I have lost 171bs so far and am just 4 pounds off target and it has taken only a couple of months.
I have just found out I am pregnant again though so I will be piling it all back on and some more!.

angelpoppet · 20/07/2004 10:14

congrayulations Bumpsey - My dh and I are ttc at the moment so going back to WW now probably isn't the best idea.

I choose ww in the end and went to my 1st meeting last night. I have still kept a whole stone off from the last time I was a member so I was really pleased with that. It felt like I have a positive start to my diet rather than a depressing "I can't eat what I want" sort of feeling!! I'm actually happy to be on a diet (Wierd!!!)

windypops, I know that counting points is annoying but did you have to be so rude?

woodpops · 20/07/2004 11:57

I should also add that I fell pregnant with both of my children within the 1st week of joining a new WW club. THat may be a reason I'm a bit against WW as well as I really don't want anymore children!!!!!!

Delgirl · 20/07/2004 14:14

I've been to both WW & SW. I did lose weight on WW but I find that SW suits me better. Everyone is different and you generally know which you suit best usually. You could give SW a try for a couple of weeks. If you don't want to join then the SW thread gives more info as well as the website. If it doesn't suit you then you could go back to WW. The other thing you could do if you want the support is to carry on doing WW but got to the SW class. hth

Delgirl · 20/07/2004 14:18

Can I add that AFAIK SW is the only diet that midwives recommend you can do whilst pregnant as it really is healthy eating.

windypops · 20/07/2004 15:41

willow2 and what a way to do a typo.

Skara · 20/07/2004 15:54

LOL windypops, that's how I feel about the bloody ww points as well

pollyanna · 20/07/2004 16:03

I've done both and prefer slimming world too. I didn't know you could do it while pregnant - I must give it a go!! I think sw is probably more restrictive - but this is better for me, I'm no good at limiting myself when I can have treats. Also, I found the points counting a real pain too.

bran · 20/07/2004 17:54

Has anybody tried the on-line version of Slimming World? It's called Body Optimise.

From the sound of it SW would suit me better than WW, but I don't have a class near me, although there is a WW near me. Years and years ago I went to WW and did ok, but then I moved and changed meeting location and the new leader was very school teacher-ish, which just brought out the worst in me. I tend to be a bit rebellious around authority figures.

Pixiepod · 20/07/2004 22:26

SW worked much better for me as a long-term option, not just losing the weight but keeping it off too, it is definately more of a healthy eating plan than a diet. I did it 2 years ago (lost 20lb and have kept it off). For me it was better than WW as it gets you eating tons of the good stuff with treats as an extra and your tastes slowly change over time.

It is true that you really don't feel hungry as there is always loads of "free" foods to eat - on a green day you could literally have 10 baked spuds (not that you'd want to!! ) and it is still not counted in the diet. It also borrows slyly but effectively from the Atkins diet, recognising your body doesn't easily digest carbs & protein together - hence 'red' and 'green' days. Not many I know, who have done WW, have lost the weight long term i.e. keeping it off longer than 1 year after reaching goal weight) whereas SW'ers seem to have(including my sis, a total anti-dieter, who scoffed sarcastically at ANY diet ever working but grudgingly admitted SW works pretty good).

sanssouci · 20/07/2004 22:36

bumpsy, don't you DARE pile that weight back on again!

allthegirls · 21/07/2004 22:19

I have done both diets. I lost nearly a stone with ww in 4 weeks but gave up after this time as I felt restricted to what I could eat. SLimming world the weight came off slower but did come off and I always felt full up. It is a bit more difficult to eat out with sw but can be done. With sw you can do the diet if you are pregnant or breastfeeding as long as you consult your GP and midwife first which I will certainly do should I fall pregnant again.

StripyMouse · 22/07/2004 12:17

slimming world is great - no points to count or worrying about portion sizes. It is really simple - you choose whether to have green or red days or mix them up - red is mainly protein in form of meat and fish and low carbs so little of potatoes/rice/pasta where green days are veggie days with the reverse - ie. little protein and loads of pasta/rice/pots. simple. It is flexible as you can use the syn system as a way of feeling in control when you need to pig out a bit. Sure, there is not much junk food on the menu but to be honest the point of it is to eat more healthily and cut out the rubbish that is putting the weight on! It is the only official diet that the midwifery council (can?t remember exact name) will endorse as being suitable for use during pregnancy as it is a genuine lifestyle healthy, wholesome diet rather than a "lose fat quick" diet like many of the others. I have tried every diet under the sun from the cabbage soup, atkins, blood type, you name it and Slimming World has my vote every time.
