I think its no carbs at all isn't it? Lots of protein instead so you can have a fry-up for brekkie. But lots of sugars are interpreted as carbs. Sorry, not much help! Think its a pretty unhealthy way to lose weight but it works....

Unlimited meat. No potatoes. A certain amount of cheese. Typical meals might be steak and salad. chicken and veggies.

It works on the principle of changing the way your metabolism (could be spelt wrong) works. Instead of burning what you have just eaten it burns off your fat.

I did the diet for two weeks and lost 1 stone. But I couldnt stick to it as I not a great meat lover. look up the website as there are loads of info on there

It's been awhile since I did this, but from what I remember the first two weeks is only 20g of carbs a day. This is to wean you off of sugar addiction, which most of us have.

From then on it's different and I think you can gradually increase your carbs until you stop losing weight and then decrease them again.

i want to start the atkins diet . do i really have to go to the doctors for all the checks

I did the Atkins diet a while back and lost 20 lbs in about 10 weeks. Am currently doing it and am losing weight more slowly - if you stick with it the first time you attempt it works better. There is an excellent site on Ivillage - look up Atkins diet - bit like MN with lots of support and questions. I find it a healthy way to eat - lots of protein but lots of salad and veggies too. Occasionally I will have brea/potatoes/etc but go back on to the Atkins way. I feel great and for me it's more of a way of eating rather than a diet.

i have just finished reading the first part of the book i have to say my kitchen is full of carbs so what will my shopping list be?

Bradsmum · 22/07/2004 21:32

for the 1st 2 weeks (induction phase) you have to only eat pure proteins i.e. any meat, fish, eggs, poultry and up to 3 oz cheese per day. Also each day up to 20g of salad/veg (which is a lot of salad). You also need to eat some fats such as butter, mayo (not diet stuff), olive oil and up to 3 tablespoons of cream. So you could have for brekkie fried eggs and bacon with mushrooms, lunch meat/eggs and salad, dinner meat/eggs and veg with butter. For desert you could have diet jelly and cream. No caffeine but caffeine free drinks ok (and no drinks containing aspartame i.e. diet coke). Also you have to drink loads of water and I mean loads. Suggest you look at the atkins website and it is really worthwhile getting the book to understand how it works.

Hi there bradsmum or any one who knows, you mentioned that you could have jelly and cream, could you use the rowntrees sugar free powder jelly?? And caffine free coke?? I was unsure about drinking diet coke because of the added stuff.

Hi, I did a version of the Atkins diet a few years ago - I'm vegetarian and so a bit limiting for me - however what I did was cut out the starchy carbs - bread, potatoes, rice and pasta and had loads of fruit during the day and for meals had either fish or quorn with salad or steamed vegetables and avocado etc, I don't drink tea or coffee so just drank loads of hot water and I lost 1.5 stones in the 6 weeks and felt great. I then started to introduce some carbs back into my diet and the weight stayed off, but when I introduced bread back I put 2 stone on. Personally I think the Atkins diet should not be followed literally as you can't sustain it long-term, so now if I have carbs I have a really small portion. Its all about balanceed eating really.

I have lost a total of 24lbs on Atkins. Just got back from Prague and found I have put back on 3 (surprised it wasnt more actually!). So am back onto induction again for a few days. I have lots of cold meat, chicken, fish, eggs and cheese. Have lots of salad and veggie stir-frys with the meat - mushrooms, courgettes, peppers etc. lovely. And have the little sachets of sugar-free jelly with cream for pud. I did find that diet cola slowed down my weight loss, so have stopped drinking it and am drinking loads of water now, as well as herbal tea. It will be nice to compare stories/recipes/tips with others on Atkins as I have felt a bit out on a limb recently. Oh, and I would recommend joining the Atkins website (www.atkins-uk.com) as you can keep a daily record of everything you eat, a weekly record of your weight and measurements and it has answers to any question you may have. For what it is worth, I eat much much more healthily on Atkins than I do normally. It is a misconception that the diet is loaded with fat and therefore unhealthy. Apart from cheese and a little cream, I eat very little fat on it and eat much more veg than I would normally. I am having no additives in my diet, no caffeine, no sugar, reduced salt and masses of water. My skin has never ever looked better and I have loads of energy and no food cravings. It works for me.
