Partner thinks diets are nonsense

So I have been on Slimfast for 10days and down a respectable 4lbs. The last two days DP has told me that he doesn’t believe in diets, that he doesn’t think I should be on one, that he thinks I’ve been “brainwashed by the diet cult and thought I was smarter than that.” I’m really upset. I understand he thinks it’s overpriced nonsense and that I should eat real food (pls hold the baby so I have the time!) But this genuinely feels so unsupportive. I’m doing something for me, it’s going well, my engagement ring fits again, so why Is he so down on it?

Tbh, in your situation, if it's working and you can live with it, I'd carry on. If you typically maintain but are just trying to lose baby weight, it's as good a way as ever, providing you can stick to it. It's not like you're going to live on Slim Fast forever.

Ultimately, all diets work for some people. The trick is finding something that you can live with.

Today the issue is me having too many sweeteners. He says it’s because he’s worried all the chemicals will make me ill and I will die and leave him a widower. Always picking 😂

So he thinks you lack the intelligence to decide for yourself what to put in your body? Time to bluntly tell him to wind his neck in.

DaisyRaine90 · 14/10/2017 21:17

I did. 😂 As I said before I think he just likes the debate row sometimes.

🙄

He did make a healthy dinner tonight though (no butter in mash on shepherds pie, grated cheese to add afterwards instead of baked on the top so I could opt out).

He also asked me at lunch whether I was “eating” or “shaking” but he was smiling not having a dig.

I did confront him today though about how he is always criticising me.
He said that made him feel horrible and to pull him on it.

Progress 🙌🏼

& I lost another lb 😄

Tell him to produce the human studies that show artificial sweeteners are harmful to human health. The studies 'proving' cancer causation were done in rats who were fed the equivalent of a person drinking 100+ cans of diet soda per day.

OliviaD68 · 15/10/2017 09:17

@Cantseethewoods

Possibly for causation of cancer.

But would it be unreasonable for sweeteners to affect human gut microbiome in a way that could produce other unhealthy effects? Such as - counterintuitively - obesity?

I eat them sparingly. But I don’t think it’s an unreasonable hypothesis that they are not good for health.

I don’t think sweeteners are marvellous and have read how they can damage the gut. Still, I used to drink 6 cans of Pepsi Max a day and now I drink a few glasses of Robinson’s squash so think that’s a big step in the right direction. It’s not the end goal but I am on the way. 😊

@DaisyRaine90

Sweeteners could be contributory but not the main cause of weight gain I agree.

Main cause - if there’s one I would choose - is insulin. Hands down.

Good luck!

junebirthdaygirl · 15/10/2017 17:21

I don't think many dhs are going to say l love how healthy you are being while you do Slimfast. So really he is just normal.
Its your decision to do it so just carry on but definitely don't expect any encouragement as its not exactly the best way to go.

insancerre · 15/10/2017 17:25

Diets are a con, and an xpensive one at that
The only way to lose weight is to eat less and exercise more

For instant weight loss I recommend the 5-2 diet
No need to spend money on shakes or meals etc

OliviaD68 · 15/10/2017 17:40

@insancerre

Agree w you on diets. They don’t teach you anything. They are brands that hide the truth from us about what we are getting wrong.

Completely wrong on eating less and moving more because you are focusing on calories which is the solution to the wrong question.

Horrible advice which won’t work long term. Sorry.

Focus should be on insulin and managing that down. 5:2 or 16:8 can help but not if the wrong food gets eaten.
