Slimfast successes?

Has anyone used slimfast effectively? Does it work?

I've bought some to try was just wondering what others experiences if it are. I've got about 3 stone to lose in all and really feel like I need to completely reset my eating habits. Weight gain is from pregnancy nearly 18 months ago and then 18 months of poor food habits - grabbing high carb quick food when DD was small and it's all I had time for (we had a really tough birth and first few months in and out of hospital), eating too much cake with other new mums and not being able to exercise for months due to breaking my ankle in April. Also portion sizes, I need to decrease those, I've been dishing up the same size plates of food for me as OH, and at 5'4 I do not need to eat as much as a nearly 6ft, very active man! What a pig.

So I'm planning to use it until Xmas, if it's sustainable for that long. Starting back at the gym next week after finally being signed off by the physio so that should help too.

If it makes a different I have PCOS so have always struggled to maintain a healthy weight. I was about 1/2 stone overweight when I got pregnant.

Any tips or success stories?

I was thinking about trying too, as a kick start to better habits, not long term.

I keep trying to eat better and falling back to bad habits.

sleepymama81 · 20/09/2017 08:35

Yes I'm not thinking long term. I want to do it for 3 months max, shift some weight during that time and reset my eating habits. I'm a SAHM so the urge to pick constantly being at home is there (or just grab things that are quick, easy and unhealthy).

I used the tesco slimfast brand shakes, 2 shakes a day, 3 snacks and a meal. I had a problem with binge eating and just eating for no reason at all but I struggled going straight onto a healthy eating diet because there was still so much thought about food and having to plan healthy meals which ended up with binging so I love the fact I only need to think about one meal a day and the other two are taken care of. The first few days were rough and I felt hungry all the time but it gets easier and I barely feel hungry now meaning my portion sizes for my meal are automatically smaller. I've lost 1 stone in 3 weeks.

MrsDneedsaB · 20/09/2017 09:02

I did it and lost about 2 stone, wasn't on it for very long though...maybe 6 weeks? The meals in between had to be pretty low calorie for any substantial amount of loss (especially if you will be having the snacks) although I did find it better to have my meal at lunch time and a shake for dinner. I also found afterwards that I was making better food choices, even after only 6 weeks. However a lot of people find the deprivation causes them to carb binge once they stop as a lot of people see it as a temporary fix, if you don't feel like you're depriving yourself you may fair better.

Pro-tip, skimmed milk and ice make the shakes super thick and filling!

I did put the weight back on but it's because I developed a hormone imbalance and the pills make me insulin resistant and lactose intolerant - no connection to slim fast but not helpful either - 7 stone piled on later and most diets are impossible for me now

MrsDneedsaB · 20/09/2017 09:03

I actually also did the Tesco version as the shakes are far more delicious than the slim fast ones - talk about drinking cardboard!

OliviaD68 · 20/09/2017 22:26

If this is temporary what will be permanent? And why not get on the permanent lifestyle now?

I lost two stone eating fresh foods and love it. Eating powder out of a box for months sounds like torture

sleepymama81 · 21/09/2017 09:39

Because I've tried that @OliviaD68 . I slip back into crap eating habits so easily. Oh I'll just have a bit of this or that and before I know it I've eaten rubbish again.

If I can think 'no food all day until dinner' and not think about it anymore then it'll be easier - I'm very all or nothing. Then introduce healthy meals again slowly once I've kicked the habit (and lost weight so I'll be more motivated to keep up the good work) so to speak.

I've used Slimfast on and off for years. It's always a good boost to kickstart a diet I think. I started with twice a day and main meal at midday. Once I'd lost a stone or so I dropped to one a day (breakfast) and ate better the rest of the day. I also got the confidence to join the gym once I'd lost enough to feel comfortable in gym gear.

Off topic, I also found the 'Special K drop a jean size in 2 weeks' diet good also as a kickstart.

OliviaD68 · 21/09/2017 10:47

Thanks @WatchingFromTheWings. I've had a look at what SlimFast offers and here's my view based on some research I've been doing:

  • It's calorie restricted and so ignores how the body processes carbs vs proteins vs fats. All calories are not created equal and I care about health first and weight loss second
  • A slimfast shake has 34 g of net carbs per serving - that's almost as much as a can of full sugar Coke. That can't be good for you

So I think I'll pass on this because I disagree with calorie restriction as being healthy and I don't think adding more sugar to my diet is going to help me lose weight.

I appreciate your advice but I think - for me - that there is a healthier way to lose weight

Invisimamma · 21/09/2017 12:47

I've decided to go for it, I need to do something and have very little will power, slimfast removes any element of choice and I think that what I need right now.

I'm planning 2 weeks initially.

sleepymama81 · 21/09/2017 14:37

When are you starting @Invisimamma? I'm going to on Tuesday, when I get back from a long weekend away.

I'm starting today!

ImaginingDragons · 22/09/2017 08:12

I've lost nearly 4 stone doing Slimfast since February. I know the critics will say that I'll put it all back on, but I genuinely feel that it has changed my eating habits. I feel really healthy and I've just started going to the gym again. I buy the 'starter boxes' from Amazon on repeat order so all my food is there, I don't have to constantly think about food or worry if I don't have things in the house. It suits me and suits my lifestyle.

Good luck to those just starting!
