Can I lose weight and still drink alcohol?

So, for the first time ever, I find myself needing to lose weight - about 2 stone (or as much as possible)... ideally in the next couple of months

Trouble is, I love wine... am I doomed before I even start?

Wine made me fat. Sad but true. Plus of course all the shit that I'd eat after a couple of glasses Sad It's basically just liquid sugar that reduces your willpower. If you can drink it and lose weight then I take my hat off to you.

Yes.

You could probably still lose weight if you limited your alcohol intake to 4 or 5 units per week but alcohol is horrible for weight loss.

Apologies for linking to the Daily Fail but I think this article explains to problem alcohol and weight

Yes you can. I have lost over a stone and a half since January by walking at least 10k steps a day, eating two meals a day within a noon-8pm window (eat what I like). I have the occasional treat - an ice cream, slice of cake but perhaps once a fortnight. Three nights a week I drink -1/2 bottle of wine. Every week. This has been slow weightloss, but the easiest ever. Except it is slow. I took the long term view, I wanted to end the year lighter than at the start and knew I could not diet. So, yes you can drink wine and still lose weight - but don't expect rapid weightloss.

I used to drink 2 or 3 bottles of wine a week. DH always does dry January, so I decided to do it with him one year, it stretched to the end of February in the end and I lost a stone. I changed nothing about my diet and did no exercise. The only thing I did, was stop drinking wine.

Bollocks.

I'm not a 4-5 units a week kind of gal, unfortunately. It's kind of all the bottle or nothing.

Ok, so one of the 'best' alcohol is gin and slimline, is that right?

See, I did dry January this year and lost not a jot. 😡

I genuinely believe that weight loss is simply calories in versus calories out so as long as you are expending more than you are consuming you will lose weight. I know some people make it more complicated than that buy for me this works.

How much or how quickly depends on the difference between the two so from my experience it is perfectly possible to enjoy a glass or two of wine as long as you have saved the calories somewhere else or earnt them through exercise.

For weight loss to be successful it has to be sustainable. If you enjoy wine cutting it out of your diet altogether is not realistic so it is much better to find a way of eating that you can stick to long term.

Also remember Prosecco is actually quite low in cals, about 90 cals a glass I think (admittedly the glasses are quite small!!!)

Exactly what NewYear said! You'll lose more quickly by cutting it out, but you're more likely to stick to it and actually lose at all if you just moderate. I have gone from drinking every evening a few years ago to only drinking at weekends now, and my weight loss is aaaaagonisingly slow compared to lots of other people's, but I've lost over 20lbs. Some people would have lost patience and focus, whereas I'm happy to plug away at it for longer and keep my little pleasures. It's horses for courses.

And yes, gin and slim is your friend! Or vodka and slim if that's your poison.

It's not the same though
