Best way to lose weight

Talk to me - probably 3 stone till "healthy", 5 stone till happy.

Can't just blast it at gym thanks to chronic pain issues. Can't cut entire food groups either (i.e. Dairy - osteoporosis).

Burn more calories than you eat. It really is as simple as that. There is no quick fix. How you choose to do that is up to you.

But is something like my fitness pal best or weight watchers or what?

just eat less and move more. You don't NEED to be paying for stuff to help you lose weight.

If you feel you need to do something in a group or you will fail, then, to be honest, from past experience, you are not ready to put the effort in and will fail.

My starting stats were similar to yours OP a couple of months ago. I'm following the man plan on exante. However if you cannot cut out carbohydrates it won't be any good. It's my first time low carbing it and I'm losing around 2lb a week.

Unfortunately there isn't one way that's the right way, it depends on how your brain works and the best fit for your life style. I personally am very happy to way things and like numbers so calorie counting and a Fitbit works well for me. Others get on wel, with Low Carb High Fat, others find Intermittent Fasting works wel, for them.

Maybe have a read through a few threads here on the various different approach and see if any strikes a chord.

There has been some academic research into various diets. The outcome was they all work as long as you stick to them. You need to find one that suits you and that you can stick to. Good luck.

Moving more is the issue beyond. In a lot of pain so I simply can't just go out for a walk or a jog.

Mfp is great. It's free. It's factual. Enter your meals for the whole day. Rely on veg stir fries etc. Try and work in a 100 calorie snack. I have to be really busy and not think about food. Have loads of veg and salad with each meal. Just basically don't consume too many calories.

Thanks mushroom - how many Cals do you consume per day?

Perhaps I should have phrased this "best way to lose weight on diet alone"

Sorry to hear that. Google a TDEE calculator and put your details in there, it will give you an idea of how much you burn a day which if you decide to go the calorie counting route will be helpful.

Nothing drastic. I've a similar amount to lose and am about to start low carbing again. But not as low as say Atkins. Basically no crap carbs. No bread, pasta, potatoes, white rice or sugar or processed foods.

So breakfast will be full fat Greek yogurt with berries (they are lower in carbs than other fruits) and some nuts and seeds or scrambled eggs. Lunch will be a big salad with protein and a dressing of a decent mayo and or olive oil. Dinner - normal meals but replacing carbs with alternatives such as cauliflower rice or courgetti. Or just adding extra veg instead of a carb side. No alcohol for me for two weeks which will be hard! Lots of water. Lots. I'm also going to drink a few cups of green tea every day which helps boost metabolism.

I do exercise. I love spinning classes and walking. But if you can't at the moment you can't. Just try not sitting as much as normal. Just move around more. Hopefully as you lose you will find it easier.

Come over the the low carb bootcamp threads and give it a try, to see whether it wold work for you. Its a very supportive community. At the top of every bootcamp thread, there is a spreadsheet which sets out how it all works, including links to recipe threads and current research.

it is very much focused on food consumption, rather than on activity, so might be worth at least a try.

I can only lose on 1200. It's tricky as I love carbs but that's where all the calories are! I have porridge for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch and dinner would be stir fry with rice or noodles or curry with rice. Or I will have oven chips but have to weigh them out but it's fine. I have a low calorie hot chocolate in the evening if I have a craving. I could definitely eat smarter.

I've started running and it's toned my legs but hasn't helped with weight loss.

Sometimes it's hard but being fat and not fitting in my clothes is harder.

I eat between 1600 and 1900 calories a day, I don't exercise and I have lost 3.5stone in 6mths.

I eat what I like for my meals and so don't eat anything in between.

Consequently I don't eat any refined sugars now, or sweets, chocolate or cake.

Thank you 😊 I'll come over for a look.

I'm going to try hobbling couch to 5k but not sure how it will go!

I know the consensus on here is he's a bit of a twat but Richie Howey on Facebook explains 'metabolic adaptation' well, hence my calorie intake being deemed as higher than a regular 'dieter'.

I've cut out big carbs and junk food and have lost 3 stone in 3 months. I have a few shakes a day and a meal involving meat and veg/salad. It's melting away! Good luck OP.

If you want some more support to help you lose weight and keep it off I've just finished and would recommend the OurPath programme. Not really a diet, it's super easy to follow with no calorie/points counting like the other companies so easy to maintain in the future. You get support without having to go to face-to-face group meetings, its all over an app which is way easier and helps motivation so much. They give you a FitBit as well which helps- I started with short walks and have almost made it to a 5k!

Men who want to lose weight should know that exercise speeds your metabolism, dieting without exercise slows your metabolism and you need to burn 3,500 more calories than you consume to lose 1 pound.

^^ should've been in speech marks as it's not from me. But the principle is the same for males/females.

Hattie100 do you have a link to the Our Path info please? I'm looking into online diet plans, am on the brink of signing up to the Freedom Diet Coach one, but would like to look at this one too to compare before I make a decision. Thanks x

It's ok I've found their website now - £60 per month?! That's a bit too pricey for me, the other one's only £75 for 6 weeks, or £100 for 12 so think I'll go for that. Sorry for the hijack Grin

What and how much you are eating makes all the difference.

For starters, you should be counting calories (I always recommend the www.myfitnesspal.com/ app). Generally speaking, 1500 calories is enough to create a daily deficit.

If you haven't already, cut out any and all empty calories from things like junk food, sugary drinks etc, you'll quickly see how many of your daily calories are taken up by junk.

In addition to that, make sure you're drinking enough water (generally about one gallon per day). Again, using an app to track your progress can be super helpful!

As for exercise, could you try something low impact? Maybe swimming at a local pool or yoga? You should check out the free trial for Beachbody's 3 Week Yoga Retreat: www.beachbody.com/product/fitness_programs/3-week-yoga-retreat-beginners.do

...you can get through the first two weeks before you spend anything, so you should be able to see if you can manage without experiencing too much pain.
