NEW TO SLIMMING WORLD - Is this normal at a meeting?

Joined Slimming World last week. Rather surprised to see two members tucking into packets of crisps and chocolate bars whilst waiting for consultant to start his talk. No-one in the group had lost any weight at all.
This week, same thing, watched as one bloke ate a cream cake followed by a couple of giant cookies. I was the only one to have lost weight, and most people had had a gain. Is this what normally goes on?

is this a joke?

lulumama · 29/03/2007 16:08

maybe you went to Marjorie;s Fat fighters ?

allieBongo · 29/03/2007 16:09

did they recommend you eat dust?

lulumama · 29/03/2007 16:10

great minds allie how are you anyway?

cactuslady · 29/03/2007 16:22

No, it's not a joke, it's a genuine Slimming world meeting. The consultant saw them eating and said nothing. It's really not what I expected at all.
I just want to know whether it happens at other meetings, as I want to say something next week. Not impressed at all.

That's mental

I usually eat loads at SW meetings, but that's because they are in the morning and I never have time to eat brekkie (plus I often feel the need to cheat the scales, althiygh it never works ) But then I eat a Hi Fi bar and fruit normally.

It sounds like a joke.

Go to another group

allieBongo · 29/03/2007 16:38

i would try somewhere else. what motivation is that?

cactuslady · 29/03/2007 17:18

I lost 5 lbs - I know it's my first week and it's normal to have a biggish loss at first, but the cream cake-eating man said "You wait love, you'll soon be in the same boat as us!"
I really wish I'd said something now. Do you think I could change groups without having to pay my joining fee again?
Any consultants on here, or anyone going to a meeting before Wednesday who could ask for me? Don't want to fork out another tenner!

I think this is terrible. As a former consultant i wouldn't have allowed it. Fruit and hi fi bars are accpetable, especially when members have starved themselves in hope of a good weight loss
But cream cakes! No! No! No!

This consultant must be rubbing her hands together at all the money she is taking from people who she is obviously not motivating.
I would say this warrants a change of clubs and maybe a complaint to head office.

fireflyfairy2 · 29/03/2007 18:09

I can't believe this. WHy are they paying each weight to gain or stay the same???

Was the talk motivational at all??

raspberryberet · 29/03/2007 18:14

I can't imagine any SW leader worth her salt letting that go unchallenged.

Come to think of it, I can't imagine anyone paying a fiver a week to sit and stuff cream cakes and cookies while they wait to see how much weight they have gained. Most people who cheat on diets don't do it in front of other people.

If this is true then the leader needs reporting to SW. You can ask whether you can change clubs when you talk to them.

cactuslady · 29/03/2007 19:19

There wasn't really a motivational talk. It's weighing, then everyone gets their names called out in turn and are clapped regardless even if they've lost, gained or stayed the same. He asks the people who haven't lost why they think that is ( errr... I think it's quite obvious) He asks whether you're doing a green or red day, then there's a raffle and someone wins some fruit. Then home. No mention of any products, recipes or discussions.
I didn't think it was right, tbh.

Well, usually the way it works is:

Your name is called out & the amount of weight you have lost to date. That gets a clap. Then she says whether you have lost or gained, she asks what kind of week we had & if we have gained she asks what we might have done dofferently this week compared to the weeks we have lost weight. If we have a big gain & no explanation she asks us to leave her our food diaries & she will call us during the week for a chat. TBH she calls during the week most weeks, she's really supportive.

The fruit goes to slimmer of the week. That is the person who has the most weight off, but has also lost the week before. ie: last night I had lost 4lb, the most in the group, but because I had gained weight last week it didn't go to me [I am sure there are other reason why people get SOTW, that's just one of the reasons I know]

The raffle is usually for a good prize, a set of scales to weigh food, some items for a particular recipe, or a sw recipe book etc...

Other people chat & give us their favourite recipes & every now & again we all bring in something from our fave recipes. Eg: Last night was our consultants year anniversary of beginning the class in our area, so we all made bits & took them in, fruit kebabs, chicken curry etc..all made to sw recipes.

Are you sure that the things people are eating in class aren't the bars they sell there? [Can't remember their name] And the crisps may have been ryvita minis?? They are sold at our sw classes???

cactuslady · 30/03/2007 00:05

Thanks for that explaination, didn't understand how SOW worked.
I'm absolutely sure of the food being consumed - Walkers Sensations, Kettle Chips, orange Club biscuits, and Sainsbury's choc eclair and giant cookies.

I've decided to give it another week and speak to the consultant and phone head office if things are the same.

Thanks everyone.

cactus lady - that sounds hilarious, albeit not really what you wanted out of the meeting.

IntergalEGGticWalrus · 30/03/2007 13:02

btw, you can change groups without paying the joining fee again

xenabelly · 31/03/2007 18:29

what a crazy meeting! Bet you were totally baffled by it!

At the meetings I go to (only joined 4wks ago) the consultant talks and talks and talks about her week, what her kids are doing at school, how her other SW classes are going, what her manager has said to her, what her working day entails, where she lives, her new kitchen....and then when she's finished, she goes round every member asking how they are and they proceed to tell the group about a wedding they went to, their sister in law's cat, how much next doors house went for, their bunions....and very occasionally someone says something related to SW and how they are coping with the diet. The meetings last 1.5hrs!!

I didn't stay to the last one and the leader seemed most upset and said that i should stay cos it gives me more support!!
