Is this considered obese?

I am 5ft6.5 and 93kg and my BMI puts me at obese but I'm a size 12/14 in clothes which I didn't think would be seen as obese. I know I'm a little overweight but I don't have a double chin or a purtruding gut or anything that I would consider to be features of obesity.
It's making me really upset when I go to the doctors because they keep saying I'm obese and at risk of health problems and should lose 4 stone but I think I'd be way to thin at that weight. What do you think? Am I just deluded and I am actually obese :(

I am looking to lose around two stone (already lost one, gone down from size 16) but no more because I've been 11stone before and looked too thin

Are you sure you're 5'6.5"?

Potterhead113 · 28/07/2017 20:18

I haven't measured myself in a while if I'm honest, I'll do it again and see how tall I am

OP posts:
Potterhead113 · 28/07/2017 20:20

I haven't grown I don't think though, I'm so confused because when my doctor said I was obese I was like what?!

OP posts:
SeamusMacDubh · 28/07/2017 20:21

I think a lot of people hear the word obese and imagine Britain's fattest man or something when actually LOADS of people are obese now

Veterinari · 28/07/2017 20:22

OP could you post a pic - one of your torso/legs in leggings/plain t shirt. No head neeeded for anonymity

Potterhead113 · 28/07/2017 20:24

I don't really want to do that incase people I know recognise me but I'll find a picture of a person who looks similar to me

Obese isn't a criticism or a value judgement on you as a person, it's a medical term based on a mathematical formula. BMI isn't infallible, obviously, but I don't think it should be just dismissed.

I say this as someone who is also obese but gets told I'm "not fat". I'm tall and hourglass shaped and I hide it well. I'm certainly not as fat as some people who I know are a similar weight or even weigh less (very grateful for favourable fat distribution) but I still do weigh that amount, and it puts an extra strain on my joints and my body in general.

Potterhead113 · 28/07/2017 20:26

I look like a combination of the two but with more ab muscles, I have a flatter stomach than the woman in blue bikini and size DD breasts

Oh, and I'm 5'10, weigh 105kg and am a size 16.

Potterhead113 · 28/07/2017 20:33

Maybe I have a different idea of obese but neither me or many people I know would consider those women obese, just a little overweight

OP posts:
zonkin · 28/07/2017 20:33

At 5ft8 and 72 kg I was wearing size 12/14. I now weigh 10 kg less and wear 10-12 depending on the shop. I can't see how at 93kg you could wear 12-14.

Agree a torso pic would give us a better idea

AccrualIntentions · 28/07/2017 20:36

But you are obese, if that's what you weigh. There doesn't have to be a specific look, and if you have more muscle then your body fat will probably be in a healthier range than someone else the same weight. You'd still be obese though, there's no "considered obese", you just are or aren't.

eurochick · 28/07/2017 20:36

I'm 5'6 and I would feel enormous at that weight. Post partum I was at my heaviest - 11stone - and on the borderline of healthy and overweight. I was wearing a size 12. I felt heavy and sluggish. At that weight you are obese and could do with losing some weight for the good of your health. Sorry but you did ask!

Ktown · 28/07/2017 20:39

The two measures are bmi 25 and over is overweight and waist measurement which isn't supposed to be over 32 inches in females
As for dress size with vanity sizing size 12 is pretty big these days so it isn't a good measure
I'd consult the NHS website though

Potterhead113 · 28/07/2017 20:40

eurochick with my background in sports I am probably fitter than you so saying i should lose weight for my health is incorrect, I am very fit and healthy and eat very well. However I have said I am planning on losing two stone (already lost one) because I don't like how I look aesthetically

Potterhead113 · 28/07/2017 20:43

My GP always comments on how good my stats are and how healthy I am then said I was obese after doing my BMI when he has never mentioned weight to me before

OP posts:
SonicBoomBoom · 28/07/2017 21:30

I have never known any woman who looked "too thin" at 11 stone.

Maybe if she was 6ft tall. But even then, I doubt it.

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 28/07/2017 22:41

I'm so confused OP. Female swimmers are muscular but slim these days, with very characteristic long, lean muscles. Did you use to do water polo or a different sport that involved swimming?

To give you an idea, currently swimming Olympic medallists are as follows:

Aleksandra Herasimenja: 175cm and 60 kg
Simone Manuel: 180cm and 67kg
Perilla Blume :170cm and 58kg

None of them have bulgey leg muscles or are anywhere near overweight.

ArDali1 · 28/07/2017 23:23

Potterhead113
If you are fit, muscular, very healthy, then I don't think you are overweight. Maybe you look it but in terms of how fit you are then no. muscle weighs more than fat, as people have already mentioned, do you regularly exercise? Keep fit in gym or something?Health is not always relative to size, if you look at sumo wrestlers for instance, they look morbidly obese but are they unhealthy and not in shape? No, you'd be surprised what you read about them and what they do.

YolandasFridge · 28/07/2017 23:26

I put your stats into the NHS bmi calculator and I'm afraid I must agree , there's no way you can be that weight for your height and it be healthy , no matter how much swimming you did or currently do.
At 93kg it says you should lose 30kg, a third of your body weight.
Your original post was very open but then as the replies have come in you have become a bit defensive. It leads me to think you know the answer to your question..

Good luck with the weight loss , it's not easy but maybe this will spur you on, upsetting as it is

lougle · 28/07/2017 23:57

I have been reading, but I'm really struggling to marry up the information in your early posts with your pictures and your later posts, tbh.

I'm 5'8", weigh 64.4 kg, have a very small frame and bust, but due to having 3 children, even the extra 8kg that I've gained since having children sits on my waist and my weak core gives me a 'tummy'. I'm nowhere near overweight, but I can't imagine what an extra 30 kg would look like on me, and I'm 2" taller than you.

My DH is 5'10" (4 inches taller than you) weighs 81kg (13 kg lighter than you), and is still considered overweight.

My mother is 5'4" (2 inches shorter than you) and has a bigger bust than you, but weighs 85 kg, and she is in a size 14/16. There is no doubt that she is obese.

Was it really a surprise to you to find out that you were overweight?

Figgygal · 29/07/2017 01:02

The lowest adult weight I've ever been was 11 stone 3

I was all bones and did look too thin but I'm 5ft 11

ThinkOfTheHorses · 29/07/2017 01:03

Well I'm 5'4 and 53 kg and don't think I'm particularly thin( though def not large) so I think nearly double that is def not healthy tbh

Potterhead113 · 29/07/2017 01:56

I am not defensive just confused. I don't understand as much as any of you do. I look like those pictures but I fit a size 12/14 at 92kg. It's baffling to say the least.

Also a lot of people are saying how I should lose a lot of weight (30kg as one poster said) I do not and probably never will want to lose that much. I have been that weight before and didn't like how I looked, I am happier and healthier now or at a stone or two less.
