Am I doing something wrong?

Hi all,

I am relatively slim already but am looking to lose up to 5kg ideally.

I have been swimming three times a week for three weeks so far (800m at a quick pace) and walk the dogs for a total of 90 minutes each day.

I thought I had been eating well, but I have actually gained 1kg since the last time I weighed myself. Confused

Today's meals have been:
Breakfast: quarter cup of oats soaked in water and cooked with a splash of milk; chopped banana on top

Snack: plain Kettle chips Sad

Lunch: sandwich and lots of fruit: berries, kiwi and a mandarin

Dinner: curried sausages with rice

I'm just not sure where I'm going wrong. I have, for the most part, cut out sugars and refined foods (kettle chips is an anomaly as they aren't normally in the house). I eat a lot of fruit; more than the average person, but I can't imagine that it would cause me to gain weight?

Fruit is still calories and sugar. I don't think it's very good to eat too much. There aren't any vegetables in there. Make a switch?

Dinner would normally have more veggies but was looking for a quick and easy dinner with the kids as I've just gone back to work.

I do eat a whole capsicum and half an avocado in place of some of the fruit most days, but didn't do that today.

I may have to cut down on the fruit.

You sometimes gain a little weight at first when taking on a new exercise regime as your muscles retain water whilst they developing. If you have been feeling a bit sore this is a good sign of that. I'd stick to your new plan a couple more weeks and see how it goes.
Personally I like to keep carbs a bit lower, I'd swap the sandwich for a salad most days, reduce fruit a bit and have a small portion of rice and bulk out with veggies.

It's full of carbs!

I only eat that many before marathon training! Green veg? Protein? There's not much in there

Are you walking the dog and getting a bit out of breath or just strolling slowly?

Water intake?

Will reduce carbs

Walk the dogs at a good pace. Have to stop frequently because the beagle sniffs every blade of grass.

2L of water every day and have done that for years.

Keep the carbs you like best and reduce the ones you aren't so bothered about. If you really like a sandwich but not so bothered about porridge then have eggs for breakfast and choose a lower carb bread or whatever is best for you.
Even if you don't want to go on a real low carb diet reducing them down will help.

Exercise isn't that great for losing weight I find - I mean, yes, great to do it - but it burns off relatively little calories. Would suggest low carb - keeps you full and can work a treat - but does require being v organised and cooking most food from scratch

SuperBeagle · 20/07/2017 09:47

If I cut the sandwich and some of the fruit at lunch and replce it with some sweet potato mash, would that be better? Still carbs but I find I burn out by 3pm if I haven't had something carby at lunch:

So lunch would look like:
Sweet potato mash
Half avocado
Whole capsicum
Maybe a couple of strawberries?

I find the porridge in the morning to be the best thing as I swim first thing (6am) so I'm famished afterwards and porridge keeps me full longer than anything else I've tried.

I agree that cutting back carbs is necessary.

Do you. Weight yourself every day? If I didn't and I weighed myself on a "heavy" day I would have thought I've gained weight. Also I think it's too much food...

Fruit is just sugar and acts the same way as sweets would. Try veggies instead
