Low carb packed lunch for hiking

Mudmagnetoftheworld · 30/06/2017 09:20

I need ideas for some simple low carb packed lunches to keep me going on fairly long hikes.

This morning I weighed in at 1stone down Smile and have at least another to go. I'm going on a hiking holiday with friends shortly and need an alternative to sandwiches for lunch.
Don't want to take anything heavy or too bulky, as I'll be carrying it around.
Ideally it should be quick to throw together too.

Would I be lacking in energy if I went hiking with just some nuts, fruit, possibly a yogurt? And could I keep this up for a week of walking or would I be better having sandwiches for the energy?
Any other ideas would be very much appreciated!

Salad box with cheese

Cheese and ham roll ups

Aldi and M&S do some gorgeous picnic food which is low carb so you could grab some bits and keep them in a fridge and just make some boxes up.

Pot of ff Greek yogurt and some berries

Pork scratchings

Mini homemade quiches (made in greased bun tins with no pastry obvs)

Chopped vegetables

Chunks of cheese

Cold ham/chicken

Thanks for those..
Like the idea of the quiches in bun tins, wonder how long they'd keep for in the fridge....

Pork scratchings!!! I forgot about those!

Slices of smoked salmon and capers.

Carrots, celery.

Protein bars.

I think you're better including some carbs for a week of walking. How far are you planning on covering each day?

Movablefeast · 01/07/2017 19:30

You definitely need plenty of protein in your food to keep your energy levels up while walking.

Cheese sticks, sardines, tuna, apples.

If you are exercising every day a lot more than usual you do need to up your calories or you will get hungry. You will be building more muscle too so all good.

How about trying some heavy German rye bread - the vacuum packed stuff? You get it in every supermarket, it's really filling, I have it with cheese slices (leerdamer or emmental) also available in every supermarket.

Also bring boiled eggs with you. So filling, and the energy you get lasts for hours.

I've been trying to lose weight for a while and been doing long hill walks too. I also pack a box of nakd bars if you've seen them? As when you're drained you get crazy sugar cravings. Those bars are literally dates and nuts mixed together- they're delicious and deal with any sugar cravings.

I would definitely be sensible about eating a good filling lunch as you want to make the most of the holiday and not feel weak, or let the group down etc.

Although even before I've been trying to watch what I eat I always avoided normal bread when I was hill walking as it doesn't fill you up as much as German rye bread.

Oh and oatcakes too are brilliant in terms of really filling long lasting energy but not bloating. With boiled eggs, oatcakes and an apple one day, and German rye bread and cheese slices the next you'll be set for some powerful walking.

Enjoy the holiday- am really jealous!!

Thank you all so much for the ideas.
I'll try and see if I can get hold of some German rye bread.
Planning on roughly doing between 10-15 miles a day possibly more, so definitely don't want to run out of steam and slow everyone down!

Thanks again..
