Neris & India's Idiot Proof Diet - Anyone else trying this ?

I've been doing this diet since about the 12th feb and have lost 8lb's so far.
My dd is almost 3 and I've never really lost my tummy - after being very slim pre-pregnancy.

I've tried weightwatchers and slimming world and the original Atkins but couldn't maintain any of them AND so didn't lose anything.

I'm a bit disappointed with the weight loss on this eating plan so far but to put it into perspective ....

  1. I want to lose 19lbs in total so 8lbs is a steady healthy weight loss in the time I have been doing it
  2. I've lost 6cm off my tummy
  3. 6cm off my waist
  4. 4cm off my hips
  5. 2cm off each arm

I find not being allowed fruit yet very difficult and I love nice bread but on the whole I'm sticking to it. I'm currently in Phase 2 - Linseed Oil bread week. ugh!

You have to have willpower but at least you can eat Green & Blacks Dark Choc !!!!

AitchTwoOh · 31/03/2009 21:15

(india's mysteriously flabby outstretched arms [hmm)>

procrastinatingparent · 31/03/2009 21:35

OK. August 9th to December 20th - 21 weeks - 24kg = 3.8 stones (52.9 pounds).

It helped that we were having building work done, and therefore not entertaining so I didn't have to make puddings for guests (my usual downfall) or indeed cook very much at all.

Now I have to lose 8 kg again.

AitchTwoOh · 31/03/2009 22:13

thing is, it could only ever be a temporary kick start for me, i really don't want to eat loads of protein for the rest of my life, so how does it go when you stop? if you'd been eating what you've been eating recently would you have put on the weight or did the protein change something? (the book kinda says it does but that surely is bollocks, isn't it?)

procrastinatingparent · 31/03/2009 22:38

Haven't read the book (I'm a GI-diet but more extreme girl) but sounds like bollocks to me. Think if protein has changed something forever, IK's arms would not wobble.

Their diet sounds too limiting to do for any length of time. There is something to be said for a kickstart, though, just because the first bit of losing weight is sooooo tedious - nothing nice to eat and no reward of feeling slimmer yet.

In my ideal world (one in which I had even an ounce of self-control), my normal diet would consist of low-GI carbs, fruit and veg, lots of legume-type protein with some lean meat, and I would only ever eat anything sugary with a meal every now and again. And I would exercise more.I can't believe I wouldn't keep the weight off with that.

I lived on chicken omelettes with tomato and spinach. And chicken on wholemeal pita bread. And apples and coke zero. And I felt full and not too hungry. But I wasn't BF and I'm not having any more children, so I didn't have to worry about anyone else's health IYSWIM.

Feeling fat is pants, and losing weight is worth the hassle.

My parents both started it last year, lost a bit of weight, but now can't eat any bread/oats/rice type carbs or they begin to gain weight heftily again. My dad is positively miserable and feels imprisoned by it. My mum has this weird glassy eyed look and despite initially keeping the weight off, it has begun to creep back on.

The problem is that as soon as you go out of ketosis the appetite suppressant feature is gone which is what makes it hard. This is also something I saw on the IPD website, people agonising over eating a bowl of porridge (as you are supposed to introduce non refined carbs towards the end of phase 3) and people sticking on phase 1 and 2 because they were unable to control their carb intake when they went back to normal (healthy, low processed carb, etc) food.

Can I just a put a word in for the Carb Addicts Diet - I was converted last year and it is FAB. It's a low carb breakfast, lunch and a normal dinner as long as you consume your dinner within 1 hour you can eat any meal, pudding, wine etc. Obviously you don't go mad and stuff your face in an hour long binge (at least not a after the first few days ). It works by insulin control and is very effective without the deprivation of other low carb plans.

AitchTwoOh · 02/04/2009 21:14

gosh, just the word imprisoned makes me want to run a mile from this. how is it possible that eating carbs suddenly makes you gain weight when they wouldn't have before? i JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND.
funny you mention the carb addicts diet, i remember seeing that on oprah a few years ago and i ordered the book cos it mentioned that the guy's high bp went away. i must look it out and read it, i think in those days the idea of not eating carbs seemed more cranky so that's why i didn't do it.
have they updated the look of the book at all? it was just a middle aged couple on the front, looking not v glam.

AitchTwoOh · 02/04/2009 21:16

lol have just found their website... doesn't look like they've revamped.

Dilettante · 03/04/2009 11:07

Aitch, I think the first thing is once you go back on carbs you gain about 5 lb literally overnight which is water retention as your body needs extra water to process the carbs. Secondly, you've been eating to appetite on fat and protein but once carbs are back in the equation you simply can't do that.

As other people have said, if you managed to either keep pretty low carb after you reached goal weight, or if you managed to eat only good carbs and keep a decent calorie balance, you'd probably be OK. However, to my mind, there is something about cutting out one food group be it fat or carbs that makes the metabolism and body ping back crazily wanting to eat its own body weight in the previously banned substance.

The thing that is good about the CAD is that you don't go into ketosis so if you go off plan every now and then it is not the end of the world. Plus, you can eat fruit at your reward meal, you don't have to make a big deal out of being on a diet etc etc.

There is a new updated book called Carb. Addicts Life Plan which is a bit more strict, you are supposed to eat roughly equal portions of protein fat and carbs whereas the old one allowed you to eat whatever you wanted as long as it was within the 1 hour. My experience, and others seem to agree, is that if you're still young (premenopausal) you can lose weight on the old version even if you eat chips and ice cream at your reward meal, but once you hit menopause you need to be a lot more strict to get the same losses.

AitchTwoOh · 03/04/2009 14:01

ah, i take it's that's also why people lose weight so quickly, cos they're losing that water.
doesn't the cad advocate having a third each of some ghastly vegetable like broccoli and yer pasta (mac n cheese as i recall, bloomin americans) and some protein?

Dilettante · 03/04/2009 14:56

No. Well maybe they did, but here's typical day for me

scrambled eggs with a side of spinach (from frozen leaf spinach) - coffee

chicken breast, green salad with vinaigrette

dinner: homemade juice eg carrot/apple/ginger, salad of red cabbage, sweetcorn, carrot and olives with dressing - smallish plate of tuna pasta bake - fruit yogurt, banana, decaff coffee and a biscuit.

I try to eat as much fruit and veg in the one hour reward meal as poss. to ensure good nutrition. Often I'm finished eating after 3 mins anyway.

Dilettante · 03/04/2009 14:57

erm heh heh oops - I meant 35 mins

AitchTwoOh · 03/04/2009 21:13

i have just finished a bowl of sultana bran... i fear low carbing is not for me.

procrastinatingparent · 07/04/2009 11:32

I see your bowl of sultana bran and I raise you 2 bowls of Alpen.

AddisonMontgomerySheppard · 10/05/2009 22:09

Hello
Just seen that this is here

I am starting again on this having lost about 21lbs 2 years ago pre-DS. I loved that I didn't feel hungry when I was doing it.
Anyone else?
