I've always been naturally slim but am therefore greedy and lazy; I live in a big city and walk everywhere but I freelance from home (sedentary / too many cups of tea and biscuits).

All this means I am skinny fat/flabby, or whatever the expression is. I'm 5'6 and weigh about 48 kg - which has pretty much been my weight my whole adult life - but am out of shape. Although I look very slim dressed, I have quite a big tummy (look approx 5 months pregnant), flabby arse (can live with that) and worst of all, flabby bingo wings. I never, ever wear sleeveless tops or dresses in the summer, even though I would love to.

On top of all that, because I am overall skinny, I am really looking quite drawn and gaunt in my face. (I'm 48). I had some tests recently for gluten and lactose intolerance (still waiting for results) because of ongoing gastro-issues.

Gastro doctor says gastro issues are probably ibs and I should do cardio 3 times a week as stress-relief. I don't actually want to lose weight but I DO want to tone up. In fact, for my face, I would actively like to put on weight. But it seems that fat goes straight to my upper arms!

I'm confused. What do I need to do? I go round in circles in my head - I should cut down on carbs and sweet food to get rid of the flab. I should do cardio for my mental health. But I could do with putting on weight. If I put on weight and try to tone up my arms will they get even bigger?! I don't think I could bear it.

Any advice? Not keen on yoga but would be up for pilates. Really not keen on running but have done it and would do it again if it's the best thing for me. And food?! It's all so confusing.

I would really be grateful for some ideas!

Body Pump! Seriously. A class twice or three times a week will sort you right out!

Find an exercise you enjoy doing (for me it's swimming, walking, badminton and squash, pilates/yoga only if I can find a good instructor). Start in small, manageable chunks that work easily around your life so they become habit.

In your case I would suggest some weight/resistance exercises to increase your muscle mass and some cardio to reduce body fat simultaneously.

Cut down drastically on sugar and alcohol. Increase your 'good' fat intake (avocado, full fat plain greek yoghurt, seeds, nuts & nut butters etc). Eat protein and wholesome carbs to feel full and prevent snacking on junk.

I have exactly the same build as you and I can tell you for sure: You need weights. Forget cardio. You need to lift heavy things with a personal trainer or join a weights class and you'll be like a new woman.

Oh, thank you, all of you! Are these things compatible with putting on weight or is that just daft?

Lapin, have you transformed your shape or have you always worked out?

I was exactly the same as you. 5'5", 49 kg, flabby. Had terrible anxiety and IBS.
Joined a gym and got a personal trainer who was amazing. Within 6 months I was lifting my own body weight and I felt so strong, inside and out.
I weigh more now but my clothes fit the same/better...I'm just much more toned and my posture has improved. Brilliant for anxiety too.
All this is going out the window now as I'm pregnant Wink.

Lapin, that's inspirational! How often do you go to the gym?

I was doing 2 x sessions a week of weights and 1 of yoga. Like I said I'm preggo now so mostly I am lying about sloth-like

Yep. Ideally 3x per week at the highest weights you can manage (without sacrificing technique), but you have to build up slowly.
