Exercise with SPD

I have a 2 month old ds and suffered from SPD during the pregnancy which unfortunately did not go away after the birth. It is not too severe and I can get through the normal day OK mostly but find walking really aggrivates the pain. I am nearly two stone overweight and have lost almost nothing since the birth which is probably due to being quite inactive. I don't want to go on a diet as am breastfeeding so want to start doing some exercise.
I was wondering if there is anyone else out there with SPD trying to loose weight and, if so, what exercise you are doing.

maybe you could contact your hv to ask them to refer you to a physio at your local hospital to help you with gentle exercises to get you moving again? i had a wonderful physio and only suffer occasionally now - my own fault as i work in a job where i on feet for biggest part of the day

Hi Fransmom, how long did it take for your symptoms to lessen? I have seen the physio and started doing exercises on a stability ball specifically for the spd. I'm hoping that this will help. But I want to start doing some cardio exercise as well to burn some calories. I was wondering if anyone used an exercise bike or other equipment sucessfully with spd? I am carrying all the extra weight around my middle and think that this might be a factor in the spd not resolving as I am as heavy now as if I was 6 months pregnant.

first of all you need to get the spd to "calm" down with er rest (!), not aggrevating it, ice packs, ibuprofen etc. I would recommend an osteopath to see if there is anything than can correct that may be aggrevating it they will also advise on exercises. Would anticipate them suggesting swimming due to non weight bearing. But not sure about which leg strokes......

busym4,

i went to see a physio for 11mths, i stillwear a support most days and my ds2 is now just over 2. but i did try to go back to 1/2 marathons v soon after having him and tried to ignore the pain.

best exercise is swimming, but not breast stroke beacause of the leg movements involved.

wear a aupport (even a swimsuit under your clothes can help) and seek out a good osteopath or physio or chiropractor. there is a homeopathic remedy that is meant to help, but havent got round to seeing a homeopath yet.

good luck, dont stress yourself out about doing tons of exercise, build up slowly. also ive heard pilates can be fab.

i'm not sure if it was diagnosed as spd but am getting some pain, i have to wait for my doc to come back off holiday to get a referral i think as i don't trust the other docs in the prac.

Thanks for the replies. Swimming probably would be good but it is hard to get away for that length of time with a new baby to think of. I usually do a lot of walking and really enjoy it. Hopefully the SPD will improve and I can get back to that.
