Obsessing about food & weight - how do I stop?

Hi NotSoLittle, I have so much sympathy for you and so understand everything that you say. I have obsessed over my size/weight for most of my life but it has steadily got worse since the birth of my DS two years ago. I went to my GP not so long ago because this issue has caused my a great deal of anxiety and depression. I had some blood tests done, which all came back clear. I really thought that the results would sink me into a further depression but it seems to have had the opposite effect and has really given my a kick up the butt. Since having DS, I have tried every diet in the book, to no avail. My body just didnt seem to belong to me anymore!! I have reached a stage where I just think well, its down to me to sort this out once and for all. I have found a diet I am enjoying and an exercise DVD which I just love doing and has helped me combat the depression. I have been doing both for two weeks now and although I haven't weighed myself yet (am too scared to) there is a difference in my clothes and even my DH has commented on the saggy bum in my trousers. It was liked I walked up to a brick wall and I had a decision to make, I could either turn around and go back and carry on as I was, or I had to learn how to get over that wall and move forward. I am not sure whether this makes any sense, or whether it will even help you, but from someone who is nearly 4st overweight and obsessed constantly about what I put in my mouth, I feel like the last month has been a real turning point for me.

I can't talk longer as I am just about to finish work and head home and won't be able to log on again untilI start work again tomorrow evening at 5pm, but I will check you out when I come in. In the meantime, I am sending you big hugs x

Hiyya and yes, thanks for the new name (I only wish it were true!) So can I ask, what do your days consist of? I mean that in terms of, do you have children so are at home all day, or do you work fulltime or study?

Me too but I doubt it! DS runs my ragged all day and then I start work at 5pm til 11pm, so don't get home til 11.30pm, bed by midnight and then start all over again..... I wouldn't change anything though for the world! I hope you don't mind me saying though, I don't think you weigh too much! Im 5ft 7in and weigh 14 stone! I shocked my mum a couple of months ago by telling her how I really felt about myself. I feel physically sick when I look in the mirror and have truly never been as big as I am now, apart from when I was pg. I literally used to spend my whole day thinking about food, what I could eat and what I couldn't. I started WW, maybe lost four or five pounds, then gain a couple, but not taking into account my period, or ovulating, things like that, decided that the diet wasn't working, so binged! Think its called a viscious circle?? Then I tried to convinve myself that I had an underactive thyroid so used that as an excuse, until I had my tests a few weeks back and they were clear. I was very relieved and decided, right I have NO excuse anymore, its back to square one or up and over that brick wall......... so far am doing OK. Started the Lo-GI diet and I am truly never hungry and am really enjoying healthy food.

Yes it does, probably more than you realise. I have done the laxative thing and it really won't help you in the long run. I so wish there was something more constructive I could do to help. How old are your DCs? Do you get much exercise with them? What do you do when they are at school and you do not work? I have found a great exercise DVD, it has really helped my combat my stress and depression, although it is quite expensive. I would be more than happy to be your "diet" buddy and we can help and encourage each other.

Not sure if it would help you, but have you tried the Paul McKenna I Can Make You Thin? The principle behind it is very simple and it sort of helped me.

hi notsolittlemiss and overtiredmum. i don't want to butt in but i really felt i had to post here.

i have been doing the yo-yo thing with my weight since i had my dcs (5 yrs since) and have gained over 5 stone in that time. every diet i went on, i did for a few weeks, and like you gave up at the first hint of it not working. i am just far too impatient too wait for my weight losses.

but i have recently started the cambridge diet, and although it is still very early days, i have shed 13 lbs in the first 13 days. it is a pretty radical diet in that you eat no food, only 3 shakes/soups a day and litres of water. but for me it has been a godsend as it has completely taken food out of the equation. there are no decisions to be made about what you can eat and so no guilt about what you are having. the average weightloss is a stone a month so if i do it whole heartedly, i have only 5 mths dieting rather than maybe 18 mths on a slower loss plan.

i am not trying to evangelise, and i know that this kind of regime is certainly not for everyone but it may be worth looking into. it may be all wrong for you but some people have had a lot of success with it.

Thanks Devonshire. I have a friend who is on Cambridge and she looks fab! Not for me though I'm afraid, I love my food too much. Am on Rosemary Conley's Lo-GI at the moment and am finding it great to be honest, although not weighed myself yet as am too scared . I also believe the Cambridge is pretty expensive (?) which isn't for me either at the moment, as money too tight. Glad it is working for you though and hope you lose what you want to.

it is expensive, £32 odd a week, but i for one spend more than that on eating junk, at least a fiver a day on secret binge eating type foods, like posh ice cream and sweets that i eat in secret. can't believe i am admitting that but hey-ho, this is anonymous!

but i agree, its defo not for everyone and your plan sounds really good, like it is the right one for you.

which dvd are you doing btw?

Yeah, my weekly budget for my family of three is 65 quid, so it would cost me alot more than that! The DVD I am doing is called Turbo Jam and it really is great. I discovered it on a Sky TVShop and I only got it cos I thought it looked like good fun. Its a combo of kick-boxing and dancing and is not only good fun, but it has helped me combat depression and really makes me feel good. I have got loads of other DVDs indoors, including Davina and Nell McAndrew and none of them make me feel this good. I have been doing it for three weeks now and I actually look forward to doing it now - even DS joins in!!

Yes, I do the DVD most days to be honest, because it really makes me feel good. It is quite expensive, cost around 40 quid, but thats for five different workouts, and was cheaper than the 75 quid I used to pay for one months membership at my local gym!!! I have been doing the DVD for three weeks and my diet for two weeks and my trousers are so much looser and I generally feel better about myself.

DS is only 20 months so he tends to keep me really busy when I am at home and although I work fulltime as well, its mainly sitting down for six hours, so not much exercise there. I woke up this morning totally knackered and quite moody and had to force myself to do my DVD, but once I had done the warm up, I was fine and was full of energy when I had finished.

How annoying, eh? So frustrating when you have done that and then lost it all.

I have got the Turbo Jam DVD which I do most days. I also got the Paul McKenna book and CD, which makes alot of sense, but I didn't lose any weight on it, but it certainly helped my eating habits. I used to really eat my meals as fast as I could, with a 20 month old, you need to eat when you can and normally as quickly as you can. But it has really helped me in slow my eating down, which really helps.
