Lost muscle instead of fat?

The weight has crept back up for me so I rejoined my gym and started 2 weeks ago. They have one of those boditrax measurement things which scans your body and tells you your weight, broken down in to composition of fat, muscle etc.

I did it last Monday and then yesterday and there is a 2kg difference. Great! Except only 0.6 of it is fat and the other 1.4kg is muscle.

I've googled and it looks like this is because the calorie deficit is too big, I did too much cardio and didn't take on enough protein. Is that right? I need to be doing more weights and not cut as many calories on the days I work out?

For reference, I'm still eating about 1200 calories - 5' 7" and 11.5 stone. Doing spin twice a week, body pump once, Zumba / dance once and yoga once. I need to add in more weights don't I?

Yep...you need to add weights- esp large muscle group weights and get some protein into you right after finishing ( within twenty mins)to help build muscle and lose fat...and have one total rest day for muscle recovering and one moving rest day when you go for a walk/swim/easy cardio

Thanks MadCat. Is body pump sufficient for muscle growth in these early stages / to get technique before moving on to heavier weights in the weights room?

And so is that protein shake for recovery after every workout, inc cardio?

Didn't want to read and run. Yes a shake within 20 mins. Only way to burn fat is have more muscle so add a weights session and maybe up your calories slightly on this day to make sure your body has enough to build!
Good luck!

Oh and yes after cardio too otherwise your body burns muscle to replace the lost energy, hence you losing muscle and fat xx

Thank you penguin, I'll take your advice Flowers

Yep after every session...be careful with body pump..I do weights with a trainer and body pump etc etc...the trainer has broken so many bad habits I had and now I stand in body pump resisting telling the person beside/in front of me 'please don't do it that way you might hurt yourself'.. As good as the body pump teacher is he can't be watching all 30 peoples form in the class at one time and some of the people I watch are doing themselves more harm than good ( just like I did for years)... If you can't get a shake into you then eat a handful of skittles/jellies right after ( I keep them in a pot in my gym bag) class/weights to keep your sugar levels up so your body doesn't eat muscle instead...( it works I have lost 20kg this year, dropped 4 dress sizes and put on muscle )
