Unless you're trying to gain muscle you don't need 60g of protein. Humans don't need nearly as much protein as we've been lead to believe we do.

Are you trying to lose weight, or gain muscle, or is this a way of eating thing?

AuntieStella · 04/12/2016 22:01

None of the above!

I've lost a lot of weight this year and am now happy with my size.

I am still logging on MFP, and on a separate thread about whittling the waist another poster talked about protein (as well as lots of useful stuff about exercise).

So I looked at my protein intake, and for the first time noted how much higher the MFP target is than the NHS advice, which is what led to the thread.

MFP is also, I think, rather low on fibre target.

And I'm on an old, uncluttered version which I don't want to change, but on which I've never found how to alter nutrient settings. So now I've started looking, I keep seeing that I'm usually not terribly close the what MFP gives me. And though I suspect that might not matter, it'd be nice to know a bit more about it.

(yes I know I could just google, but IME there's better advice and comment on MN threads)

I would say even 1g per kg of bodyweight is quite a lot. A lot of Crossfit competitiors I know only eat that much. Unless you are really caning it in the gym and lifting heavy 3/4 times a week plus loads of cardio, I think 1g/kg would be plenty- for you that would be (e.g) 2 eggs for breakfast, chicken breast at lunch, beef chili for dinner and a yoghurt.

That said, I find I do very well on a high protein, lowish fat, medium carb diet so maybe experiement and see how you feel. I do find that higher protein intake minimises sugar cravings/ white carb munchies.

newer research is suggesting 1g per kg of weight for 65 and older.
not sure what it is for younger than 65.
