Hi this a new thread linked to "We want to lose 10lbs NEW THREAD"

I'm a Group exercise instructor/Personal Trainer and have been offering advice to mumsnetters!

Following suggestions that it would be good to start an exercise/nutrition advice/motivation thread - well here it is!!

Wow! Thanks Sweetheart - I'll be hijacking the kids trampoline then

Marls001 · 19/04/2007 16:16

Sweetheart - Was 11 stone in late September! Right after having DS2. Definitely know how it feels to not be weight I want to be, and walk by mirror not recognizing - much less liking - what I see. Everything in my closet was US size 4 I hadn't been able to wear for about a year; was really despairing ever getting there again at that point so joined "We want to lose 10 pounds!" thread!
I'm 5'3". It's not like I diet at all!!! Made sugar cookies yesterday & ate 8 (though not much of anything else healthy ).
But hit the gym every time hard, hard, hard. If my hands aren't shaking when I'm done then I haven't done enough. The voice inside my head re: workouts is relentless. I wanted to add everyone else's voices to it!! But still, definitely not expecting this size to last; just enjoying it right now. Have always been US size 4 and that's where I feel comfortable, so fully expecting to get back up there at some point soon. ... especially the way I eat.

Marls001 · 19/04/2007 16:27

trying to tempt myself with fruit today & nothing bad to make up for yesterday ... Tuesday's workout tried something entirely new, kneeling then keeping body straight from head to knees, leaning body back & holding, then coming up. Did several sets. Had no idea what areas it would effect at the time, just did it to see. Now I know: quads and stomach!! Incredibly sore. Won't be working those muscles today

OrmIrian · 19/04/2007 16:48

Have to say Marls that that would do my back in! I do something similar for yoga but you hold the position rather than moving in and out of it and you hold your ankles for support.

You've lost loads since September!

laloop · 19/04/2007 18:24

Oh dear, diet slipping this week already oops. Have just eaten a creme egg - normally can't have them in the house because I just want to scoff them, but dh was buying up the bargain ones in Tesco...

laloop · 20/04/2007 11:57

Hi all
Just about to head out to TKMaxx to see if they still have any of the Shockabsorber sportsbras in stock.

My legs are still wrecked after Davina's workout yesterday - thighs (both back and front) still feel like lead...ouch
Will probably take it easy today but hoping to go for a 3 mile run tomorrow - got some new running kit (JJB sports were doing half price Lotto gear so got a new running vest and cropped tracksuit pants).

How's everyone else getting on?

sweetheart · 20/04/2007 13:56

well I managed netball last night dispite being achey from my previous gym visits. I'm hoping to get on the cross trainer thing at home tonight but dh wants to use it too so I'll have to jump on as soon as the kids are in bed

Food's going well today too - only had a salad and a cup of tea. I do have a friend coming round in a bit though so I'll have to resist the temtation to eat cake or buiscuits!

I printed off loads of new recipies the other day so I have a week of new meals ahead of me to try which is great. I'm fed up of eating the same boring old thing week after week.

Mars - you have done really well to loose so much weight and dispite the fact I'm really jealous I think your right to enjoy every min of it. Hopefully I'll be joining you soon

laloop · 21/04/2007 11:55

Going out for a run in a bit. Still have achey legs so will have to do some stretching first.

What's everyone else up to this weekend?

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 21/04/2007 12:52

I had a really good run this morning, feel like I' back to where I was before I went away and then hurt my knee.

Day off tomorrow then LONGISH RUN OF 2 MILES ON Mon - long for me anyway. Normally do 1.7miles.

laloop · 21/04/2007 17:40

Hi stripey
Good luck for your 2-miler!

I've been out for my run, had to slow down a couple of times because legs were feeling a bit sore (for those who also have the Power of 3 DVD, is it just me or does that Davina legs section get everyone???)

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 21/04/2007 22:08

I do find its my legs rather than my aerobic fitness that slows me down on runs. I'm trying to do quad strenghning stuff such as step ups and leg raises to help.

laloop · 23/04/2007 11:10

Hi everyone
Hope you all had a nice weekend. Stuck at home this morning catching up with housework/laundry. Thinking of going to the gym once dc's in bed tonight. Will then have time to do a decent workout. Aiming to row for 5 mins (warm-up) then 25 mins run on treadmill followed by 10 mins on crosstrainer. Then swim 1k before relaxing in spa pool!

Need to keep the exercise levels up as I have to do a 3.5 mile relay leg in a fortnight.

sweetheart · 23/04/2007 11:32

Well, started the weekend off well! Weighed on sat morning and had lost 2Ibs. Unfortunalty I pigged out so much over the weekend that I weighed this morning and I've put 2.5Ibs on

I feel like I'm never going to get the last bit of weight off and it's really pissing me off - I watched a programme last night about 2 women trying to get to size 00 and I ctually found myself saying to dh "ohhh I could try that".

Still, I have brought a salad to work for lunch today and plan to visit the gym at lunchtime - back to square one !

speedymama · 23/04/2007 11:34

Hi everyone

On Saturday I did my 4 mile run and knocked another minute of my time so I'm now running it in 45 minutes. So that is 4 minutes faster since I first started running this route in March. My aim is to complete it in 40 minutes eventually. I also plan to move up to 6 miles in a few weeks. I'm seriously thinking about doing a half marathon with DH in the autumn.

This morning I fancied something retro so I worked out to my Totally Body Circuits Step work out video with Keli Roberts. I have not done a step work out for about 2 years and it was quite refreshing but intense.

Laloop, I can concur about the leg work out in Power of 3. Despite all the running I do, when I do the legs workout, I can feel it the next day.

laloop · 23/04/2007 11:37

Sweetheart, my diet willpower is woeful at the minute too. I was on one of the WW threads for a while but it seems to have disappeared. We'll have to keep ourselves motivated somehow...any suggestions??

speedymama · 23/04/2007 11:37

Sweetheart, don't become despondent about the weight. Weight tends to fluctuate during the week and that's why you should only weigh yourself once a week and at the same time. Chances are that when you weigh yourself on Saturday, you may find that you are the same weight or even better, lost some more.

speedymama · 23/04/2007 11:39

I motivate myself by thinking about the clothes that I will wear on holiday.

laloop · 23/04/2007 11:39

Hi speedy, well done with the running - you're doing fantastic

OrmIrian · 23/04/2007 13:11

Well done everyone!

sweetheart - scales are reknowned for the unreliablity, cruelty and habit of telling lies so I wouldn't worry about it. Horrid horid things. Won't have'em in the house Much of what you've gained will be water retention if you've been eating stuff you don't normally especially if it's processed food.

I'm back on my low carb diet as I am feeling so fat and fed up. I vowed I would neer 'diet' again but I didn't count on not being able to do any exercise for this long. I've been eating too much and all the wrong stuff because I was so down. Ankles still sore but getting better.... but I have to be very careful how i move it. I told my karate sensei on Friday and he reckoned I'd probably need another fortnight before I could train again

sweetheart · 23/04/2007 14:31

OI - sorry your ankle still hurts, could you perhaps do some walking until you can get back to your karate?

laloop - I am going on holiday 5 weeks today and I desperatly want to loose another 7Ibs and tone up. That is my main motivation really, plus I'd love to have a tan and look great for the summer.

I have to admit to being slightly obsessed with weighing myself. I get on the scales every morning at the the same time. They are usually fairly accurate and also usually agree with the scales at the gym (yes I pop on those sometimes too ) Perhaps I should get dh to hide them and only allow me on them once a week.

I seem to have such trouble being good at the weekend, especially now the weather is nicer and I want to have a glass of wine in the garden! Still on a positive note it means I feel happy to eat lots of salad.

I have been to the gym today and had a salad and 2 cups of tea so far, oh and a bottle of water - trying to drink lots of water this week in a bid to fill me up a bit more so I eat less.

Well, thanks for picking me up a bit you guys - was feeling more than a little pissed off with myself this morning! I will try really hard not to get back on the scales until Sat

sweetheart · 23/04/2007 14:33

Oh Speedy - well done on the running btw! I can only run for about 20 mins so your doing fab! I'm very jealous

laloop · 23/04/2007 15:07

I have stuck my bathroom scales in a cupboard. They are not allowed out for at least a week .
Do you want to have a weekly weigh-in on this thread, sweetheart? I don't mind which day - 7lbs off would be great for me too. I'm sure it's achievable for us in 5 weeks

Can you tell me more about your low-carb plan, OrMirian - do you find it works well? I am such a cheater on WW, I am forever forgetting to record things (sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose!!)

sweetheart · 23/04/2007 16:10

laloop - yes I know that feeling "if I don't write it down, the calories won't count!!!!"

I am quite good during the week, especially on the days I'm at work. I'm a yo yo dieter though I think, I eat hardly anything Mon-Thur and then binge Fri-Sun. I need to find something to help me be good at the weekends.

Laloop, atm I weigh on a Saturday morning. The reason behind this is so that I can have a "day-off" my diet (which as I've already said seems to spread into Friday and Sunday!!!!!!) I managed to loose quite a bit of weight using this "day-off" strategy as I could have a day where I could eat whatever I wanted too - trouble is now I seem to be taking the piss a bit, I mean did I really have to eat half a desert on Saturday evening that would have fed 8-10 people yes I'm really that bad!

Maybe if we made it mid week I'd be less tempted to be naughty at the weekend, although having said that I'd probably also be in a permanat bad mood without my "day-off" plus I have a big bash this weekend which will definatly involve lots of food and booze!

Right, I'll stop rambling on now and get on with my work!

OrmIrian · 23/04/2007 16:28

laloop - I would gladly tell you about it. People say it's extreme and unhealthy but if it is done properly it isn't. Basically you cut out all starchy and sugary foods - no pasta, rice, bread (all flour in fact), root veg incl potatotes. No sugar. You eat plenty of fresh meat, fish, eggs and some dairy along with veg (mainly leafy green veg) and salad. No fruit to start with (although even Atkins himself made an exception for tomaotes because they are so good for you). No alcohol (well in theory), and if caffeine makes you crave you must cut out coffee and tea. Diet drinks are OK (but not coke) and loads of water (at least 3 litres a day). No milk at all (it's higher in sugar than in fat strangely) but I will admit to a tiny drop in my tea and coffee.

Basically you are getting rid of the sugar that gives you sugar highs and lows, thus removing the tendency for false hunger and cravings. In theory you start burning fat to replace the carbs which are your bodies first port of call for instant energy. This is called ketosis and it's what most critics worry about. I don't know whether the theories stand up but I do know that it's a good way of losing weight without the hunger pangs. I have a weakness for starchy and sugary foods - they are always the things that I struggle with when I'm trying to cut down - so removing them from the equation completely works very well for me.

There was a loooong thread on here about low carb a while back. Worth thinking about if you struggle with low fat/calorie counting diets but it is meant to be a long term thing not just a quick fix.

laloop · 23/04/2007 16:57

Thanks OrMirian
I bought India Knight's diet book recently and am tempted to give it a try, it's low carb and similar to Atkins. My downfall is starchy food too - biscuits, toast, chocolate etc! If I avoid them completely I'm ok but I can't have one biscuit without wanting to eat half a packet.

Weightwatchers is a very good eating plan but I am getting so complacent about it that I'm not really following it properly at all. Feel like I need a change and want to just eat heathily, not count points or calories. Think lowcarb may be worth considering as I don't mind eating lots of veggies with dinner (hopefully won't miss the spuds too much!).

Did you find it easy to get started, I've heard the first few days can be really difficult?

Sweetheart, do you want to weigh on a Tuesday so that will be tomorrow as a start day? Or if you want to keep it to a Saturday I don't mind either way.
