Hi this a new thread linked to "We want to lose 10lbs NEW THREAD"

I'm a Group exercise instructor/Personal Trainer and have been offering advice to mumsnetters!

Following suggestions that it would be good to start an exercise/nutrition advice/motivation thread - well here it is!!

Thanks for the reply Speedymama. Depending on which route I take from about 17 mins to about 25. The 2 routes are the same length but one involves a few small hills, the other is dead flat. I am thinking of extending the flat one a little to involve running up the steps of a railway bridge and then a small hill. I get frustrated because I'm not too tired at the end of it and by the time I finish I feel as if I'm really into my stride but I simply don't have more time. I'm very self-conscious so don't like to run in the evenings when I might have more time and also I feel safer in the am than I would do at night in our area. I used to run 5k every time at the gym on the treadmill - a real eye-opener to see how much harder running outside is!

speedymama · 12/03/2007 14:49

Ditto the difference between treadmill and outdoors. I guess the steep hill in the middle is what really slows me down so it would be interesting to see how fast I can run 2 miles on the flat.

I'm self-concious about running too so I prefer early mornings. In fact, I prefer to exercise as soon as I get up because I get it out the way and I feel energised for the day.

Once I feel comfortable with this run, I plan to extend it to 3 miles and would like to do this regularly 2 to 3 times a week.

laloop · 12/03/2007 15:12

Very interesting and motivating to read all your running stories . We live on a really steep hill (which runs off from another steep hill) - great views from our house but not conducive to running . I have only ever attempted to run a circuit near here once and I swear it nearly finished me off . But reading this makes me wonder should I give it a try again! I normally do my 5k run completely on the flat as I use the towpath of a nearby river (think it takes me around 25 mins).

I am dreading my weigh-in at WW this week. I had wine at the weekend, was out for dinner and baked a chocolate cake with the dc's yesterday which I have just helped to polish off. Oh help!!!!

laloop · 12/03/2007 15:12

Soory, meant to add a welcome to OrmIrian and prettyfly

prettyfly1 · 12/03/2007 15:33

hi everyone - i really enjoy nell mcandrews ultimate workout and carmen electras fit to strip is actually very good. i will consider running of a lunchtime definately. i must say you all seem really motivated. defo the right place for me i think!

speedymama · 12/03/2007 15:49

Same here Laloop. In this months issue of Weightwatchers magazine, I made their cherry rock cake. Delicious and only 2 points per portion. Trouble is, I kept going back for more.

laloop · 12/03/2007 15:56

At least you used a WW recipe, speedymama! I just made my usual choccy cake recipe, with choc buttercream and choc buttons on top (wouldn't even know how to start to point it ). Think I'm going to look into the Core plan (NoCount) for next week so I will only be able to eat healthy food and won't be tempted to bake so much.

prettyfly1 · 12/03/2007 16:05

laloop you could try what i do i am on the 6 day diet which means very low calories for 6 days then on sunday eat what you want ( obviously not everything in sight). It works for me cause i love baking and i can look forward to still being able to do some at the weekend.

yellowpoo · 12/03/2007 16:07

Also need advice on running routine. Am running for forty five minutes once a week and walking (at pace) for thirty minutes, daily with buggy and dog. Doing a muscle toning programme three times a week and cutting out snacks.

Started in january and have lost one stone. Need to lose one more to return to pre preganancy weight. DS is 10 months now, but have had no further weight loss for almost a month, despite being very good, feeling demotivated. Anyone know why nothing happening? Need two days to recover from run and always a bit stiff in the legs the morning following walks.

speedymama · 12/03/2007 16:26

Yellowpoo, this is my personal experience.
When I exercise, I don't lose weight.
When I diet, I lose weight.
When I exercise and diet, I lose even more weight.

The simple fact is that if you consume more calories than you use, then you will not lose weight. Obviously, as you reach your optimium weight, further loss becomes more difficult unless you drastically reduce your calorie intake.

Try writing down everything that you eat and you may surprise yourself by how much you are actually eating.

Also, sometimes, one loses inches as oppose to weight so check how your clothes are fitting too.

Also, for the muscle toning use weights that challenge your muscle but allow you to complete 15 reps. If you can only do 8 to 10 reps, chances are you are building your muscles rather than toning them up.

HTH

speedymama · 12/03/2007 16:27

Also, do more stretching after running to stop yourself from ceasing up

laloop · 12/03/2007 16:45

I like the sound of the 6 day diet, prettyfly, but have committed myself at WW as I am going along with a friend, so will have to stick with the points for another while yet!

Yellowpoo, 45 minute run - very impressed! I haven't done more than 30 mins in one session yet. Re : losing weight - I would also suggest what speedy says i.e. writing down everything that you eat for a couple of days - I did this a few weeks ago and couldn't believe the amount I was consuming without realising. Was very enlightening - no wonder my weight was creeping up rather than down . As a result I started WeightWatchers a couple of weeks ago to try to shift a stone for summer.

PeckaRolloverAgain · 12/03/2007 16:47

When is the weight watchers magazine out?

Also Im not going to meetings atm but Im a gold member from a while ago.

Am I allowed to go into the meetings to buy things from their stall?

speedymama · 12/03/2007 16:54

I bought mine last week from the newsagent.

laloop · 12/03/2007 16:55

Pecka, I'm pretty sure you could pop into a meeting during weigh-in time and buy from the stall - the leader's most likely on commission for selling it so hopefully they wouldn't mind.

Very envious of your gold membership - I've always got within a pound or two of my goal weight and then given up!!

CODalmighty · 12/03/2007 16:55

laloop · 12/03/2007 17:00

I'd say you'll notice an improvement in your general fitness/stamina within a few weeks, Cod. Don't know if you're looking to lose weight as well, but I find that I need to watch what I eat as well to get a weight loss.

Are you enjoying the gym? Lorns, who posts on here is a qualified personal trainer - she always has loads of good advice.

Bubble99 · 12/03/2007 20:04

Oooh! Can I join you?

I need to do something about my general fitness and my big tummy.

I'd love to run each day but how do you start? I haven't run properly for years.

< I get the 'put one foot in front of the other' bit, BTW.>

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 12/03/2007 21:20

Bubble you need to get a running programme that builds you up from scratch. Check out the runnersworld website as I think they have one there.

You basicly need to run 3x a week minimum. And for the first week do something like run 1 min, walk 1min and repeat x10.

Then the next week run 2 mins, walk 1 min and repeat x7.

That sort of thing.
