I have seen good articles on the new book by India Knight, will try and link

Starts off a bit Atkins, low carb etc but she did it with children and family in mind so you are not sat there eating Ryvita on your own

cut down on dairy - even stop having milk in your tea

cut down on meat

cut down on bread/flour products (or cut out altogether ideally)

exercise with a heart rate monitor - to lose weight you must be running a hr of about 170 (if you are aged 30-35) and exercise 3-4 times a week

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 06/02/2007 15:15

count calories. but do it religiously.

cut down on carbs.

Eat protein during the day where possible, and any carbs, eg pasta/rice/potato at night.

if you eat cerial for breakfast replace it with protein i.e. egg/turkey rashers (less fat than bacon althouh you can pick the fat off of bacon - I do, lol). if Carbs are burned quicker so if you eat those for breakfast you'll be hungry again by 10 and then you'll have more need to snack.

eat healthy lunch - meat/tuna with a bit of salad. (100 g of leafy salad such as tesco crispy salad only contains 20 cals so that's perfect).

weigh everything you eat because you may think you're having a small portion, but unless you weigh it you can't be sure just exactly how many calories it contains.

I use

this site
to help me calculate how many calories I'm eating, and I've lost a stone now.

oliveoil · 06/02/2007 15:17

article here, doesn't have recipes but you could search

Bovvy · 06/02/2007 15:17

You know Mandymoo I am the same as you but I have tried every bloody diet club going and they are all the same. As long as you follow their regime and continue going to their classes your okay but as soon as you stop, you put all your weight back on and more (well I did anyway).

I have come to the conclusion (and this is my own opinion).... lol, why change the way you eat? You enjoy what you eat obviously or you wouldn't be eating it.

This is what I am doing. I am not cutting out my fav foods just cutting down. I tried to include more veg and fruit and water. I have also bought a pedometer thingy's (i think thats what they are called!!) and it is amazing how many steps you do a day, that makes me feel more confident that I am exercising!

I am losing weight - slowly I must admit but at least it is better than nothing and I am still enjoy eating what I like.

Good luck!

In order to permanently lose weight you have to change the way you eat for the rest of your life. It?s no use signing up to x and y class and following their regime to the letter and then when you?ve lost what you want to lose you go back to eating how you used to. It stands to reason that you?ll just regain the weight you?ve worked so hard to lose then, and that?s when dieting becomes disheartening.

If you want to permanently lose weight you need to change the relationship you have with food. I don?t believe that you need to necessarily cut anything out of your diet, I do think that when you?re losing weight you need to seriously cut back on the things that make you gain/retain weight, but if you see certain foods as forbidden you?ll just want them more and are more likely to go back to stuffing your face with them once you?ve lost a load of weight.

Since I?ve been dieting I?ve totally changed the way I look at food. A bar of chocolate (100 grams) for instance contains nearly half the calories I need to lose 2 lb a week (500 calories). If I eat that chocolate I?ve eaten the equivalent of a whole meal, and IMO that?s a total waste. That bar of chocolate won?t fill me up, yes it?ll give me a temporary high but I?ll still be hungry and will still have to eat dinner. So I try to eat firstand if I haven?t eaten all my allowance then I can have something nice after dinner. I still drink sugar in my tea because I can?t bring myself to use sweeteners, they?re vile.

And I believe that even once I?ve lost the weight I want to lose, that my view of food has changed significantly. Firstly I?ve been eating smaller portions so the amount I can actually eat has decreased now, and secondly, I do think about what it is I am eating, not to the extent I?m precious about it, but having worked this hard to get to where I am I?m not about to throw it all away.

nailpolish · 06/02/2007 15:49

i agree

you have to be very blase about food - "oh well ill go make breakfast/lunch/tea"

and not think about it between those times

and you have to think "would i rather have slender hips or that cream cake/poke of chips/extra biscuit"

etc

sweetheart · 06/02/2007 16:01

I've slimmed down over the last 14 months (since having ds) it takes alot of will power and determination. I've tried several times before and haven't been in the right frame of mind to be successful but this time I've cracked it!

My main tips would be
Schedule your excercise so it becomes part of your routine - write it in your diary if you have to and make sure you stick to it.

Write down everything you eat, that way you will think twice before sneeking a biscuit and then forgetting about it later.

Try not to diet - try to change your eating habbits so you are making healthy choices. It doesn't have to be rocket science - everyone knows that fruit is better than a packet of crisps!

Eat when your hungry - when your bored find something to do. Try and remember that a craving only lasts for something like 7 mins so make yourself busy and it should go away.

There is more, I could go on and on. I still want to loose another 7 Ibs but I think I have reached my healthy weight as I can't seem to shift anymore. I have been using ww as a guidline and it's done well for me - but I have been using the old system not this new no count thing which I think is rubbish!

I hope this helps a bit - I'm sure I'll think of other things to say!

sweetheart · 06/02/2007 16:06

ohh hI like alot of what WannaBe said - I have the same attitude now. Earlier today I was walking along the road thinking about buying cakes for everyone in the office but then I relised that eating one cream cake just wasn't worth the extra Ib's. When I was large I used to buy the cakes for the office at least twice a week! I'm shocked now that I used to eat like that.

I still enjoy my food - I just make better choices

mandymoo · 06/02/2007 16:16

great advice ladies - thanks!

WBWEIWB - how would you rate the website out of 10? And can i just start calorie counting tomorrow - or do i have to research stuff first

im doing well on th e atkins approach. its a total rethink f o how you eaat. and its for life.. and once the first few days are past, surprisinvly easy.

sweetheart · 06/02/2007 21:06

anything can be low calorie if you make it from scratch yourself. I have lost my weight eating family evening meals like Spagetti Bolognaise, Curry, Chilli etc etc You can also reduce the calories by reducing your portions.

How long to loose a stone - ummmm well I have lost about 3 stone in 14 months - some was post pregnancy so dropped off quickly. I'd say your looking at about 3 months to get a stone off.

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 06/02/2007 21:06

I would rate the site very highly, esp the calory counting/exercise cals bit. plus they have a recipe feature where you can search for and input your own recipes using the ingredients in the database so it calculates exactly how many calories there are in each serving of your recipe.

I lost my first 10 lb in 6 weeks. but I did include exercise in that - went on the cross trainer twice a week and swimming twice - although didn't exercise religiously every week. After that I had a slack period when I went on holiday etc and then went back on the diet and lost the couple of lb I had gained following my "lapse" and the other 4 lb.

sweetheart · 06/02/2007 21:14

a healthy and sustainable weight loss is supposed to be 1 or 2 Ibs a week - obviously there will be weeks when you loose more like the first week you loose alot of water and around periods etc etc

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 06/02/2007 21:21

I wouldn't do atkins, it's ve contravercial have a look

here
that'll give some info if you were interested, including the lawsuit being undertaken by a man claiming atkins was responsible for his heart defect, and the fact that due to decreasing popularity, the atkins corporation has now actually become bankrupt. Says a lot IMO

sweetheart · 06/02/2007 21:28

My boss did aitkins and ended up in hospital - problems with his lower intestine. He did loose lots of weight but as soon as he came off the diet he pilled it back on again because it is not sustainable for a long period of time and is dangerous.

I also knew a woman who did aikens and it affected her monthly cycle - she ended up with an unwanted pregnancy.

mandymoo · 07/02/2007 09:26

sweetheart - i love spag bol, chilli and curry and would love to still be able to eat them whilst losing weight! Could you please give me any recipes you may have! I would really appreciate it

Def going to give this calorie counting thing a go. Tbh, the Atkins idea scares me. I know it works for a lot of people but i want something more sustainable and tbh my idea of a healthy diet includes fruit and veg!
