Should I buy a FitBit?

I really want one but have no idea why...Grin I don't know that I would walk any more or less if I had one - I already have to walk the dog every day which entails a solid hour of fast paced walking which is around 5.5k - 6k. on a school day, less when I have children in tow. Then I do exercise too. My sister has one but not even sure why she has one either! Just feels like everyone has one!

Wow - those of you who have one are definitely fans of them! I am on a real mission right now - I am not grossly overweight but last year I turned 50 and I had been to a boot camp 6 week transformation programs - went down o 8 stone 6 and felt better than I had ever felt before. I usually hover around 8 stone 10-13 and if I see the scales hit the 9 stone mark them I reign myself in without too many problems. However, this year I can't seem to get below 9 stone at all! It is driving me bonkers as I am not very tall (5'3") so the extra weight really shows on me as I am quite small framed (athletic build). Given all that, do you think a fitbit would give me the nudge I need! I also signed up for Joe Wicks 90 days thing .

They really are great for motivation. I started paying a lot more attention to how many calories I was eating when my Fitbit started telling me how many I was burning, & there's a real satisfaction in hitting each of the daily targets.

Is it best to order from any particular vendor?

I just got 2 of mine from Amazon. First one was faulty so FitBit replaced it, I was so surprised how willing and fast they were. Just went on their online chat to try and fix the problem and in about 5 minutes they'd offered to replace it! The second one was lost so ended up buying a new one after months of searching. Then of course, after I'd received my new one, DH found the 2nd one! So now he has that one and we compete Grin

Use a "ordinary" (whoo, 21st century! We may not have the hoverboards Back to the Future promised, but we have miniscule computers and augmented reality games!) smartphone and download Pokemon Go. Wink

Much cheaper. You should see how much more I've jogged and walked since July!

Myself and DH have them. Mainly because we both work at the same place and have access to the same health insurance that means a certain number of steps gets up free cinema tickets and free Starbucks on a weekly basis.
Certainly it makes me go for that last thousand steps instead of slumping on the sofa and the heart rate monitor was a shock to the system and an eye opener in terms of how unhealthy I was!
I still find it entertaining that watching the walking dead has my heart rate so high that I'm in fat burner mode though!

You are all fitbit fans - they must be good! Are they fiddly to programme with your details or whatever?

I have the charge HR. Also find it so motivating to get my steps and active minutes.

Also surprised how little calories I burn on an inactive day. Makes me more mindful of what I'm eating/doing- I lost 3 stone last year and have kept it all off. A lot of that is due to the Fitbit motivating me I think.

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 16/09/2016 07:53

They aren't fiddly at all. You download the app to your phone, it guides you through initial set up where you enter your details, takes about 10 mins.
When you open the app to look at your daily statistics it then syncs the wristband to your app so you can see your data. Very easy to use and I'm no computer geek. Everything turns green on the app when you've met your daily goals which gives me a weird sense of achievement!

StirredNotShaken · 16/09/2016 07:55

NiceCuppa That's hilarious! So if I sat indoors and had horror movie fest I could easily burn calories without having to do anything :-D

Testarossa1 · 16/09/2016 11:29

I received my Fitbit Alta last night. Lovely plum strap. Easy to set up, and accurately recorded my sleep last night. Can't stop playing with it this morning! 3296 steps so far. 859 calories burnt. Clever stuff!

StirredNotShaken · 16/09/2016 11:52

Ordered - cannot wait for it to arrive now!

I have a Jawbone UP because at the time it was the cheapest thing in the Amazon Warehouse. I didn't know whether I'd use it so didn't want to spend the money. Trying to maintain my weekly average steps does make me get up and out. There are a few sites that will link with your device and let you use your steps on walks, I have just started walking round Iceland after my 1m steps around the Rocky Mountains.

worldwalking.org is one site, there are others.

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 16/09/2016 20:30

Met my daily goals today! For anyone interested this is what the app looks like on your phone with all your daily data on.

Love my Fitbit. Doing Steptember. 10000 steps each day in September with my Fitbit. Highly recommend it

StirredNotShaken · 20/09/2016 22:39

I cannot wait for mine to arrive now! I ordered the Phase 2 (I think that is what it is called) . I do think it will benefit me.
