Weight loss without moving - is it possible?

I need to lose about half a stone to ten pounds, but unfortunately I cannot exercise. Is this possible? I can't even walk or swim. I could maybe do some upper body exercises with weights, but that is all and that won't make much difference.

Yes. Just cut your food intake and limit fatty sugary foods. Will be slower if you're not mobile, but possible. Good luck.

Yes weight loss is 80% what you eat , I don't exercise I've lost a stone and a bit recently on slimming world

Floppityflop · 22/05/2016 09:14

Thanks. I am just wondering how slow it will be! Even a lot of people who say they don't exercise do some walking which definitely helps a bit. I guess a slow loss is better than no loss... (New slimming motto!)

Yes definitely. Try cutting out carbs, that seriously worked for me, but as a vegetarian I found it really hard to maintain! Otherwise just reducing sugar and fatty foods, swapping crisps for carrot sticks etc little changes all add up for sure.

I lost 28lb doing 5:2 and the only exercise I did was pushing buggy up and down the hills where I live.

Toomuch2young · 22/05/2016 09:36

And forgot to say if you can move your arms then may be loads of exercises you can do, I had many aerobic exercises I could do from my chair, if these would be suitable for you let me know. It all helps and certainly does make a difference Grin

Floppityflop · 22/05/2016 10:46

I could do some aerobic exercise seated in a week or two, so if you have any good exercises, I'd be interested. The Internet has lots of videos of people doing exercises which say they are okay when you are not supposed to be doing anything with lower body, but don't look okay to me! This is not a permanent state of affairs for me (immobilisation) but I don't want to create more problems for myself during recovery by gaining weight and could do with losing some before this happened. I can also feel phlegm settling on my chest through lack of movement which is not nice!

Ahh well I wouldn't recommend anything to physical then unless you have run it past your consultant, don't want to be doing more harm than good!

Some of what I was thinking of then probably won't be suitable (horse riding and wheel chair sports are probably no go!) however I would definitely recommend Pilates/ yoga if you can find and instructor accommodating of your needs. The difference this makes to strength, flexibility and posture is amazing and is (can be) low impact.
For more cardio based activities would you be able to do arm rowing machines? Or failing that simulating the motion in the air, it's a good way to get your heart rate up. As is boxing. But it really depends on what your situation is. Don't be despondent though it sounds like it's only short term and anyway it's perfectly possible to lose weight and be fit without going for a walk Grin

Ifiwasabadger · 22/05/2016 19:57

Totally! I don't exercise much but eat little and am thin.

thenightsky · 22/05/2016 20:07

Totally do-able.

I lost 28lb low carbing whilst having so many injuries I could barely move.

Floppityflop · 22/05/2016 21:42

Oh goodness, definitely no horse riding as I'm petrified of horses! I might try boxing with my DH (and rowing a bit later on). We have some pads and gloves, just need not to hit him by mistake! I know it's only short term for me. It's made me realise how much I take for granted normally and how bloody difficult and exhausting just getting around can be. This probably sounds really stupid, but I had never really thought about it too much before.

I will stick with my healthy eating plans too.

Maybe have a look at Kundalini yoga and adapt some of it (disclaimer - I know nothing about it but once went to a session where you (eg) held your arms in the air and moved them in small movements repeatedly side to side. It sounds easy and it is at first but they make you do it for what seems like forever (probably about 5 or 10 minutes) and it becomes very very very hard. It was honestly awful and I am very fit but would never go back. If you did this kind of think a lot you would burn fat.

But the point I was making was look into small repetitive movements you can manage while seated and see how long you can keep going.

*thing

msrisotto · 12/06/2016 15:20

Hi OP. I had a personal trainer once who told me that what you look like is at least 80% diet and at most 20% exercise so i'd be very optimistic about your ability to lose weight without changing much about how you move. I gave up added sugar and that made a difference.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 12/06/2016 15:24

I've lost 2 stone in 5 months and not exercised on WW. However I have now started to walk for at least an hour daily after work and am in the first week of C25K. Because I know the last half stone and keeping it all off will be harder if I don't move.
