Female Score 3
Age ???
(21-35 = 4) (36-50 = 3)
Stones 18 = 18
Tall > 5'4" = 2
Exercise in average daily life (score 0 -6 depending how active you are - BE HONEST)

Lose/maintain weight? Score 0 to lose

Does that help?

Finding this out - even with WW mag - will not help her unless she knows what foods are counted for points and which aren't.

If she needs some encouragement there is good WW thread oging at the moment (says she who cannot type!)

LadyOfTheFlowers · 13/01/2007 00:50

she is 23 andnot active at all really.
walks to the shop about 3 times a week at most.

So

3 + 4 + 18 + 2 + 0 + 0

27 points (assuming shop is a short gentle stroll away)

It will be tough but if she ups her water, fruit and veg intake and sticks to her points she will prob drop almost half a stone in the first week.

Thereafter her weight loss will be around 1-2lbs per week if she sticks to the regime.

Great thing about WW IMO is you can eat what you like as long as you count it. Have that eclair but eat veg soup for supper. Scoff the biscuit and forfeit the wine. Choose crudites and salsa over chips and creamy dips.

But... IMO again - losing weight can take emotional energy and you need to be in the right frame of mind to achieve it. Believe you can do it and you will. It sounds like she is on a winning streak as she has refused pills from the doctor. It takes guts to face up to things and if she can, I am sure she will be rewarded with better health at the very least!!!!

Ooops osrry! Did I get a bit evangelical?!

LadyOfTheFlowers · 13/01/2007 01:13

no no thats very nice of you, and the substitute bits you put are good as i can tell her tomorrow that yes she CAN eat a cakeif she wants but then sheneeds to be careful.
i have bought a points machine off ebay for her too. hopefully that will make it tons easier no?
also, if she lost that much in the first week, possibly, why does it slow down so drastically the next week? i thought very big people lost weight quickly for quite a while before they plateaued?

I think a lot of the initial weight loss is stored water. By upping intake of water through increased fruit and veg and drinking more, your body ditches all the water it's been hanging onto. This may be obvious water e.g. bloating round ankles, knees or may be on the tummy area.

I read somewhere recently too that the extra fluid helps the liver to function better too. Or was it that the liver can function better because it's not being overloaded with fatty foods.

I think the 'big people lose weight more quickly' thing is what probably leads a lot of people to fail. They have one huge weight loss then they only drop 1-2lbs a week and lose heart.

Plateaus don't have to happen. They are a result of not taking into account your changing body or slipping back into old ways or trying to overdo it.

E.g. if you cut right down on your food, your body will go into starvation mode and hang onto weight for the 'famine' - hence never going below 14 points.

As you lose weight i.e. every time you go below a stone level, your body needs less food so you have to drop a point.

If you take up exercise your body will become more efficient so you need to gradually increase the amount of exercise. This might happen naturally e.g. if you set aside 20 mins to walk you will find you are walking further or if you walk a route you can do it in less time. So to continue to lose weight, increase the exercise time or distance.

Most fitness regimes don't recommend increasing by more than 10% at a time because the body will just get too tired and you will overdo it one day and then muscle fatigue will mean you don't do anything for the next few days!! There are useful training timetables online for things like the Breast Cancer Moonwalk . It doesn't mean your SIL has to enter, it just gives some idea of a sensible programme.

She could do lightlife or similar to lose the weight quickly but then she will still have to learn the good habits for the future to keep the weight off.

Anyway, after all that - I hope she goes for it. Like your SIL I am 5' 9". In early Oct I weighed 16st 11lb. I have now lost 24lbs, dropped almost two dress sizes from 20-22 to 16-18 and feel so much better. Even little things like getting in and out of the car, off the sofa, squatting down to pick something up have got easier. I've been here before - lost 5.5 stone last time and put it back on. This time it's for keeps, as it's my 40th birthday in November and I am determined not to be Fat and Forty!

LadyOfTheFlowers · 13/01/2007 14:09

well done you on your weight loss!

what is 'lightlife' sorry if i am being dim.
and to clarify, each time she loses a stone she drops a point? so in a month or so, she would have 26 points per day?

OP posts:
SueW · 13/01/2007 15:13

Lighterlife is one of the meal replacement programmes. Costs an arm and a leg and includes group therapy/counselling sessions. I know people who have done it very successfully but then they have to re-introduced to fod (you don't eat any normal food at all as far as I know)

And yes, once she is 17 stone something, she will have to drop a point to 26. And when she is 16 stone something, another, etc

LadyOfTheFlowers · 13/01/2007 19:02

thnaks for all your help. we are going to see her tomorrow so i will print this out to show her.
