New Slimming World group is opening in my village (miracle!) and I'm thinking of joining. What do you think of it?

Not done it myself but there are a few SW threads full of people who have done well on it. have a look on the weight loss board.

Tommy · 01/01/2007 22:35

I did very well with SW last year. I find it a very healthy way of losing weight and (this was important to me!) didn't have to feel hungry at all.

My sister lost five and a half stone with SW - really an achievment. I would reccommend it (Ihave done WW in the past too but prefer SW)

Good luck

Sparkler1 · 01/01/2007 22:39

Very very good weight loss plan. I have done it twice - first time lost nearly two stone and the second just under a stone. It's more of a healthy way of eating than a "diet" and it is a way of changing the way you eat for life.
I must admit I stopped going a few months back as I just didn't have the time to concentrate on it properly and am wondering if I should go back again. I know how it all works but I just don't think I have the willpower to go it alone.
Give it a try - you have nothing to lose.
Good luck!

ledodgy · 01/01/2007 22:41

It's brilliant I find it the best diet i've ever done in so much it doesn't feel like a diet and you never go hungry. I started on 29th August and have lost half a pound off three stone now (although after this week I've probably put on!).

christmascarol3 · 01/01/2007 22:42

I lost 4 and half stone with slimming world would recomend it. The class is only as good as the leader though so if the new one is good should get on fine. Really helped me going to class each week as it made me focus on weight loss for week ahead.

Frostythesurfmum · 01/01/2007 22:49

I lost 2 stones on it. I agree it isn't a diet, you can eat loads it just all really healthy stuff. I haven't felt so good in years. Going to the group really helps as well. There's no way I could have stuck to it if I had been trying to lose weight on my own.

Another recommendation from the surfer household [smile}.

MamaG · 02/01/2007 11:58

oh great, thanks - I've never tried anything like this before (although I should have!) and thought I should see what MN thought...i think that having the support of a weekly session will really help me.

First session tomorrow night - do they read your weight out to the whole room?

Its a long time since I went to SW (lost 2 stone 6 years ago).No they dont tell anyone your actual weight but do say if you have lost or put on weight that week. It is good for the support.
Am thinking about what I should do as I now as I need to lose more. Want to be fit for my 12month old ds. Have got married since last diet. Any help with how to do this with a DH and DS in tow.

thanks

I've lost a stone so far.. and recommend it!
Eat more than ever before and losing quite nicely (well until Xmas came along and took some time off
Like Tommy also says, I find it a healthy way to lose weight and am really pleased I decided to take those steps into my first class!

BadHair · 02/01/2007 15:59

I did SW 18 months ago and although I lost a stone, I was really put off by the recipes they suggested. They all seemed to use convenience foods, particularly Muller yoghurts and Frylite spray oil, and lots of desserts with artficial sweeteners in. Portions were huge and when I didn't lose weight one week I was told it was probably because I hadn't eaten ENOUGH!

I left after 2 months. I felt that although they did promote fresh fruit and veg to a small extent, there was a hidden agenda which encouraged reliance on a narrow range of branded convenience foods. My friend went to a different SW club in a different part of the country, and she felt the same way and left too.

We both actually lost more weight by just staying off the biscuits, eating smaller portions of good, home-cooked food, and walking more.

But on a positive note, if you get a good group the support can be good, I suppose.

MamaG · 02/01/2007 21:18

well I've decided to give it a whirl. First night tomorrow. Thanks for the advice

Interesting what badhair has to say.
That has not been my experience at all!
Most members I have met have some own great homemade ideas which they have happily shared if asked.
Since I started I have met 3 consultants, each one very different but good, but will say the one I have liked the most is actually the team manager/district manager type person, so is very upbeat and great at boosting people!!
Hope tomorrow goes ok MamaG - will say I found it a bit odd/uncomfortable initially to see so much clapping going on.. felt very alien to me.. but now I am sucked in and really think it's fab when people meet their goals etc!

MamaG · 02/01/2007 21:30

clapping?

I'm not American you know!

I know, I know, sounds scary.. maybe it's just where I live that does this?

ditzyangeluk · 03/01/2007 07:35

Slimming World IS probably the best one out there. And it's true, the more you eat (of the right stuff!) the more you lose!

SUGGESTION: Go along to your doctors & see if you can get on the Slimming World Voucher Scheme. You get 12 Classes for free

McDreamy · 03/01/2007 08:03

I've done WW and SW. Personally I prefer and was more successful with WW but I think that was sown to the leaders rather than the diets themselves.

The only thing I really didn't like about the SW classes was going through everyones weight loss week on week on week - didn't provide me with much motivation and became very boring but as I said I think that was down to the leader and the way it was done - so I gave up, hence losing more weight on WW (WW not available where I live now).

But good for you - you should go and try it out. I was surpised to read Badhairs comments as the one thing my leader did say was that if you were prepared to cook a little for yourself then the more successful you would be and I would have to agree with that. In some ways I think it is probably WW that rely more on convenience foods as they have their own range in the supermarkets. Buy a couple of recipe books and the magazines are really good for ideas too. Good luck

MamaG · 03/01/2007 10:26

I didn't know about the voucher scheme, thanks for htat, I'll go along and see if I can get some

Hiya ive done all the majoy slimming clubs and have found sw the easiest to follow, as i dont like pointing or weighing, with sw its dead asey just normal foods, I dont know about conveince foods as said in the posts, the consultant i go to talks more about fresh free foods rather than shop stuff. I asked one week how does it work and basically it comes down to eating very low calorie foods that fill you up for longer, at firts didnt beleive it worked, but have lost 3 stone and never hungry and have to say, i do it without thinking now, and still go to class every week, my consultant makes it really fun, you never short of ideas...
