How to lose weight after 35 without losing your face?

I posted on another forum earlier about low fat diets and how I think they are bad for your skin, make you look older etc it is just a theory but I am really interested. I am 38 and have about 50lbs to lose. I do want to lose some fat from my face but I want to do what I can to keep my skin nice and help it snap back even if it takes longer.

What are your idea's and tips for losing weight without the arse falling out your face and skin?

I'm losing vanity weight at the moment and I'm 42. I've religiously been taking high strength fish oil and starflower oil and eating a tablespoon of coconut oil a day. Don't know if it's due to them but my facial skin looks good despite losing fat. Wrinkly post- pregnancy belly skin is another matter!

anotherdayanothersquabble · 30/06/2015 08:13

I understand the skin thing and thing that answer is coconut oil and meat stock. I have gone from over 10 stone to just over 9, I am still a 12/14 just less bulgy but more people have commented on my skin than on my weight loss!!

I don't eat grains, dairy or sugar (loosely Paleo diet) so lots of seeds, vegetables, dates as a sugar substitute. I put coconut oil in rice at least twice a week and use it in snacks / cake substitutes. I use homemade chicken stock in several meals a week and the collagen content of gelatin is reputed to be beneficial to skin, bones and muscles.

I no longer get the dry itchy skin I used to get when I was starving my body to diet.

I had to laugh klarabelle. It's exactly the sort of comment I would use but then we do call a spade a spade.

When I lose weight I wish I wouldn't lose it off my face but I do. It's also part of the ageing process. I have quite a bony face to start with so I like to hang onto the fat there. Oh if we could only choose.

Someone I noticed , a celebrity, who lost a lot of weight and it really showed was Hannah Waterman. So I can see where you are coming from. Lose it gradually rather than quickly , keep up the nuts and good fats and you might minimise the damage but at some point ageing is inevitable.

I used to weigh about 9 st 3 in my 20s. I would look dreadful at my age and height 5'6" and 63. I don't know what I weigh but am a size 14 or a 12 in vanity sizing.

7-10 lbs off belly and bum would be great...please!

I'm getting married in 10 weeks. My dress fits but a bit off the b and b would be great.

Well done on your weight losses ladies.

Dowser · 30/06/2015 09:54

I am reading a book by JJ Virgin and she claims that if you cut 7 inflammatory foods (dairy, gluten, sugar, corn, soy, peanuts and eggs) from your diet you will lose weight but also look younger, not sure if it is true but whenever I try paleo style eating I do look a bit better. I guess its along the lines of perricone too.

yumyumpoppycat · 30/06/2015 13:57

The other thing is for some people (me!) your face will slim down first then your body catches up so it is hard to reach the point where your body is slim but your face hasn't slipped into gaunt. One advantage with cutting those kind of foods is that if you are intolerant to any of them you will lose bloating/ water weight before fat which will be instantly slimming on the tummy.

Milllii · 30/06/2015 19:51

I don't think that there is anything wrong with eating naturally low fat ie. fruit, salad, all veg, poultry, meat and fish. Low fat has got bad press because of all the processed rubbish. Eat fresh and natural and it will be relatively low fat . I don't feel that adding lots of extra fat and oils to your diet is always a good thing either.

Postino · 30/06/2015 20:02

Another one on a paleo-ish diet, I eat plenty of coconut oil, avocados, butter (yes I know it's dairy!). I'm losing weight and my skin looks better than it ever has, really glowy. I'm nearly 40.

Milllii · 30/06/2015 20:49

Post my skin is good too but think its to do with the huge amount of fruit and veg I eat more than anything else.

anotherdayanothersquabble · 30/06/2015 22:13

Typical day:
Eggs with vegetables, salmon or chicken for breakfast
Occasionally muesli or bread

Lunch is whatever is left in the fridge

Dinner: rice, potatoes, lots of vegetables, meat, fish or chicken.

Snacks: raw vegetables, fruit, date and coconut balls, sweet potato brownies with dates instead of maple syrup.

I eat a lot!!

And I think adding in fats is in fact a good idea on many levels. The right levels of fatty acids are important to many functions in the body including cell regeneration, mental functions, joint health, immune function.

Dowser · 01/07/2015 08:15

Can we have the recipe for sweet potato brownies please.
I eat similar to you.

I maybe lose an ounce or so and then stall.

I'm not supposed to eat potatoes. They are not blood group 0 but if you are eating out there often isn't another alternative.
We don't eat them at home.

anotherdayanothersquabble · 01/07/2015 08:31

Brownies

Milllii · 01/07/2015 09:25

I agree fats are good for is but only if they naturally come with the food. Ie cooking chicken with skin, salmon, mackerel, nuts. avocado, coconuts as a whole, olives. However I feel adding fat to food where it doesn't occur naturally is something I am cautious of. These oils are eaten in greater quantities than occur naturally within a portion of food. Sometimes I wonder if we are in danger of going too far with adding processed fats as we were to going fat free.

Milllii · 01/07/2015 09:27

another did the brownies taste good? I have tried them but had to agree with the Ella thread on MN that they were not nice at all. Glad yours were better.

yumyumpoppycat · 01/07/2015 10:17

That bread looks interesting another Flowers

Will have to find the ella thread ...I have the book from the library but not made anything...reviews on amazon aren't great. shame they didn't test things better.

I had to add an item to my amazon order and spend an extra fiver in the process to save £3 on delivery so have ordered this www.amazon.co.uk/Oh-She-Glows-Angela-Liddon/dp/0718181506/ref=pd_rhf_gw_p_img_4?ie=UTF8&refRID=04QT8HBS9FV6HQ9SJMZQ this one had better reviews but I am hoping the price will come down www.amazon.co.uk/Superfoods-Flexible-Approach-Eating-More/dp/1849495823/ref=pd_rhf_dp_p_img_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=01V26HANTEZGE723J0HV

some stuff on sugar causing wrinkles...just a quick google there are probably better discussions elsewhere www.beautybulletin.com/face-and-body/skin-care/does-sugar-cause-wrinkles

Milllii · 01/07/2015 10:33

Interesting article. Makeup, foundation and all the other lotions and potions is also believed to cause wrinkles. Chemicals in them apparently.

CainInThePunting · 01/07/2015 10:34

I can see why you are getting flack for your choice of language OP.

I used to go to SW and at the group there was a lady who lost about 5 stone IIRC, she looked healthier and felt so much better but she was in tears at group one week because her family and friends were making comments about her face having 'caved in' amongst other things. I couldn't believe how unkind and unsupportive it was of them and she was terribly hurt so I do think you should change the language you are using.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that skin can take up to 6 months to contract back once the underlying fat is lost.
Drinking lots of water improves elasticity of the skin so should help.
I can live with wrinkles, it's being overweight and unhealthy which worries me.

Vivacia · 01/07/2015 10:49

Thanks cain you put that so much better than I did.

Milllii · 01/07/2015 11:30

Downer How exciting that your wedding is soon.

Milllii · 01/07/2015 11:31

Dowser .....phone changed it Smile

jaykay34 · 03/07/2015 19:30

I am 35, and put on 4 stone during pregnancy last year. Add this to another stone I had put on prior to getting pregnant (due to giving up smoking).
Since the birth of my son in September I have been on a real health kick - drinking water and green tea only, eating fresh foods, running 5k 4 times a week and walking everywhere. I have now lost the whole five stone.
I actually am looking a lot younger than I did nine months ago - very bright eyed and healthy.
I believe if you eat right - don't cut out food groups - just be sensible, drink water, don't smoke -or drink excessively and use a good moisturiser - you can lose a tonne of weight and look really well in the face Smile .

Pagalee · 03/07/2015 19:33

Low carb and eat good fats.

I have almost completely swapped potatoes, white pasta and rice for sweet potatoes and (smaller portions of) brown rice, and I eat a lot of protein - lots of chicken, fish, seafood, eggs, avocados and some nuts, lentils and beans - and loads of veg and fruit.

Also, consider weights as well as cardio.

Milllii · 03/07/2015 21:59

jaykay34 Well done on your weight loss. I think that losing weight at 35 is different to losing weight over 50. When you are older the plumpness starts to decline anyway and add to that a huge quick weightloss and some women do suffer with their face falling.
