Night Eating

I have a horrendous night eating habit.

I can happily manage all day eating well but as soon as the night comes I'm into the cupboards stuffing my face when I'm not even hungry.

It's not so bad when DP is there but when he's working nights I'm unstoppable!

I hate myself for it every time but the binge seems to happen in my head before I even touch the food IYSWIM. I don't feel like I'm making any progress and although I'm going to the gym and eating well during the day, it's ruined by night time binges.

Does anyone else have this problem/have you had it? What can I do to stop myself clearing the cupboards at night?

I had this issue and it was totally depressing since I sometimes ate twice or three times a night. I only conquered it (after years of restriction during the day) by eating regular meals with nourishing food during the day. You say you are eating properly during the day? My body thought a period of starvation was coming (i.e. day) so it stocked up at night. It now happens only occasionally and usually when I haven't listen to my body's hunger signals during the day. Are you sure you are eating enough in the day?

Thanks for replying.

Since I've been exercising I've actually eaten more meals in the day than I used to!

I normally have porridge and a banana for breakfast, pasta with various things for lunch and grilled chicken with noodles and veggies or something at night. I don't really eat snacks anymore.

I certainly don't feel hungry but maybe I'm really not eating enough. Do you think it might be worth having more (healthy) snacks or a bigger dinner?

I don't have am answer but I certainly have the same problem!

I've started eating better sized meals through the day, which helps a bit, but it is still happening (especially if I've had a glass or two of wine Blush).

I wonder if building in a (small) supper just before bed might help... So you know that's coming a don't binge beforehand?

Alternatively, I've heard people say that they brush their teeth straight after dinner to stop them grazing in the evening...

must admit, having that small snack (slice of bread / cold meat) certainly seems to help although not always. Last night for example was a 'bad night' so feel yuk today. Hard to get back on track as it becomes a vicious circle.

Your eating at night when DH isn't there because you are emotional eating. Either you don't like being on your own and miss him and are worried about him or you see it as a time when you can eat freely whilst no one is there to judge you? Just a thought.Smile
