Hi all,

I need some recommendations for protein shakes as a post work out meal. I do high intense strength training 2-3 times a week and I sometimes struggle to have a protein rich meal after my workout... Especially if I go to the gym first thing in the morning and later I'm running to get to work on time....

I have never been a big fan of protein shakes but now I need them as a protein shake would be any day better than no post workout meal....

Also..need something that isn't loaded with sugar...

TIA :)

I don't have any thoughts about you as a person Cote and if you do spend most of your time in Adult Fiction, where I rarely venture, then it must just be coincidence that I seem to see you talking about diet/nutrition and a lot Smile.

I specified the reasons why a study on the supplements wouldn't state categorically that they help muscle gain, what they would state if it were the case, however, is if they definitely don't (as they do in the case of untrained individuals). As has been explained, three weeks is a very short period of time to assess naturally acquired strength gains. Regardless, the opening post was not 'should I use protein shakes?', it was 'can anyone recommend a protein shake?'

Studies relating to diet/ food/ food for fitness are constantly changing. Just like now there are studies showing the intermittent fasting may not work for women as well as it does for men. Which contradicts previous studies. Studies are show that sat fat may not be as harmful as previous thoughts.

Had the OP asked 'should I use proteins shakes' I would have advised they need to look into why they want to, what they want to achieve and make a decision based on the information available.

However, that's not what she asked. The Op isn't asking for the science or opinions. She is asking for recommendations.

Exactly shewept if everyone randomly jumped into weight loss threads with their own views on the approach the OP states they are taking then there would be more fallout than on AIBU - you can find studies to support pretty much any nutritional theory you want to espouse or contradict. It is a young and ever moving science that is never going to be one size fits all because we are all different and bodies aren't computerised machines.

You clearly do have thoughts on me as a person, calling me a Jehovah's witness patrolling all threads and preaching my "beliefs". You said "You are clearly convinced that your way is the only way".

"I seem to see you talking about diet/nutrition and a lot"

You are either dreaming about me or remembering posts from years ago. It's both flattering and creepy.

"three weeks is a very short period of time to assess naturally acquired strength gains"

You clearly know something all those scientists don't. You should tell them how silly they have been by doing a meta-analysis on those studies. (Please CC me on that correspondence Smile)

"Regardless, the opening post was not 'should I use protein shakes?', it was 'can anyone recommend a protein shake?'"

OP says she is not a fan of protein shakes and is only considering it because she has no time after a workout and protein shake is better than no meal. She says she would ideally like to have two eggs.

What I said in response was that she could just take two hardboiled eggs with her to the gym. It is a totally reasonable reply to someone who has said the above, and I am sure that she has not taken it as a personal attack, like some of you protein shakers on here.

like some of you protein shakers on here how very grown up of you. Hmm

you didn't only suggest she takes 2 boiled eggs. You then continued to support you 'protein shakes are devils work' style posts, with random studies and telling everyone why you shouldn't have them.

Actually scientists know that takes significantly longer to build a decent amount of muscle. These studies are only funded for certain time periods and never have enough funding to do say, 6 months.

Hi all,

It's the OP here.... Maybe I'm being ignorant, but why do protein shakes have such a bad rep!?! Isn't whey protein just a derivative of milk ? How is that any different from say cheese?.... Or am I am over simplifying this!?

Anyways, I have been taking protein shakes twice a week post strength training and I really think it's been helping.... I used to train pre pregnancy and never took any shakes post workout.... 2 years after having DS and having gone through a bout of depression as a result of excess weight, I have seen very quick results given I've been training only for six weeks....

It purely because they are highly processed and often have sweetners and or sugar in.

Also there is a lot in the media regarding high protein diets being bad for you. The same kind as the stories about carb heavy diets being bad for you. Best thing to do is read the reports and make your own mind up. There is studies to show everything is bad for you if you look for it.

For me it's a no Brainer. I can't eat most carbs due to digestive issues and too much fat in my diet makes me sick. So my protein, fat and carbs are balanced to assist my training while taking my dietary needs into consideration and help me lose fat. So I have a protein heavy diet. I feel better on it, have less health issues, am stronger, fitter and leaner.

Oh and lifting has helped me shift 9 stone, build muscle and I don't take anti depressants anymore. I have more confidence that has come from the massive improvements I have made in the gym. Best thing I ever did.
