What am I doing wrong

I am trying very hard to drop a little bit of weight, I will never be super skinny its not in my genes but I want to be a comfy size 10.

A typical days food is:
Brekkie - bowl of cereal or 2 pieces of toast and a glass of water (sometimes a smoothie)
Lunch - An apple, 2 satsumas and a belvita brekkie biscuit
Dinner - something home cooked, spag bol with brown pasta etc and then a activia yoghurt for dinner

I have 2 coffees during the day, with 1 sugar in each and the rest of the time drink water

In a usual week I go to the gym 5 times, a combination of classes including zumba, body combat, body pump and swimming.

I am stuck at my weight, what else can I do??? I am trying SO hard! I just have this big wobbly belly that will not sod off

What is your TDEE?
ie the amount of calories YOUR body needs to keep going?

what are your portion sizes?

what about the weekend, esp booze and evening snacks?

Log what you eat on MyFitnessPal for a couple of weeks.
Do not change anything at all, set it to stay the same weight, but understand your portion sizes as that sounds the most likely.

Buggeret · 19/03/2015 10:36

I went to the gym and was assessed, they said without exercise I need 1600 calories per day.

I don't think my portion sizes are massive, although I am trying to cut them down at dinner as thats the main one I think it could be due to. I actually eat less and exercise more at the weekend. Don't drink often as I think they're easy calories to cut out.

Being realistic I don't want no nice food in my life, I don't see the point as its not sustainable which is why I try to exercise a lot. Luckily I am more of a savoury fan than a sweet fan.

I just want to blame my genetics for being stuck.

Hmm, you sound like one of the people who might genuinely enjoy 5:2

Its a method that lets you manage your weight while still enjoying the good things in life a couple of times a week
and happens to burn visceral fat very effectively

Pop over and tuck under BigChoc's wing and you'll be where you want to be in a couple of months Smile

Buggeret · 19/03/2015 10:46

I've thought about 5:2, my only concern is on the 500 calorie days do you have the energy for they gym?

OP posts:
Buggeret · 19/03/2015 10:47

Yeah I have looked at 5:2, my only concern was whether on the fasting days I would manage to go to the gym or would my energy levels be too low?

OP posts:
TalkinPeace · 19/03/2015 11:01

If you are overweight, you have 10,000 calories stored across the back of your hips for future use.

On a fasting day I've been known to

  • swim a mile
  • do an hour of yoga
  • do an hour of bodypump
  • walk home

no worries
exercising while fasted is really cool and rips through visceral fat
I don't do breakfast so always go to the gym having not eaten since the evening before
lots of the 5:2 exercisers do - have a look at bigchoc's exercise thread on the 5:2 board.

Buggeret · 19/03/2015 11:04

Thanks, will have a look Smile

What about weight training. Tones you up, burns fat even when at rest, boosts metabolism and generally you can go down a dress size.

TalkinPeace · 19/03/2015 13:23

Exercise, no matter how much you do is only the minor part of weight loss.
Running a calorie deficit is the only way to make the body use up its reserves rather than rely on the daily supply.

Effii · 19/03/2015 13:31

To be fair the OP does a lot of exercise already and doesn't eat that much at all.

Effii · 19/03/2015 13:32

I don't think she has a lot of weight to lose either.

Buggeret · 19/03/2015 13:44

I don't want to lose weight, just size, a bit off my wobbly belly. We go away in August and I would like to be "OK" with my body by then, I don't expect to love it, just be OK with it.

Maybe I will swap some classes to body pump, I've done it once and loved it. Although I am so feeble.

So far this week I went swimming on Sunday and did 50 lengths, zumba monday went into the gym on Tuesday and burned 500 calories, yesterday had the day off as I was feeling a bit rubbish, will do combat or go for a swim tonight, then possibly pump tomorrow and sunday, not sure about saturday yet.

Pump is great
Pilates and Yoga are great at flattening the tummy too

CiderwithBuda · 19/03/2015 13:58

You don't seem to have any protein during the day? Just carbs really. If you added protein to breakfast and lunch you will feel fuller for longer and would lose bloat.

Buggeret · 19/03/2015 15:13

Most of my protein is in my evening meal I think.

I love eggs but I always struggle to get up in time to make them for breakfast. Could cook up some chicken to snack on during the day though I suppose.

I love pilates and yoga but all the classes are on while I'm at work sadly

I would add more natural fats into your diet to burn the body fat and cut out ALL processed foods as they do contain lots of hidden sugars. To me looking at your typical day your also not eating enough which would make your body hold on even tighter to the fat stores.
My fitness pal is great log every mouthful it helps keep you on track. Also up your water intake I drink 3/4 litres of water a day

CiderwithBuda · 19/03/2015 15:31

For proteins based breakfasts you could have Greek yoghurt with some berries or you could cook eggs the nights before and have hard boiled eggs. You can also make up little mini quiche type muffins - I think they are called muffin in a minute if you google.

Buggeret · 19/03/2015 15:40

I do drink a LOT of water so no issues there.

Will try downloading my fitness pal, maybe I've missed something obvious

I don't find Greek yoghurt filling enough but will definitely try the muffin idea, thanks

Just been looking at Fitbits as an option as I think it syncs with myfitness pal.

Anyone have any experience of these? I think I would need the "One" as I worry the straps on the wearable ones may flare my eczema up

Ah, the starvation mode myth again.
The body CANNOT hang onto stores - if it needs the calories it will burn them.

FitBits are much talked about but apparently not very accurate

scrambled eggs take less than 2 minutes to cook : you must have that long in the morning Smile

Buggeret · 19/03/2015 21:06

Maybe i should try and get up a little earlier Smile

Definitely going to start tracking food as i must be missing something as i dont feel i deserve this massive stomach. My legs and arms are fine, just my stupid stomach
