Weight loss chat

Any ideas for breakfast that are both low carb and low fat?

Am a bit stuck I can do one or the other but not both! I can have one egg scrambled with tomatoes but I'm always quite hungry in the morning!

I have a protein shake, unsweetened Alpro and Good Hemp protein powder.

Tastes a bit grim at first but you get used to it, keeps me full for hours.

If you're doing low carb, you don't have to do low fat.

I'd make that egg into an omelette: then you could have it with mushrooms, tomatoes, prawns, ham; whatever you wanted that was low carb/fat.

Thanks for that. I have to do low fat at the moment as I'm on orlistat. Also have type2 diabetes and despite losing 10kg since Jan my sugar levels aren't great so hence low carb! I have done pure low carb several times before but found it didn't work as well recently.

How about plain low fat yogurt or yogurt with a few blueberries? Or something more like a main meal - chicken breast with salad or veg?

Do you use the spray oil that's very low calorie?

Have you a nutritionist who's given you some guidance? It must be hard to cut both carbs and fat.

Have you seen this recipe for pastryless quiche, from SW?

A woman I worked with used to make one of these each day and eat it for breakfast and elevenses.

Thanks so much. That quiche looks great especially ad I can prepare it in advance as I have to leave early for work.

I was just doing low fat and a normal amount of good carbs but my last diabetic sugar level was so high they say I might have to start insulin if next one is not better. So I thought I would cut down further as I really don't want that to happen.

I did do the Newcastle diabetic diet a few years ago. Its to kick start insulin production. It worked but have slowly regained most of weight and am back on meds.

Low carb and low fat is a crazy combination, especially at breakfast (unless you are an obsessive body builder in a cutting phase, eating industrial quantities of protein). You will inevitably feel hungry and I can't see how anyone could sustain it, if they did it wouldn't be healthy....can't you try and have low GI carbs that won't spike your blood sugar like white/processed ones? Oatcakes or porridge, beans, brown rice - you would probably need to think of breakfast as you would lunch or dinner, as apple suggests to give yourself more options.

Why are you doing both at once ?
It cannot be good for your system.

Scrambled egg on smoked salmon is a good meal that will keep you full for hours.
Or yoghurt with a stir of honey and a handful of berries
or porridge

what do you drink - as there is so much sugar in drinks that people forget

for resetting your insulin system, nothing beats 5:2 intermittent fasting - AND its long term sustainable

reup - I'm not a doctor, but isn't the point of Orlistat to stop/hinder the abosorption of fat from food into your body? And unless you consume fat you don't take it? In which case why not just low carb and have some fat Confused?

Thanks. I tried 5:2 and put on weight - I overate on the 5 days. I felt ill on the fasting days which is weird as I did 8 wks on the Newcastle diabetic diet which was 600 calories a day. But the food was evenly spaced. If I go too long without food I can get hypos.

The really low carb is just a short term thing to try and sort out my sugar levels. I will go back to more low GI foods after a month.

Orlistat does only work on fat but even a few low fat foods add up over the course of the day. I've not had any stomach upsets with it but was on the verge of it and couldn't think what has caused it. I got railroaded into taking it it by my Dr but it is helping with my crap motivation.

Ok reup then I'd look at getting the fat you can have in the first half of the day, take the 'breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince(?), dine like a pauper' approach. Starting the day without something more filling is a bad plan IMO....

You might also want to have a look at Paleo, which can be v successful for people with diabetes...

I have Gestational Diabetes (diabetes in pregnancy) at the moment and saw a dietician who recommended a low fat/low carb diet; it is in line with following the guidelines of a healthy Mediterranean diet. Her recommendations to me for breakfast were:
I can have 220g of cooked porridge OR 1 shredded wheat in low fat milk OR 2 slices of brown bread with minimum amount of low fat spread
AND I can have cooked egg/lean rasher/low fat cheese/mushrooms/tomato (grilling is rather than frying where possible)

I'm sure you can adjust this to suit your own appetite/needs (I'm not sure how quantities vary from when pregnant iyswim). Excess Carbs turn into sugar and excess sugar/salt/saturated fats that are not burnt off turn into fat, which in turn causes weight gain.
