New study from the bbc

The bbc have done some new research (overseen by scientists from Oxford/Cambridge) into personalised diet plans. It basically identifies 3 types of eaters and the best suited diet for them.

So feasters (who find it hard to stop once they start eating)
Cravers (who feel hungry all the time)
Emotional eaters (who turn to food when they get stressed or anxious.)

They suggest feasters should eat high protein, low glycaemia index (GI) diet
Cravers should do the 5:2
Emotional eaters should do CBT

Saw that this morning. I'm a feaster apparently. I think it's right. I've long known that. Sad I just love carbs too much.

Breadandwine · 12/01/2015 21:23

The 'Feasters' group more or less all over-ate during that first meal - thus 'confirming' the theory that this group had a problem with knowing when they were full.

However - everyone was told that the testing would begin in the morning, and were encouraged to eat up during what was described as 'The last supper'.

So of course they ate more than they would usually do. Fatally flawed experiment, IMO!

VashtaNerada · 12/01/2015 22:06

I thought it was interesting. Any other emotional eaters want to set up a support group?

fidelma · 12/01/2015 22:36

Great programme. I love Tanya Bryon super psychologist.
Of course this won't fit everyone but it's a good gauge for most.

kaykayred · 13/01/2015 22:45

I think I am an emotional eater. Food holds absolutely no interest to me (other than the fact I need to eat it to live), except for when I am bored or stressed, at which point I end up eating for no reason. Mainly when I'm bored.

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/01/2015 02:12

I'm a Feaster. I was hoping someone would start a thread about this.

Day two of high protein, low GI for me. I don't feel hungry but who knows if it will work...

Anyone else actually going to try the tips?

Dietagainmonday · 20/01/2015 11:13

I've done the online test and I'm a feaster too! Find once i start eating I don't stop.. I too will be starting high protein low GI

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/01/2015 13:30

Good. We will see if this works. DH is a Craver and he is on day two of the 5:2. He's a bit grumpy.

badRoly · 20/01/2015 13:35

I came out with 35% craver, 33% emotional and 32% feaster! So I need to do a combination of all 3 somehow HmmWink

MeganChips · 20/01/2015 13:45

I'm 53% feaster, 47% craver.

5:2 with high protein and low GI it is then! I can do pretty much any type of eating plan to be fair, as long as I can still have wine.

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/01/2015 14:03

Roly we are combining low GI, high protein and 5:2 here. A bit of CBT and you are all good!

Wine is no GI thank goodness. Unfortunately, the day after wine I want high GI, high crunchy things with salt and fat. Whatever diet that is.

badRoly · 20/01/2015 14:35

Would Paul McKenna out as CBT? I can probably manage low GI/high protein ok, but 5:2 scares me - I worry about 'crashing' in the evening while still have to do child pick ups or migraines (sometimes I get them if I skip breakfast). Maybe I should just go for it!

sliceofsoup · 20/01/2015 14:47

I thought I would be all three just from the description in the OP. And I came out at 35% 34% 31% so I guess I am really.

I don't think that doing that test has helped at all. Doing the diets might, but I still don't have will power.

So not really sure what the point of the study was. Do we need more categories rather than more help? I don't think so.

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/01/2015 15:04

I think the theory is that you need less 'will power' if you have a diet that suits you. As a Feaster I just want to eat more and more. If I eat brown stuff and protein, it is nice enough to eat but I don't want tons of it. I feel full therefore less will power required. At least that's my take on it. When I've done similar (WW Simply Filling or whatever they called it) it did work.

I worry about 5:2 as well. I get headaches if I don't eat.

Maybe they need a diet for those who come out balanced between the three as well.

Breadandwine · 22/01/2015 01:25

Please don't worry about doing 5:2 - it is the most doable of all diets, IMO.

It's true it takes a couple of fast days to get into it - but you never need to go without food, you just make healthier choices. And you can go into it at whatever level you feel comfortable with. I began with half my calories two days a week, nearly three years ago - and eventually I was able to go down to a quarter of my daily calories. Later on I found I could give up breakfast altogether - and now I've reached my goal weight, after losing 24lbs, I have one fast per week where I only have liquids in a 24 hour period.

I feel as fit and healthy as I've ever done and I have more energy sometimes than I know what to do with.

That, along with knowing that I'm fighting diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer's, heart disease, keeps me on track.

I thoroughly recommend you browse the latest thread, No.49, and look at the inspirational stories on there. It's probably the friendliest, most supportive thread on Mumsnet - and it's been going for 2 and a half years with many, many success stories. Smile
