This is how a slim person eats

I have never been overweight, apart from post-baby. Would it be helpful for me to tell you how I stay slim?

Disclaimer: I consider myself very fortunate to have been raised by a mother who a) gave us a love of healthy food and being active and b) never had food issues herself, so I have never learned to be an emotional eater.

I really think emotional eating is a huge issue for a lot of my friends. And I don't claim to have the answer to overcome this. I do know, however, that it's a lot harder to "binge" on healthy food. And I believe the food "industry" manufactures food that is addictive, precisely so that you'll buy more.

My self-imposed rules, because contrary to what people around me believe, I'm not "effortlessly" slim. I work at it.

  • nothing is banned, because that would create cravings (I love cake, but I eat it 2-3 times a week not every day)
  • food is neither reward nor punishment
  • vegetables at every meal
  • I don't count calories but I do count fruit & veg - aim for 7 a day
  • eat for health not weight - look at the nutritional value and eat mostly whole foods
  • carbs are fine but 90% of the time they are brown not white
  • drink mainly water or green tea, apart from one coffee & milk a day and approx two glasses of wine a week
  • eat mainly dark chocolate (70%), soon milk chocolate will taste too sweet by comparison
  • walk everywhere if time permits
  • plan ahead so time does permit!
  • do a form of exercise you love, 2-3 times a week (I am not naturally sporty but enjoy swimming and cycling)
  • snacks are to tide you over till a mealtime, not fill you up (nuts, fruit, yoghurt)
  • don't starve yourself, if you're hungry between meals have a healthy snack
  • no low-fat or diet anything, it is usually full of sugar or nasties
  • cook from scratch every day - not necessarily fancy, jacket potato and tuna is fine, with some green veg on the side! if you cook from scratch then there will be no secret addictive ingredients to make you binge eat
  • lean protein with every meal
  • don't buy biscuits or crisps (if you're desperate, bake some, it'll probably not be worth the effort)
  • don't buy sweets for your children, that way they are not there to tempt you (and your DCs don't need them)
  • eat seasonally
  • meal plan all the time
  • eat at roughly the same time every day
  • eat dinner earlier rather than later (for me 7pm)
  • if you need something upstairs, get it now, all activity is good (I potter a lot)

This is how I, a size 14 eat.
-with family and friends
-with enjoyment
-with gusto
-with a hearty appetite
-with no rules
-with a bit of whatever I fancy
-without guilt
-without suggesting what other adults should or shouldn't eat
HTH

Bless :)

dingit · 17/12/2014 18:10

Just Grin at all the replies. Wonder if the op still feels smug. Sounds just like my bitch of a sil.

specialsubject · 17/12/2014 18:10

thought this would not be well received - the obvious never is. There are of course people who are fat due to physical or mental illness, but the diet crooks thrive on the rest because everyone wants a quick and painless fix. Ain't no such animal.

one correction; there's no stomach clock, you can eat when you like - it is how much that matters.

Scaredycat3000 · 17/12/2014 18:14

Is the OP that Katie woman? The one always in the papers upsetting people, the one who thought she could gain a bit of weight then loose it just too show how easy it was. Except she doesn't appear to have lost the weight? Oh can't be the OP, sorry my mistake.

Laska42 · 17/12/2014 18:14

eee bugger ...and theres me eating pie and chips everyday..

elspethmcgillicuddy · 17/12/2014 18:14

Ummm... You seem to think you have no food issues but sounds to me like you think it through quite thoroughly. Those are a lot of rules you impose on yourself (and some of them contradict one another). I wonder if you do in fact have some issues.

I wonder whether you are trying to be helpful but I think lots of people will be a bit cross....

Namechangeyetagaintohide · 17/12/2014 18:15

I'm very slim. That's not how I eat. I do some of those things but not all.

A snack is indeed to fill me up.
I don't exercise. I do an active job but actual exercise ? No.
I lurve crisps. Best thing ever.
I prefer milk chocolate.

Darquesse · 17/12/2014 18:15

Another slim girl over here, size 8 thanks. I eat what I want when I want it. Yum!

Unidentifieditem · 17/12/2014 18:15

Hello love, I'm a size 8-10. Have been since I turned 18. Have had a child.
I eat chocolate, cake, crisps, ice cream, drink wine (lots sometimes) and try to avoid spouting smug shit on the internet under the pretence of helping others. I find that keeps my head:arse ratio about right.

Unidentifieditem · 17/12/2014 18:17

I also eat seasonally. This season = mince pies! baileys, gingerbread, chocolate from the advent calendar and tangerines. See. Balanced.

Ihavenobrain · 17/12/2014 18:17

Attack attack attack.
I also seem to easily piss people off on mn
When I was a new mum 10 years ago I used to come on mn for advice and on so many occasions Id be abused and end feeling so shit and inadequate

CurlyhairedAssassin · 17/12/2014 18:18

Blimey, OP. There was a thread a few weeks back where someone who DID struggle with weight asked if any naturally slim people would mind giving an example of what they ate on an average day. If I recall most people thought of it as a really helpful thread, it's a good idea to see how other people do things if you think you just might be doing it wrong but not know how.

But to start a thread off yourself, saying "I'm the perfect weight, come and be like me" is wayyyy up yourself! Wait to be asked what you eat, you twonk!

MinnieM1 · 17/12/2014 18:19

Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha Grin
That is all

AshesOfRoses · 17/12/2014 18:21

Xmas Grin at Unidentified's post. That's almost my entire diet. I also eat a rainbow. Of Quality Street.

Passthecake30 · 17/12/2014 18:22

Another slim one here...is there room to join you on your pedestal? ?

Namechangeyetagaintohide · 17/12/2014 18:23

If anyone interested I have copied the things from the OP that I do do - but not consciously. Feel free to ignore I just thought it might be interesting.

  • nothing is banned, because that would create cravings (I love cake, but I eat it 2-3 times a week not every day)
  • food is neither reward nor punishment
  • vegetables at every meal
  • I don't count calories but I do count fruit & veg - usually manage 3-4 a day
  • drink mainly water apart from one coffee & milk a day and no alcohol.
  • walk everywhere if time permits
  • don't starve myself - don't like cake/biscuits between meals prefer say cheese on crackers/nuts/toast/olives
  • no low-fat or diet anything, it is usually full of sugar or nasties
  • cook from scratch every day - actually yes I do mostly. Apart from the weekly take away/throw in the oven pizza
  • lean protein with every meal
  • don't buy sweets (do get given them though Grin )
  • meal plan all the time.

Does seem like I do quite a few of those things even after I initially said I don't. Confused

GraysAnalogy · 17/12/2014 18:24

HAHAHAHAHAHAH

Namechangeyetagaintohide · 17/12/2014 18:25

But I don't think I'm especially heathy. I think I eat too much salt. And my favourites foods are things like cheese or pate bacon sandwicheswhich aren't exactly healthy.

Namechangeyetagaintohide · 17/12/2014 18:25

Argh strike out fail.

photocop · 17/12/2014 18:27

I never claimed it works for everyone. It works for me.

Anyway, I never intended to cause offence. Sorry. I worded it badly.

If I stated that I lived on chocolate, pizza, crisps, cake, sweets and beer and stayed slim, that would be smug.

Allthelittlefoxes · 17/12/2014 18:28

I think you should rename your thread 'This is how a twat pontificates'
And frankly - I am now a little bit fat and eat pretty much like you do, although less fruit and fewer carbs. When I was a size 6 I skipped breakfast, smoked like a lum and then ate a huge McDonalds take away for dinner. I also drank a lot.
Stress and smoking kept me thin (along with youth and no kids yet) but I'm not sure i would recommend it.....

tibbysmum · 17/12/2014 18:28

have aBiscuit

TalkinPeace · 17/12/2014 18:29

OP
I am also slim, and i suspect a lot older than you

  • I do not snack
  • I do 5:2 so eat very little on two days a week
  • I normally do not have Alcohol Monday to Thursday
  • supper is a family meal of nice food for all of us

I try to enjoy life

googoodolly · 17/12/2014 18:30

I'm slim and eat whatever I like. My only rule is stop when I feel full.
