I need to lose about 5.5 stone in just over 10 months - possible?

NotActuallyAMum · 04/10/2006 08:40

I'm getting married at the end of August and I really, desperately want to do this. I'm thinking of doing Slimming World, not going to class just doing it myself. I've done this before and lost lots of weight (can't remember how much, it was ages ago)

If anyone has any other ideas/experiences I'd love to hear them

Good luck - you need to track down puff shes lost about that much. I hink she started on GI not sure how long it took, but your 1/2 stone a month sound very reasonable.

MadameMorticiaMills · 04/10/2006 08:55

By following the GI diet I lost 3.5 stone in 4 months. Upped the excercise a little and it was easy!

NotActuallyAMum · 04/10/2006 08:59

Thanks for your replies ladies Hope puff sees this and posts...

What's the GI diet? I've never heard of that one

I'll try and find a link for the previous threads for the GI. It's basically eating low glycemic index foods, stuff that doesn't raise your blood sugar and keeps you feeling fuller for longer. It's all very healthy but tasty too.

Furball · 04/10/2006 09:04

There's some info Here It's all about sugars etc in foods and how long it takes to digest etc. Sounds complicated but once you know the sort of things you can have it really is quite simple to slip into everyday life

Thanks again both of you

I'll have a look at those, just had a quick glance at some of those recipes they certainly look very filling and tasty

In the meantime, until I decide which diet I'm going to follow, I'm starting cutting down as of now - weighed myself this morning, I'm 16 stone 2 But I can and will do this

EXACTLY the same wight that I was when I started. Now weigh 12 stone 3 and at 5'10 I'm not looking too bad.

It can be done, you just need some motivation!

NotActuallyAMum · 04/10/2006 09:23

Just had a look on ww website, I'll look into the no count too

MadameMM I'm only 5 feet 2, I want to get down to about 11.5 stone. About 3 years ago I lost 5 stone 10 in 6 months by taking diethylpropion tablets but needless to say I've put it all - and more - back on since I came off them

But you're right, it can be done. I'll use my wedding dress as motivation. I've already got it - size 14. There is a bit of 'give' at the back though just in case but I'm not thinking like that. I will do it. Here's the dress

Well there you go! You could put pictures up of the dress on cupboard doors and on the fridge for moments of weakness.

That's a beautiful dress btw

pesme · 04/10/2006 09:28

gorgeous dress, of course you can lose the weight and you have enough time to do it sensibily. ww is fab. you should join a club or do some online weighin thing (i am doing one here and it is a good motivator).

badkarma · 04/10/2006 09:33

I have followed both WW and SW, and SW is by far the best of the 2 for eating lots!! All the fruit is free, (on WW they are valued from 0.5points to 1.5points) Potatoes, Pasta and Rice are free on a green day and most meats are free on a red day... lots of variety.. and you can change from red and green days..

Your dress is truly amazing!! I love the pic of it in the dark! Congratulations!!

NotActuallyAMum · 04/10/2006 09:34

Online weigh in on here sounds good, I really don't think I could go to a club...

Dress is every bit as gorgeous as it looks still can't believe I only paid £135, it looks like a £1k dress

My DP and his dd (she lives with us) are under strict instructions to confiscate anything 'naughty' that they see me with, and it's extremely rare for me to be in the house on my own so at least I've got some help that way

Thank you too badkarma, x posts with you

lemonaid · 04/10/2006 09:56

If you do No Count on WW then all the fruit is free there too (you don't faff around with points doing No Count).

Hattiecat · 04/10/2006 10:26

i was diagnosed with gall stones in january so had to follow a low fat diet (3% and less) and have lost 4.5 stone since then. its been a huge learning curve with what to eat and what not, but i'd recommend it as a really healthy diet and am going to stick to it week days once had op to take gall bladder out . good luck - the dress is beautiful

NotActuallyAMum · 04/10/2006 10:50

lemonaid - thank heavens for that! I will look at ww, couldn't do it if everything was restricted though!

Hattiecat have I read that right - you are eating only food which contains 3% fat or less and you've lost 4.5 stone in 9 months? What kind of things do you eat? Presumably potatoes, any veg, any fruit, dried pasta, rice. Or am I way out, lol?

OP posts:
Hattiecat · 04/10/2006 19:23

no you're not miles away at all...i eat chicken, white fish, skimmed milk, fruit veg, rice, pasta, pulses, lots of tomato based sauces. also for lunch if you have tescos near you (mind you who deosn't) then i get healthy eating naan breads, toast them and then heat some flavoured chicken (bbq, tikka, mexican etc) (buy it already like that from tesco) and stuff it in the naan which is sooooooooooo tasty...also crumpets, healthy eating hot cross buns have just found. haven't stopped drinking and have jelly tots and tootie fruities as treats. must admit haven't cheated cos the pain of gall stones is SO hideous i would do anything to avoid it. having said that the diet (once i got usdd to it) has beeen fine really...anymore info?!

JiminyCricket · 04/10/2006 19:39

The downside is that when you diet quite fast you will lose weight, but when you get to a point where you stop the diet - and psychologically and physically we are not really programmed to control weight strictly, in fact the reverse, if your body thinks it is going into starvation it will deliberately do everything in its power to make you eat - anyway, when you stop dieting, wheras before you might have only put on weight if you had excess calories of x amount, now you will put on weight even with a much smaller calorie excess, which is the main cause of yo-yo dieting (and why dieters tend to get bigger not smaller over time). Basically your body is programmed to defend a set point weight - that can be altered by a genetic predisposition to be obese, or by regular overeating, but normally people naturally stay broadly within their own natural weight range through their life whether they diet or not. My advice would be to do it the boring but slow way (just cut out snacks except for fruit and occasional treats), and I bet you'll look fab anyway.

NotActuallyAMum · 05/10/2006 12:13

Hattiecat thank you for that Do you eat potatoes? Jacket potatoes are my absolute favourite food, and I can eat them dry just with lots of pepper on, yummmmmyyyy

JiminyCricket I really do know what you mean about yo-yo dieting. In the last 6 years I've gone from 10.5 stone, up to 15s 3, down to 9s 7 and now I'm 16s 2.....

But I know what I've got to do and I'm determined to do it

OP posts:
Hattiecat · 05/10/2006 16:25

yes, potatoes are fine - i've got quite into them with a little extra healthy eating cream cheese and salsa and they're yummy. i didn't understant the whole yo-yo dietting thing, all i know is that i actually think that i will stay with eating plan (its not a diet it has to be a way of life for me at the moment, i've no option), i feel better for getting rid of fat and when i'm tempted to be a little naughty don't even enjoy it. by the way, you can get healthy eating sausages and bacon as well, so you can even have a naughty breakfast which is really yummy!!! feel free to ask any more - good luck with it i really hope it works for you x

NotActuallyAMum · 26/10/2006 09:49

Well .... 3 weeks down the line and I've lost 8lbs so not doing too bad so far, and I still have a drink every Saturday too so can't be bad
