Gastric bypass / gastric sleeve

Has anyone had either of these ops?
I'm due to have one or the other in the next few months. My consultant doesn't know which one she'll be able to do until she's 'in' as I'm so big & of a shape that may make bypass difficult.
I would prefer a bypass but I've got to the point where I just want something done.
I have a gastric band, it was fitted in 2006 & never worked, it was either too tight & I vomited constantly or too loose & I could eat whatever I wanted. I had it deflated after about 18 months.
My consultant has now re-inflated my band & it's a nightmare. Every time I eat I get a huge pain with the first mouthful or two, if I then go & throw up that food I can usually then go on to eat a small meal.
I'm sticking with it but it's very hard. Still, I suppose if all I can eat is yogurt, I'll definitely lose weight!
Anyway. Just wondered if anyone had an experience of weight loss surgery?

Are you talking private surgery?

I've had the bypass.

Germgirl · 03/08/2014 16:09

NHS surgery. I had the and done privately. I wish I'd paid the extra then & had a bypass. But I didn't. It was a nightmare from beginning up end.
How did you get on with your bypass?

I'm two months post operation and it's been fine.

I don't understand about the not knowing which op they will do. Is it because of the liver shrinkage?

Germgirl · 03/08/2014 16:19

It's because practically all my weight is carried on my lower belly, I have smallish shoulders, small boobs, no bum at all and two huge tyres below my waist. Because the bypass involves 'hooking' a bit of intestine from low down in the abdomen in order to join it higher up, she's not sure she'll be able to dig deep enough to find the intestine! If she can't, she'll do a sleeve.
I paint such a pretty picture don't i? Smile
Do you mind me asking how much weight you've lost so far?

Just over three stone. Not a lot compared to some people who have had it done, but slow and steady is fine for me.
Whereabouts in the country are you? There are some excellent support groups where I am.

Germgirl · 03/08/2014 16:48

I'm in SE London. There's a support group at the hospital but I haven't been yet, I was in hospital for the first one & working for the second. I will try up make the next one.
3 stone is very good. If you don't mind me asking, how much do you have to lose? (I could do with losing about 14 stone!, realistically if I can do 9-10 I'll be thrilled)
Like you say, slow & steady is best anyway, but your loss isn't slow.

Ideally, I'd lose 15 stone to have a healthy BMI. Realistically, 8 or 9 stone. The three already has made a bug difference to my life.

Germgirl · 03/08/2014 17:03

About the same as me then. Well you're a third of the way there already. Well done! Smile
