How much weight equates to a "dress size"?

Does anyone have a rough idea? I nkow it will vary wildly because of people's different heights/bone structures etc, but how much weight would one have to lose, roughly, to drop a dress size? The Special K (dry heave) adverts always say "drop a dress size in two weeks". Is that healthy or realistic?

Just wondering.

For me, it's been between 10 - 14lbs

NomDePlume · 15/09/2006 11:41

For me, it's about 8lbs

Greensleeves · 15/09/2006 11:42

Bloody hell, so maybe not that healthy to lose it in two weeks then, as recommended by Special K?

Not sure but I lost about 1/2 a stone and went down from 16 to 14
Two weeks unrealistic imo-- you'll just put it back on when you stop the diet.
Cut out all sugary foods and cut down on bread and stodgy carbs-- and exercise 2-3 times a week, you should lose a dress size in 2 months without too much stress

I think I might write to Special K (Kellogs I think?) and point out that they are advicating a very unhealthy and dangerous crash dieting ethic to women in their adverts. I wonder if I'll get a reply? They do it every bloody new year and it p*sses me off!

I do know how to spell advocating, my finger slipped

They will already know what they are doing gs, the healthy amount to lose is between 1-2lb a week although some recent research states 2lb a month is healthy, and they will be well aware of this.

These crash diet adverts really anger me, cereal for breakfast, cereal for lunch and then a healthy dinner. So what about the 5 a day and exersizing for 20 mins. OH no sod that all the experts are wrong if people have 2 bowls of cereal a day we sell double and make double the money

I lost about 10 - 14lbs to go from a 12 to a 10. I would say that was impossible to acheive in two weeks. It took me ages.. about 1 or 2lb a week came off at most, and I was very strict and never cheated and exercised like mad.

NotQuiteCockney · 15/09/2006 11:57

For me to go from an 18 to a 16 was about 10kg. I think?

It's pretty hard to correlate dress size and weight, though - I am stupendously heavy for my height and size. I could probably lose weight and go up a size or two, if I stopped exercising so much.

CheesyFeet · 15/09/2006 12:04

Around about a stone for me.

Greensleeves · 15/09/2006 12:12

I reckon it's about 9-12lb for me. I do think there should be regulations prohibiting companies to advertise dangerous crash dieting. I'm sure the last one I saw said "join more than a million women in the Special K "drop a dress size in two weeks" challenge" or words to that effect. It's worrying.

About a stone for me - have lost 17.5lbs and have dropped a dress size!

Greensleeves · 15/09/2006 12:28

Well done Dottydot!

Pah - another two stone to go, and then I'll be happy!

lemonaid · 15/09/2006 14:52

I guess it depends where you were in the grand scheme of the dress size before -- so e.g. if you were a small 18 then a loss of about 7lb might well make you a 16. But from middle of one size to middle of another is about a stone for me too.
