I eat alot of bread. I can eat 4 peices of toast for breakfast and then am so hungry by lunchtime that I eat 3 sandwiches. Sometimes might have toast before bed too

I find it hard to think of alternatives but am sure that if I cut it out I might lose something.

could you eat crackers with a low fat spread on instead??

nutcracker · 08/09/2006 18:35

Could do for lunch yeah but dunno what to do about breakfast. I know I could have cereal but it never fills me up.

Okay, my stone that I cannot lose... [in bad frame of mind as just back from weighing on electronic scales at gym; a mistake...] you would have thought when I was found to be yeast intolerant (no bread, no alchol etc) I would within 2 months have become completely sylphlike. Yes, I gave up bread and absolutely not difference weight wise, although the runny nose I was getting all the time and feeling sleepy after lunch diappeared so I suppose there's a benefit there.

In your case you might find more protein plus one slice of bread would be better. What about one slice of brown toast with no butter for breakfast and eggs and bacon?

nutcracker · 08/09/2006 18:39

I can do that of a weekend but not enough time in the week really.

I only need to shift a stone but it just will not budge.

I have substituted corn thins for bread at lunch time. For breakfast I either have a smoothie loaded with masses of fruit so it is really thick or porridge (both of which seem to keep me pretty full).

nutcracker · 08/09/2006 18:41

Do you make the smoothie COV ??? Haven't really got time for that either I don't think.

I will try porridge again but it makes me feel sick.

Yes I make them myself. Just lob it all in the blender with some natural yoghurt and blitz, its really quick tbh.

nutcracker · 08/09/2006 18:43

I'll have to try it (will have to buy a blender lol).

I definatly need to eat more fruit so it would kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

I lost weight one summer by replacing my lunch time sandwich with a salad. Was quite easy to do as long as I varied the salad so I didn't get bored. Also had sugar free museli (Asda'a own) for breakfast instead of toast

As far as I am concerned bread is like crack, the more you eat the more you want. For breakfast porridge or eggs, if I am getting hardcore I make protein smoothies with soya protein powder from Holland and Barrett. Lunch, eat the contents of the sandwich without the bread if you see what I mean, i.e. salad with tuna, salad with cheese, etc. etc. Also eat as little white pasta and rice as you can. Stay off of the sugar obviously.

If you can't manage without, a bread with a lower carb content is Burgen Soya and Linseed Loaf. If is definately more filling than plain wholemeal and white. Most supermarkets sell it.

Some years ago I bought a copy of Dr.Atkins Diet Revolution for my xdp. This diet is not for everyone but if you read the explanations about carbs/insulin/hunger you may well recognise your own eating habits. Once I had identified that carbs were really my problem I went on the most successful diet I have ever been on and kept the weight off (until I got pg that is).

Judy1234 · 08/09/2006 19:21

Bread is like that for me too and I've often been known to go out to the bakers specially to buy 6 hot cross buns or cook and warm up that lovely bread you can cook from frozen. So I thought giving it up and alcohol and I'd lose weight but obviously still eating more of other things. I still think I need to because if I ever eat it I feel worse again so for me it's an allergy thing too.
I need to give up sugar really but that's very hard.

Mum2FunkyDude · 08/09/2006 19:26

Try hard boiled egg for breakfast and one slive of toast. You can boil the eggs in the evening. Your problem might be that you need to eat a protein in the morning to inhibit insulin release. Even is slice of cheese. You should try wholemeal breads instead, or rye vita or similar.

Xenia, it is a bit of a cold turkey experience were you feel like shit for a few days but once you are past the first three days and as long as you are eating enough of other food that you enjoy it gets easier as you go along.

Sunnysideup · 08/09/2006 19:28

Nutcracker, I reckon you would lose weight if you cut it. You do eat lots of it! Also, as you say it doesn't actually fill you up, I was always starving mid morning if I had toast for brekkie.

Have porridge, nothing like it for filling you up...I love sweetness unfortunately so I add a little drizzle of golden syrup, v. norty......

I am on weightwatchers at the mo and instead of bread, I have rice or pasta - can have huge platefuls, enough to be really full, so don't miss the bread at all.

I also find I eat MUCH more tasty stuff, instead of a pretty boring sandw. I now have something like a tuna steak with rice for lunch, majorly tasty....

mousiemousie · 08/09/2006 19:29

More protein less carbs is a good weight loss regime!

2ndtime · 08/09/2006 19:33

I was told by a naturopath that I was wheat intolerant so to give up bread and pasta etc. It seemed impossible as I lived on a diet of 80% carbs. It was tough the first couple of days but the health and well being improvements made it all worth while. I lost a stone in 3 weeks, skin was glowing, constant thrush went away etc.
I replaced bread with oat cakes, rice cakes and rye bread all of which are scrummy.
