Hi my first time one this board although I should live here looking at some of the advice people get and how much help i need!
I'm starting with a personal trainer tonight and I'm very nervous. Years ago I was a size 6 with proper washboard abs and since settling down, family etc ive put on a lot of weight. I was over 13st (all my family are very slim so i do stand out) and I've got down to under 11st with ww but I'm not very motivated and it's taken me a long time. I've now started to think about my fitness levels can get out of breath up a few flights of stairs and I think exercise will help push my body closer to my goal weight
What should I expect tonight? What important information do i need to give her to get the most out of these sessions?how long out of my first hour should I expect to be working? And most importantly can anyone give me advice on how long it would be until I start to see some results?

Hi Prettykitty111,

I just did a month of personal training. It really isn't as scary as you'd think. I was very out of shape too but it helped very much. I asked my trainer when I'd start seeing results and he said it depends on various things (i.e. initial weight, commitment, etc.) but on average it takes about 3 months. However, I did see some results by the end of those 4 weeks.

I stopped the training for a bit because it's so expensive but I'm trying to exercise without a gym membership. I'm currently looking for a group of people I could walk/run with for The Hunger Project Thames Path Challenge (25 k) to make a Team to participate in the challenge in September. However, I'm planning on doing 'training walks' with whoever wants to join me. Would you be interested in being part of the Team I'm trying to form? You can even just train with us to start if you don't want to commit to anything just yet. It'll definitely help with the personal training sessions too! Smile

Most importantly - she will (should) ask about your goals. Weight loss is clearly a primary goal for you, but it sounds like fitness also is - do you have any specific goals for how fit you want to get? Have a think about what you want to get out of your sessions.

I've always had trainers where I've been working out within 10-15 mins of the start, and they've used that to gauge my existing fitness. Other people I know have spent 30 mins or more talking. She may take your measurements as well - you can use these as a better gauge than weight, to see whether you're getting slimmer (as building muscle means the scales go up, even though you're burning body fat).

How long till you see results - well, that absolutely depends on you. Are you going to do just 1 session a week with her? What about in between? Will the trainer do you a program to follow in addition to seeing her, and/or do you have a plan for any other physical activity?

Thanks guys. Tonight was amazing. It didn't hurt too much and I've recovered quite quickly but it was just the assessment. Booked again for Friday!
