yes every day .. total addict.. and I know how slim I feel when not eating them.. clearly I AM STUPID in the face of a simple carb...

GemmaPomPom · 27/05/2014 13:41

I know someone who gave up carbs - just carbs and nothing else - and lost so much weight. She didn't even give up wine Grin !

Does anybody have any advice for how me and CarolBornAMan (were you really?) can give up carbs?

I am so desperate to lose weight Sad

So when she gave up carbs, which ones - the obvious ones (wheat, oats, sugar..) or was she very strict and also gave up fruit and 70% chocolate and root veg etc- sensing she was not too strict if she drank wine (liquid sugar)

I need to lose weight - so out of hand now when I look down cant remember what sex I am now, never mind what I was born!

I gave up carbs last year and surprisingly lost 5 stone! I'm now eating carbs moderately and have maintained that loss.

It was easy. Almost too easy

MeganChips · 27/05/2014 18:21

Can you limit carbs instead? I don't feel my best on a low carb diet, especially if I bump up the fat but do feel better if I limit them.

Today I have had:

B Mixed berries and greek yoghurt
L Houmous and salad
D Roast chicken, mushroom sauce, green beans and new potatoes.

Not too carby but enough to keep me happy.

GemmaPomPom · 27/05/2014 18:50

Thanks for the replies. Basically she gave up bread, cakes, pasta, potatoes… all the obvious ones. And walked (too fat to run) on the treadmill for 30 mins a day. That's it. And she went from obese to slim in a few months.

Replace your carbs with fat and you'll not miss the carbs too much.

I've dropped a dress size due to loosing my bloat and in 3 weeks I'm 10lb down.

BrokenStar · 27/05/2014 19:03

You don't miss them after a week or so. I cut down on carbs 2 weeks ago and started going for 30 minute walks on my lunch hour and have lost 8lb so far.
The secret imo is to meal plan and have all the 'right' foods in. I make up a big salad for lunch the night before so I'm not tempted to buy a sandwich.

That sounds like my kind of diet.

I recently lost a stone by cutting down on the crap stuff. Swapped cereal and toast for Greek yoghurt and fruit etc. Then we went on an all inclusive holiday and I'm now struggling to get back on track.

I've stalled now and really want to lose another stone in the next 3 months before we go away again.

Mike, have a look at the boot camp thread in the low carb bit.

And try reading escape the diet trap by John briffa. Explains how the low carb diet works and why others often don't.

Yesterday I ate Greek yogurt, peperami, cheese, steak cooked in butter and garlic mushrooms in a cream sauce amongst other things and I woke up 2 lb lighter today :-)

Joules68 · 27/05/2014 20:20

Yes, you need to eat fat. I also took up running so that helped. Still have a stone or so to go but I'm stuck

Cutting carbs definitely works and lots of people have great success with this approach, but it isn't the only way to lose weight. I have tried many diets over the years, but now firmly believe that you have to find the approach that suits you and your lifestyle best.

I love carbs, particularly bread and pasta so don't fancy doing low carb (although I did do it successfully once for about three months). I don't like the idea of 5:2 and couldn't face WW or Slimming World. Last summer I decided to just do my own thing. I decided to focus on eating smaller amounts of the food I like, cutting down on snacks/takeaways, replacing fruit juice with water etc. Initially I just made a few small changes, but it has really worked for me and I've lost 4 st 4 in just under a year. The great thing is, it doesn't feel like a diet, I just eat like a normal person does! Some days I eat more than others, but I've completely got away from my old mindset where I would eat too much/the wrong stuff at lunchtime and therefore binge for the rest of the day because the diet would have to start tomorrow.

Good luck with whatever approach you take.

Anna Richardson has written a great book. It's a low ish carb diet but not completely strict like Atkins.
It's called Body Blitz. Plus it has loads of recipes.
