I've name changed for this...

Today I've had:
Breakfast: protein shake
Lunch: protein shake, slice of leerdamer cheese, 1/4 packet cashews
Dinner: packet of minstrels, 2 pieces of stir fry chicken (about 2 inches each in size), 3 forkfuls of pesto pasta (kids leftover dinner)
Drinks: green tea, 1x decaf coffee. 1/4 glass red wine (desperation!)

Protein shakes seem to be increasing on what I live on as at the moment my job is hectic and I find I'm not hungry if I have them. This is quite a typical day tho normally I have a salad or spinach omelette or similar.

Am I going to get scurvy?! The protein shakes are forever based meal replacement ones made with unsweetened almond milk...

Nooooo not the juicer.

OP what is it with you and denatured food?

Eat the fruit and veg. In lumps. With skin on. Like it comes naturally.

KatherinaMinola · 13/03/2014 22:34

No need for the juicer - just eat a banana or an apple or something! You can't possibly get your 5 a day from one meal - you need to have some sort of fruit and/or veg at lunchtime too (or breakfast).

Greatsnakes · 13/03/2014 22:35

I guess I don't like chewing! Seems like a waste of time.

Sorry, didn't know you had an eating disorder. But your choice of food is very biased towards the artificial.

Isn't Leerdamer dairy then? I thought it was cheese, like Edam.

Greatsnakes · 13/03/2014 22:36

Oh no now I just sound bonkers Confused

RubyGoat · 13/03/2014 22:37

Yes, that was my other thought - there's nothing fresh in there. All highly processed, lots of additives, probably sugar & salt in the shakes (?).

Try raw veg sticks & hummus / yoghurt dip, or fresh fruit. A few nuts & seeds. Cherry tomatoes, or berries.

Greatsnakes · 13/03/2014 22:38

I don't have an eating disorder any more... When say dairy I mean milk, cream or yoghurt- I'm partial to the odd slice of leerdamer if its in the fridge tho don't really eat a lot of it

Veg sticks sound good and hummus -will try that for lunch instead thanks

It does actually sound like you have an eating disorder - sorry. Do you think you could replace the shakes with a more regular breakfast and lunch? That would make such a difference.

Beastofburden · 13/03/2014 22:40

Seriously, if you juice it, you lose the fibre and much of the goodness.

Chewing does kind of come with the territory, with food Grin. I can see that making it all liquid and snacky and so on does make it less like food, which you may prefer. And well done for facing down that eating disorder. But I would really encourage you to challenge this preference for non-food, snacky little bits of cheese with random protein shakes. An omelette and an apple would be so much better.

Greatsnakes · 13/03/2014 22:41

Going to opt for juice tomorrow for breakfast- I use a food processor so keep the pulp. Veg sticks and hummus for lunch. Need to break this habit I think. Sorry been in denial for ages but written down it does not look good

Good luck OP.

RubyGoat · 13/03/2014 22:43

Snakes me too. It's really hard to get out of the patterns of thinking of food in a certain way isn't it. But, the shakes really can't be that helpful surely? Ideally you should be eating as natural a diet as possible (bearing in mind finances, time to prepare, dietary needs and restictions etc). The shakes aren't going to help towards that.

Mrswellyboot · 13/03/2014 22:43

No need for the shakes. Smoothie?

Veg soup, even a pre pack would be better but I would bulk cook something like carrot and coriander or tomato and basil.

I have made a low fat chickpea spread before, just garlic paste, tin of chickpeas drained, squeeze of lemon juice, natural yoghurt.

Beastofburden · 13/03/2014 22:43

Good for you. Enjoy the hummus and veg sticks. Spring is coming, you can get into lovely little baby vegetables and new season strawberries, just coming into the shops now. Baby broad beans, asparagus, raspberries... Mmmmmm....

Greatsnakes · 13/03/2014 22:44

Thank you to everyone who's replied- I'm going to take all your comments on board and sleep on them Smile

Whole juice is vastly better than a shake. Has to be, it's fresh & not packed full of additives. If you want some protein with it, get a handful of nuts or a boiled egg. (You can boil a few at a time & put them in the fridge when cool, will last a couple of days - very quick healthy snack.)

Greatsnakes · 13/03/2014 22:48

Mmm chickpea dip sounds good. I have tahini in the cupboard that I bought ages ago and never used. Had loads of stress the least few weeks- always makes me go off food too. Thanks for the tips

If you're worried about food triggering your appetite, then (apart from the obvious concerns about what sounds like a very dysfunctional relationship with food), you need to keep the amount of carbohydrate down, and the amount of fat and protein up. That will help enormously.

Greatsnakes · 14/03/2014 17:17

Today's been a lot better:
Breakfast: smoothie made with my blender- beeroot, spinach, ginger and grapes with 5 almonds

Lunch: veg soup (homemade)

Dinner... I have chicken so prob chicken with veg something

Snack: slice of cheese.

Feeling ok today- have stepped away from the protein shakes! Realised my skins not been looking great. Hadn't realised how processed my diet had been. Good tip on the fats/ protein. I'm not a massive fan of starchy carbs anyway. Bread makes me hungry and sugar is too much temptation.

OP posts:
Greatsnakes · 14/03/2014 17:19

*beetroot. Tho beeroot sounds like fun!
