Obalon balloon - has anyone got any experience of this?

I am thinking about getting an obalon balloon fitted and wondered if anyone had any experience? It's the new swallowable balloon, minimally invasive. It's £2000 for 1 balloon. Treatment lasts 12 weeks and you can lose around 50% of your excess weight, which is around 2 stone in my case. It seems it's for those who are not morbidly obese but are over BMI 27.

My concern would be the weight going back on rapidly after 12 weeks when it's taken out. Also, it's still very new, and a few people have had ulcers.

I know I can lose 2 stone by diet and exercise and not pay £2000 for a balloon but in 20 years I haven't managed to do it by conventional methods, maybe it's time to try something new.

Hi I'm thinking of this wonder diet pill, can you fly with the balloon inside you ? Or is it dangerous .

Dipper007 · 24/07/2014 16:13

You can fly in a pressurised normal plane. I found it was fine flying with an obalon balloon fitted

Does anybody have any updates on this subject please?

I'm looking into WLS and the Obalon balloon is something that looks reasonably safe and cheap but there are limited reviews online.

I do. I had the Olalon on 16th June and another in late July. I'm about to have them both removed. Weight loss is around 2 stone. I'm delighted, and have totally changed my lifestyle. I can go longer between meals and something is different in the pleasure centre of my brain: I haven't been craving fatty foods at all.

Maybe an element is the "placebo effect" because after spending £3K I'm not going to blow it, but it's been great.

Hi Blunds, I am considering the Obalon and since I am in Canada I have to go to Tijuana to get it done. Were you nervous about having it done?Do you mind telling me how much weight you had to lose? I am 5'6 and weigh 160 pounds (72.5 kilos) I want to lose 11.5 kilos and hope the Obalon will help me do that plus diet and exercise of course. I am a little concerned that I will fall back into old eating habits and gain the weight again but reading your comment it has given me hope that these bad eating habits can be changed and since I will be spending thousands of dollars I don't want to gain the weight back again either. I am curious about your comment that something is different in the pleasure centre of your brain - do you mean you do not get pleasure from eating anymore? Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

blunds · 24/09/2014 10:35

Hi Cancadiangal. Only just seen this. First of all, I'm male. I was 109K and 6 feet tall. Now I'm about 96Kg and (obviously) the same height. I can't comment on after the balloon yet - I am having them removed this afternoon.

The "pleasure centre" comment is a little hard to explain, but all I can say is that I changed from a greedy person to a normal person: I was eating because my tummy was rumbling and I felt weak, rather than because I fancied it. I've also got myself totally fit too. I think that's the detirmination not to waste the opportunity.

I do get pleasure from eating, pretty much the same as before, but I don't crave food. Previously, if I went a few days eating low fat food I would be absolutely dying to have a curry or anything full of fat. Now I don't.

Send a message if you want more info

It sounds like a lot of money for minimal to moderate weight loss that might not stay off. I can't help but wonder if permanent solutions like bands or bypass is better value in the long run.

Then again just eating better and exercising more is best value, easier said than done though.

Hi everyone I'm going for a consultation today I was wondering those who posted back in March how you got on by the end please? Also was two balloons uncomfortable and did anyone go for 3? Thank you xxx

ebalanzar · 25/03/2015 22:39

Hi, I just got offered to be part of the a trial here in the US. It's free for the whole Obalon process. It's to see if the FDA will approve it here in the US. It sounds tempting but kinda of scare to try it. For those who have done it before is it really secure? you guy's think is worth it? specially since is free, I guess I would be the Guinea pig for the trial here in the US

Hi Everyone

Please beware this has just been cancelled in France due to safety concerns.
They are not allowed to sell it anymore in France. Because of an incident. Im sure other countrys will follow. Not sure what this means. If someone died with it or not. I know there isnt any data.
Please think twice !!
